My current theory on what the abyss could be trying to achieve with so much value is, an Aubade. The same way Faputa was made with the sole intent of destroying Iruburu, an Aubade is the only other thing we know that can not only ignore the curse, but also rewrite the rules of the abyss

I feel like one of the funny parts about MiA is that the chapters are so rare, but sometimes, like this chapter, nothing of substance is really happening, it's more just setup, so we can wait 6+ months for a single chapter then the discussion is, unfortunately, just not gonna be there until we're at least another chapter or two into it because this is more the intro than anything else. This is the only media I partake in where it can take literally a YEAR to see lore payoff. It's not good or bad, just interesting, and shows how amazing MiA is because in this day and age of short attention spans, only the top works have people drooling like this over a span of months and years. Regardless man I appreciated your take on this- and always appreciate how you elucidate the structure of value that permeates the series- and am really looking forward to when we have some meaty stuff to discuss. Maybe in a few months, as presumably the chapters will flow more quickly now due to the author's agreement on volume production.

It's a good and a bad thing at the same time, just like everything in our world. When I first read the manga (about 10 days before chapter 63), I was thinking about made in abyss literally non-stop. I mean literally non-stop. I don't really remember what is was thinking about, but I can remember how i was thinking about me thinking about MIA non-stop. I was in this state like 1-2 months, almost the whole summer. And then... That one largest hiatus. You can feel how painful it was for me in particular, starting to wait for it just after reading it for the first time. The good thing is that there is so much time to think about this world. Like, you are living in this world, you don't know what will happen next. Making and reading theories is like having an alternative universes. It's like having exponentially more content about your favorite thing. So many mysteries and such a long time between the chapters giving a birth to a hundreds of theories and makes you want to do your own. I love your word "interesting" insted of good/bad. I do agree with you.

Listening to your voice is always a delight, i love these chapter insights! Regarding the abyssal hair twirls, I always assumed the were an after effect of being hit by the 5th layer curse, as we are shown that prushka gets them right after she gets hit by it hard enough. All white whistles tend to have it as they have to go to the 5th layer to get their white whistle. My interpretation is that because of the proximity of layer 5 to layer 6, it’s curse gives you a very minor body change, but isn’t enough to make you different than a human still.
@pootispaghetti9 ай бұрын
tyty! and that would make sense because a lot of layer 5 is flat and very close to layer 6. like we saw in layer 4, curses seem to blend together a bit near the edges of layers. I don't think it'd be a guaranteed thing tho since Riko and Nanachi never got it, and Prushka didn't get it until the 2nd time. Maybe it's just random? or maybe something more?

I think there is a fourth possibility with respect to what becomes of Nanachi, which is that we might wind up following what they do when separated from the group and left alone (or with this strange beast) in this alien environment. I'd also like to note that the way Tsukushi presents the tendril reaching into the panel as if out of some unseen further dimension of space; very cinematic use of effects to emulate camera focus as a way of evoking this unnatural space-bending quality. (Feels somewhat parallel to Fujimoto's presentation of the Curse Devil as breaking the panel structure in Part One of Chainsaw Man, actually: A monstrous force intruding from Outside.) Srajo's discussion of "soul" reminds me a little of the Gnostic distinction between hyle (the flesh and the material world), psyche (the individual human soul) and pneuma (the transcendent spirit which connects human beings to God), particularly pneuma-literally "breath," incidentally-and also confirmed certain thematic observations I'd made about how the concept of "accumulation" as framed in the sense of the coming together of one's past and all that has touched one's life and all that one has touched into the substance of the self. Particularly it dovetails with the way in which the residents of Iruburu became trapped in place through a paring of their selves and forms down to only what they believed to be their deepest desires, divorcing themselves from the acceptance of their place within the greater world and the continuity of the Abyss, with Faputa serving to liberate them through carrying forward their dreams and their soul-substance through her own accumulation and crystallisation, realising the potential lost in that severance.
@pootispaghetti9 ай бұрын
it's possible, although as much as Tsukushi liked Nanachi, I doubt he'd allow someone to go unscathed this deep in the Abyss. maybe a combination of 1 and 4 is possible, but we'll see. Those gnostic connections are interesting, I'll have to look into it!

