It was one of President-elect Donald Trump's main campaign promises: to bring back manufacturing jobs that American firms have outsourced abroad. Yet several major US companies, such as Reebok, have already started investing in production sites at home. Many had been producing in Asia - where workers' wages are lower - but have found new ways to cut costs, mainly thanks to new technology. This report takes a closer look.
A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett and Elom Marcel Toble.

Yes pay American labor $10 per hour, no accrued holidays, no sick leaves, no maternity leave! We know all of this already happening in American corporate such as Google, Facebook and Amazon and many more. Slavery work for the rich corporate which offices are established in tax free heaven countries. The great America is back LOL

Stop China and Chinese to enter USA and steal its technology because they will use the technology to detroy the world.

Wow, this Freeman guy either lied about knowing economics, is a total China fan, or both. He could not have been more wrong on Trump pushing back on China. He spent most of the interview acting like a paid Chinese endorser by warning Trump of China's economic strength and capability to bring America to its knees if Trump dared to take economic action against it. Luckily, the President didn't take this guy's advice and the results are in, Ronald Freeman is the one who should be taking economic advice from the President. President Trumps economic results have completely shut this guy down. I wouldn't take Ronald Freeman's advice or assessments on economics ever, and I hope the Atlantic Council board he sits on canned him for analytical incompetence by letting personal grievances drive his analytical assessments. Freeman is literally the worst type of analyst to have. Once it is discovered an analyst consciously incorporates their personal biases into their analytical judgement, then their assessments are useless in any serious context, which is what the Atlantic Council would like to be taken as I am sure.

Frequency Harmonic - exactly. The guy obviously is afflicted with TDS. Trump knew that China has a lot more to lose in a trade war than America..China is hugely dependent on the US buying their Chinese junk from them. I’ve seen certain things (like steel products) go up a bit in the process, but our economy is so strong that it’s a drop in the bucket compared to all the new work being created. We can do this for a long time..let’s see how China fares.

You liberals just don't get it!! Years ago I automated a company, We didn't lose any employees. We just shifted people from production to Quality Control. If a company doesn't have a robust Quality Control. Any company that doesn't have a Quality Control department is living in the dark ages. We hired more people, doubled our work space, shifted people to QA, Improved our product control all within 6 months!!!. With automation, one person did the work of 6. Oh yes,,,,Our President won again!!

Robert Strack I like everything you said it makes total sense. Sadly this hasn’t been my experience I work for a company that about two years ago fired all their QC people about 80 people. I was going to be one of those people I was one of the lucky ones that had machining experience. Now all of us have to run our machines and do QC on all our parts and it’s so stressful because we are doing so much its almost impossible to keep up with the machines and everything they need and preform the quality control all at the same time. The turn over rate is insane!! Nobody makes it. Me and two other guys are the only ones that have made it five years. Everyone else lasts about a month and then they quit or get fired for bad parts.

Let Mr. Freeman tell that to all the people across America who have lost their jobs due to the protectionist policies of the Chinese government, not to mention a system that largely depends on subsidies to prop up most industries to the detriment of American industry. The protectionist policies that the U.S. employs pale in comparison to China. Who is he trying to kid ? The average American knows this. And the interviewer lets him put them at the same level. So if a company returns to the U.S. and develops production techniques that allow two workers to replace four, that's two more jobs that employ Americans. And the technology that is developing here will possibly stay here because anything that you take to China in that area, they will steal. What Mr. Freeman is suggesting is for Americans to stand idlly by just watching the decline of our cities and industries and our southern border being overrun and do nothing for the people who this hurts. You want to give people at the bottom help ? A job is the help they want. Not income redistribution. There will always be people at the top in a capitalist system. If you make it intolerable for them they will pick up and move to another country. Then you lose the tax dollars they provide and the jobs they produce.

+some body Maybe not November 8th, but soon after Trump got elected. Trump has been campaigning for "Made in USA" for over a year before he got elected. He made it a major issue in people's minds. That made some patriotic overseas manufacturers think about what they were doing. That's the "Trump Effect". Trump threatened a trade war and tariffs against our trading partners. You don't want to be an overseas manufacturer when the tariffs take effect. So American companies started coming back anticipating the tariffs and trade war. THAT is the "Trump Effect". Obama had already given up, telling us those jobs were never coming back. Actually, I don't think Obama gave up. He never really tried to bring the jobs back. More taxes and regulations wasn't going to bring manufacturers to the US. I think he was secretly happy about it. I think that was his plan all along. He wanted to spread our wealth to the rest of the world.

Obama did not “resuscitate” the economy. If you look at quarterly GDP, median income, wages, and job growth for his 8 years in office what you see is an economy that was erratic, inconsistent and hollow. US worker wages have been stagnate vs inflation since early 70's because % of US workforce in manufacturing dropped from over 20% in early 70's to a low of 8% in 2016. China has seen rising wages(slowly) as their % of workforce in manufacturing climbed to almost 15%.

Ronald Freeman is wrong ....very wrong....mostly due to the fact that he clearly does not understand manufacturing. Fully automated factories still create many jobs. All of those machines need to be designed, built, maintained modified, improved ect... Manufacturing facilities support local machine shops, automation suppliers, raw material suppliers, transportation companies, utilities, local/fed taxes, local restaurants ect....... The trickle down economics of a manufacturing site is huge ...even if it is automated. Machines require a lot of maintenance. After he calls manufacturing facilities "irrelevant" he then talks about lack of 'middle income' jobs... Where the heck does he think middle income jobs come from? It will be the people supporting these "irrelevant" factories.

2019: The middle class and lower income earners have grown faster than CEO and white collar pay. More companies have returned to the U.S. and increase of employment rates have out paced Obama's. Icing on the cake, they are full time, not pat time jobs.

Its high time all Corporates should be little liberal in minting money by making their manufacturing units automated only where its required utmost. That way Corporates will employ more people and more people will be employed. Just rethink Corporates.

@7.31, if the economy is already in very good shape and employment is at an all time high, then bringing back the technology-assisted manufacturing and expanding export can only help grow the economy. The US needs to do this until its fortunes are restored. World trade however is not suppose to enrich one nation over the other - hence the discontent over trade surplus with China around the world. Also, US is the world's greatest debtor. Any appearance of a healthy economy is nothing but a MIRAGE until the debts are dissolved and budget is balanced. China's riches did not appear from a vacuum. They were sucked out of the US.
