EFFING YASSSSS FRAN - I've been playing with riso too! I'm really excited to have time to incorporate it more into my practice . The adjective you used ~~delightful~~ is the perfect way to describe the way riso gives me all the warm and fuzzies! 🌞

I LOVE Risograph as well. For me I find it quite easy to understand as I have an (semi) indepth knowledge of printing basics. You can also think of it that same as CMYK offset printing (only you can choose which colours you want to print). With offset printing they create things called PLATES (which are the layers that Fran is showing in BnW) and each plate represents a different colour, so there will be four plates. And if you want to create a blend of two colours (example - red (magenta) and blue (cyan) = purple) then you would have those PLATES overlap. If you guys are working digitally, this is really easy to do in something like Illustrator or Photoshop. In illustrator, separate each colour via a new layer. If you were doing CMYK for example, Cyan colour would be on one layer, Magenta another, yellow another and black another. Merge all shapes on each layer and set to multiply, then You can see how the objects and colours will look when printed on top of one another. If you don't want overlap then you can cut out sections from each layer.... I hope that help you guys to understand and if you get the chance to do Riso GIVE IT A GO! :D :D

You are generous Fran sharing what you learned I never knew about zine! Thank you. I remember doing this on calc when I was still in collage, but then was for fabric prints in huge sizes.... This is a handy printer to try new things....

I didn't even know about riso printing. It is really interesting how you have to work on layers for each different color. Your zine turned out amaaaaazing!! When you started to choose your colors for it I could already tell: BLUE PINK AND LIGHT PURPLE. That's one of your signatures after all.

I've found it a lot easier to get those lighter tones on the Riso sending it a digital file over scanning my image in! But you can also mess with the contrast and how it scans/interprets the artwork for the master with some of the menu buttons. Your work translates really beautifully to the Riso and I hope you find a studio in NY and make some more work!

Woah I didn't know RISO still exists! I had a hand-printing riso machine kit (like a mini silkscreen printing holder(?) with screen that you can expose with the machine) from Japan when I was young. My mini riso machine broke way before the inks ran out, and they never dried out so I used it for regular screenprinting many years later. The last I heard the company is now closed down/no longer in Japan? Cool to watch your video and see that it's digital now. I miss doing this! :)