My immediate thoughts are that the curse/forcefield is a collection of souls of past residents and that every layer is from a different era between the 2000 years breath, every 'breath' kills the residents and turns their technology and civilization into a new layer of the abyss. Birthday-death disease is caused by the 'breath' and this 'breath' exists to collect souls for fuel or sustain the forcefield/curse, the reason the curse/forcefield shifts and recognizes people with consciousness is because it is made of consciousness/souls. Faputa is like the curse itself because she is like a collection of souls/desires from the residents of Irburu and Irumyuui, that is why she is not recognized as a living being by the curse and can freely ignore it and that is why she can also see souls. I think Reg is likely the same as Faputa, a collection of souls of consciousness because of the weird alternate personalities we see in Ido Front when he says that 'someone taught me how to use this body.' that to is why he is ignored by the abyss. Riko is ignored by the abyss because her life/soul comes from the abyss itself rather than an external consciousness, since Faputa says she doesn't know where her soul comes from then we could conclude that the abyss shares the same confusion and that is why she doesn't experience birthday-death disease, as for why she experiences the curse, idk. It may be because her soul was part of the souls in the forcefield and the reason they all venture to the bottom of the abyss is to reach the 'source' (referenced by sparagamos's name and the incinerator) though idk why this would be the case.
@UniversalS7579 ай бұрын
oh btw, since you mentioned the beast stone being like a pseudo 'your worth' i think something that adds credibility to this idea is that 'your worth' is produced from like the heart of a human sacrifice which is similar to how the beast stone is located near the heart of the juusou

Agreed, after making the video and thinking on the chapter more I doubt that tsukushi would cut their journey short like that. Iruburu gave them their Gutsu of reuniting with Mitty, but now that they realize that's impossible they need to find their true wish and embrace their adventure.

First time discussing Made in Abyss with Manga readers and not anime only. So I can get into some possible end game theories or ideas. First of all does anyone else agree or disagree or have any input that the whole "heading into the next 2000 years." Saying that several characters have said could mean that in the depth of the Abyss time is so constricted that basically everyone could live 2,000 years or more so time may even almost halt or free? Like imagine if Riko and gang enter the 7th or 8th layer and basically everyone is there from this cycle? Meaning the Nat or whatever the boys were from the first season. They might be down their? Technically they may arrive later? They would possibly be adults. Far older than Riko because they only made it to the bottom like 20 years from now or something. So everyone who makes it to the bottom basically exists there? This may even lead to weird space time issues were what if since time compresses like this. If you were to "leave" like Reg for example. You may be travelling into the past as you go back up to the 6th layer etc. Could RIko have made it to the bottom with Reg. Spent time down there. Reg left... lost his memory and ended up meeting a younger Riko? I know that's messed up. And I'm not saying it's true. This type of time paradox is always difficult to get right? But I suppose it leads into multiple things. Like how Reg was already named Reg. If you know the theory about that piece of unbreakable paper used as a letter being part of Rikos face? With the scar on it. If that is true than it means there is a future or alternative universe Riko who somehow already made it to the bottom. I know I just mixed several possible thoughts or theories of mine? But any comments?
@pootispaghetti9 ай бұрын
I doubt the Reg time travel theory, I've heard similar stuff but it doesn't make sense with Lyza having adventured with Reg to some degree and likely being the one to send him up. Imo the Reg name mystery will have a stranger answer to it. For the time dilation thing, there would be a point at which someone could live for 2000 years in surface time, probably near where Hello Abyss is atm honestly. I don't think we'll see the people from the surface this far down, or at least not all of them. I'd feel a bit strange if someone could skip the hardships that HA has gone through very easily, but it's not impossible.
@MrArrmageddon9 ай бұрын
@@pootispaghetti Thanks it's interesting to hear your thoughts. Don't worry about reading or replying to all of this. I mostly agree with you. What your saying is the most likely outcome. Yes every time I think about the time travel theory I too wonder how Lyza fits in? But this is the Abyss. Who's to say that was Lyza? Yes Lyza is down there and or will play a big role in the final plot. But maybe Reg saw a grown up Riko? Or even more likely since it seems like Reg has or had multiple souls in him or channelling though him. Who's to say it's not someone elses memories he is remembering when he hears voices or sees images of the past? If it's even the past in the first place. lol Like the female type Reg Unit? Maybe another unit like Reg meet Lyza. Soul cross over nonsense happening. Or someone else. We know something is up though. It's not wrong to dive into these thoughts. lol Next about the seeing other people down there. No it won't be many or all of them. But if they start to get word of a mass instinction event it may light a fire under some of them. Causing a lot of Whistles to make a push for the bottom. Leaving a few of our more important characters from season one making it all the way down. Seeing old faces again for the final arc. If any make it to the bottom I would expect it to be over decades of effort. And only some of them and I would expect it to be somewhat covered in a side story and woven into the plot. Making it not seem like it was easy. And not without some loss or something. However I kind of agree with you that others making it down past where Riko is now is not likely. Sure I can see them reaching the Maelstrom. But advancing further is less likely. In all honesty I don't think getting down to the sixth layer is super difficult. Enough people have done it. But getting though maelstrom... yeah I'm not so sure? Now plot wise this can still feel justified as long as the seventh layer is a long arc. And sure other people can or have made it there. Taking a lot longer than Riko etc. But only Riko and gang can achieve the final solution. For all we know making it to the seventh layer. Might be the easy part.
