This song is about the Thirty Years' War that dominated central Europe in the 17th century (1618-1648). To this day it is one of the longest and bloodiest wars in history, with the death toll falling between 4 million and 8 million. Many of the fatalities were not even from active warfare, but famine and disease also plagued the area, upping the casualties that much more. Casualties reached such a high number that many Swedish men were forced to fight when they had barely reached manhood, and sometimes even before then. Which really makes the title of the song ("A Lifetime of War" in English) hit a little harder. Men basically spent their entire lives at war, no chance for a peaceful life. The was about the battle between Catholics and Protestants, and at some point during the war almost every major player/Country in Europe was a part of it. This Swedish version of the song tells the story from a Swedish soldier's point of view. You should also check out the English version; it is not a direct translation from the Swedish, but it rather tells the story of the war from the perspective of the outside people, those not involved directly in the war but were affected by it. The lyrics hits hard, but it also shows that even when times change, new technology comes, one thing remains constant and that is the horrors of the war, both those who fall in it and those who survive and have to live with nightmare every day (ptsd). Greetings from Denmark

The deep story about this song, is this soldier, grown up without family, don't have any story, get drafted into one of the longest wars. When he dies, he has not made any mark to be remembered. Just fading away into oblivion.

Danish here. i know this song and lyrics in swedish by heart. The song is so amazing and beautiful. Denmark and Sweden have been to war with eachother for about 36 times or so. Cheers for peace my Swedish brothers and sisters. Heja Sverige! :)

Sabaton "40:1" from Woodstock Poland 2012 is a must see live performance. The story is about a few polish soldiers delaying the huge German army during the German invasion of Poland. Having that sung in Poland for polish audience is spectacular. Also the crowed is enormous. If I am correct there was 550,000 there that year. There are also two other songs from that performance that is really good: "Ghost Division" and "Uprising". Ghost Division is about a German panzer group (?) that made a crazy advancement into Belgium and France far ahead of any of the German army. Uprising is about the polish uprising in Warzaw. That is also a great song when performed in Poland 😊

Isnt it an artiliary gun not a tank? I mean isnt this the tour from the great war album? They didnt have tanks like that in ww1 - only the very distinctive wierd early mainly british tanks - none had big barrels like that. So it would seem odd to have a ww2 tanks on stage for a ww1 album?

In 2012 they performed at Sweden Rock Festival . The concert happened to be on Swedens national Day. They started the're performance playing The national anthem . 30 000 People sang with them
@Motbilder Жыл бұрын
Not really true though. They only had a short time to play as they had been booked for other places before, so it was a special made ceremony mostly for the Anthem. Not a real concert. As plenty of us aren't very nationalistic, we did other things instead. I think I had a great time at the camping instead. 30 000 would have been more or less all visitors to the festival and that certainly wasn't the case. The estimate I've seen used for that year is ten thousand people. Perhaps you are thinking of some other year as they have played on national day before?

Nice reaction, I was at this show ( sitting somewhere in the middle of the platform to the left from this view of the stage) Just before this clip started Joakim asked everyone to hold up their cellphones since no one carries around a lighter anymore. Needless to say, this was one hell of a show that night. Sadly, this was just before covid broke out and started canceling shows (had for once tickets for 5 shows and 1 festival that year and this was the only one I got to attend) as for the lyrics, they are kind of a hit and miss on some of the translations. There is a difference between the English version and the Swedish version of this song which I usually explain is that the Swedish version tells the story from a Swedish soldier's view while then English is more of an outside observer's view.

This one always gets to me . The crowd knows it because there will be quite a few conscripts there and apparently it's a tradition to sing it in the military over there. For something in the same vein why not try the soldiers song by Diana Ankudinova but be warned you will need tissues.

It is just like a time machine. Back in the days of the Vietnam war, lots of the greatest bands wrote about war. Nowadays Sabaton are almost pretty alone on the subject, but more are coming, because we are heading right into wars once again - because of politics and religion. Nightwish are attacking the religious side of it, as well and are also focused on the environmental side of human stupidity / behavior. The money driven music scene are getting defeated by bands like Sabaton and Nightwish, because more and more people realizes what's going on - and because the bands are able to create such phenomenal music that grabs people minds and gives them a necessary wake-up call. Just like Deep Purple, Jimi and all the others from back in the days when we were young. Great reaction from you - of course - we all know you listen, watch and understand = great reaction 👍

You should definitely check out the English version. Same instrumental but the lyrics are from a different perspective. This version being a soldier going to war while the other being from the perspective of somebody seeing the war from the outside. Personally this version hits harder but both a great.
@Ruppe62 Жыл бұрын
War is old men fighting and sacrificing young men for it.
The Thirty Years War lasted, well, thirty years and something like 20% of all Europeans died overall. Sweden was the main force behind the protestant side and the war grinded several generations of men into mince meat. Now, this performance was in Sweden and sung in Swedish, so there's this somber 'it could have been me' undertone in it.
