Ancient Indian was always accepting of all sexualities and the entire gender spectrum. Trans women have always been queen guards in kingdoms. Lord Shiva has a majestic avatar called the Ardhanarishwar who is neither male nor female but both at the same time. There are vedic mentions and even vast depictions of divergent sexuality in temples like Khajuraho. India has generously incorporated everyone since time immemorial. It was the colonialism which corrupted many minds. It is commendable for the judiciary to pass judgements which are cleansing our imperialist conditioning.

Just a correction: It was not illegal to be gay. Section 377 introduced by Brits made same sex 'sexual activities' illegal.Our leaders decided to keep the law as is post Independence. Funny enough,Britishers themselves abolished it in 1967 but took us 50 more years to do same.

377 was for unnatural sex, so it included beastiality, unconsentual sex, incestuous sex etc. In 2018 they removed same sex from the list

I really like how subtly they show that a "mother's advice" is not always right or correct for you. Tara saw her mom trash talk their way of life since she was young and how psychologically abusive/manipulative she was towards her sister because she didn't marry a rich guy from a wealthy family but instead chose someone who lives in the same locality. Her mother always approves and encourages Tara's means and methods but her breaking down by seeing her brother-in-law love and care towards his family truly shows the error in her ways and her mom's judgement.

The foreign religions which came to India don't share tolerance for homosexuality compared to the native religions of India . Due to the majority of people following Native religion of India it was possible to decriminalise homosexuality . It would not have been possible if the foreign religions were in majority . @@felixxfeliciss Hinduism has always been acceptable of homosexuality as well, though there are a few sections in ancient texts that contradict it & consider it unnatural Kamasutra has an entire chapter about homosexuality & many references in other chapters Ancient temple carvings have homosexual people indulging in sexual activities, indicating that at that time people were not only aware of it but also accepted it Sadly 200 years of British Raj changed a lot of things, including perception about homosexuality Though I don't think any major mythological characters have been homosexual that I know of

Of course everyone have different opinion and when it comes to these political parties, the ministers seems weird in their statements. In 2009 during congress times, when the Delhi high court was hearing the Naz Foundation case, two ministries filed completely contradictory views. While the ministry of home affairs was opposed to striking down the law because homosexuality cannot be “morally condoned”, the ministry of health and family welfare argued that Section 377 is counter-productive to the efforts of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. I am glad atleast it happened and no one went the decision in 2018.
