As a gay Indian guy, I was super annoyed with the representation of gay men in Indian cinema. When someone told me there was a good gay love scene in a particular Indian web series, I bought an amazon subscription just for that. So Basically the scene that made you uncomfortable jaby, that's the very thing for which thousands of gay and proud men like myself watched this show. The normalization of sex between people of same gender needs to be done and this show has done that. I usually love your reviews jaby and achara but i feel this show has too many cultural nuances that is impossible for any foreigner to understand and the one episode which you found preachy is I think one of the most awesome episodes, it's a very difficult topic to handle on a web show. Overall, I LOVED this show more so because they have shown leads as Humans and flawed like we are. Thanks for the review !! I have immense respect and appreciation for all the sincere hard-work Jaby and Achara put in for each of their videos, it’s commendable!

This is very true for the scene in this episode in particular. There are a lot of gay love scenes in this series but until this one, they seem very mechanical and I'm sure that is intentional. The scene in this episode underlined the 'love' in the love scene and that is very important. Even in the context of the series and ignoring its importance in normalising non-herero love on Indian media, the scene helped show how Karan's character had grown over the course of the series. As he says himself, Nawab was the only person he had ever truly loved so seeing him giving in to the emotion completely allowed us to see that he was ready for a new chapter in his life. Going from the kiss to the bathtub would certainly not have had the effect because then all the viewers would see would have been another of Karan's hookups

If its okay to root for characters that are criminals in a show then why not this? Also, about Zoya Akhtar "shitting where she eats".... Of course! Okay Jaby, I get your concern, I had to pause the argument about Tara being a destructive character to comment. So, when Tara started out, she saw this world that was shiny and inaccessible, she was in a bad place monetarily more than anything else. So she wanted it, she groomed herself for it. She had more reasons to plot this out than Jim Sarbh's character had to cheat with his fiance. She just tried to seduce him by hanging back at his room or doing some makeup. She didnt force him or threaten him at any point. All of this would not have happened if Jim was a loyal to his fiance. So that you have to give her. She mustve thought that this one act could secure her future and then she has been a loving and devoted wife. And by the end, even that lie she gave up because she understood how hollow that is. She could have played along or actually cheated herself if money and fame was all she wanted. Even bad wives get alimony after a divorce, this jewellery was hers. I am sure she must have spent on heir wedding too, plus given it time and effort. And Jim was the reason it fell apart. So no, she did not run away with the spoils of the war. She took a small part of it that was hers.

Come on! You don't have to defend her. What Tara did was horrible, very similar to blackmailing. The guy could have been accused of sharing the video. He felt guilty and had to marry her even though he wasn't 100% sure about it. And you saying how good she is because she just left with some gold and didn't demand any alimony. Well, that's because she can't. Educated ex-wives in India are not entitled to alimony by law. Also, unlike US, Neither there is any law which would force the man to give a part of their wealth to the ex-wife. The existence of these laws in India is an urban myth.
@ankita73424 жыл бұрын
@@militantatheist It wasn't similar to blackmailing at all. It was damage control what Adil's family wanted to offer Tara. It totally depended on the pity they felt for her. But it wasn't some Gram Panchayat's verdict that he'd have to marry her and it was clearly shown that he wasn't bound to. The situation had cooled off organically, but Tara did manipulate him into marrying her which is wrong, but not criminal. Also, not shown exactly when Tara fell for Adil but she did. She was wrong, a typical gold digger but according to me, she's redeemable. But I don't know how things will go for Adil in the future considering he cannot keep it in his pants and has a penchant for cheating and lying effortlessly.

I don't understand why the protagonists should bear the complete responsibility of not breaking the marriages. Didn't Adil know that Tara was flirting with him in the flashback? Did Tara lure him? yes. But in the end it was Adil's choice to do what they did. He would have cheated anyway it is his nature. Faiza wsn't luring him but he did end up cheating on Tara. And he always made a joke out of Tara's background. And the fight on the table was important. When they got into the accident it was a public event. Everyone was aware what was going on...and if Tara would have shied away from the situation without addressing it publicly it would have meant she is doing it fr the money and status, further concreting the theory that she is a gold digger. And she has grown out of her secretary phase....she now knows what a dubious and diabolical thing high table is. Back then she was unaware. She thought this status would fix everything and it will all be unicorns and roses. And yes Adil was joking but the context is important. they are already going through a rocky phase....trouble with pregnancy, cheating and lying etc. your marriage has jus lost face amongst your peers....here when you take a jab like that...IT IS DISRESPECTFUL and Tara knows that he is still cheating on her which further adds to her annoyance. Tara comes first for Adil later only due to business and reputation. In India having a perfect marriage gives a person professionally and personally a lot of brownie points. That is the only reason he is trying to save the marriage.

I agree zoya Akhtar comes from privilege but that doesn't mean she can't comment on the very same thing. At least she's talking about the duplicity of upper crust. She also made Gully Boy. Does she have to be a rapper to understand the struggle. But what irritates the most about your perception is how little you understand women's struggle. In India where patriarchy is still prevalent women have to struggle for everything. Being born rich does not make it easier. And headstrong women are considered to automatically be a bitch. You don't have to agree with the actions of the character but you understand why she does what she does. You be the kind of person who would laud characters like kabeer Singh and Leonardo in the wolf of wall street but won't like if a woman does morally ambiguous things. Sorry I'm using your comment to put my point across but I want more people to read this. Is Tara a bad and manipulative person for leaking their video to get married and rich? Ofcourse. But the fact that Jaby feels empathy for Adil is ridiculous. Look at the context - Tara has seen poverty and is ready to compromise on her values to get a chance to be rich, Faiza has been in a physically violent marriage with her dad asking her to go back to the same man so she's obviously going through a tough emotional time and in this vulnerable state cheats with an old friend and then keeps cheating. I'm not saying what she did was ok. But both of them come from a desperation/need or vulnerable emotional place. Adil has a perfect fiance and still chooses to cheat on her with Tara. Then his marriage is again going fine and he decides to cheat on Tara with Faiza. He's lying till the last scene to Tara about not seeing Faiza. And you think he's trying to fix things with Tara wtf? He only says "Tara's been through a lot and can't leave her" when Faiza asks if he'll ever leave her and commit to Faiza. This is classic of men/women who cheat, they use excuses and don't commit to the people they're cheating with, continue cheating but also maintain a marriage and all its social advantages. But he's not actually stopping cheating and seeing Faiza. How can jaby bring sympathy for him and just blame it all on Tara! Plus, how is Tara blamed for breaking up a marriage? Yes she slept with a man who was taken, but she was not in a relationship. The guy who's fkn getting married should save his marriage, you're the one taking the vows, the blame on breaking something that was supposed to be important to you - IS ON YOU. Not on the person you cheated with, they were not in the goddamn relationship, they aren't breaking off vows. Adil is not a child, he chooses to cheat multiple times and is just as flawed, if not more than Tara and Faiza. And Tara takes HER jewellery that was gifted to her or she bought after she started earning, she insists on working even when her mother in law tries to discourage it, that jewellery is now hers. Do you ask back for gifts from exes?! And I don't get why Jaby is being all - apparently cheating is not a big deal in this show. This show depicts reality, they're not saying cheating is okay. Theyre showing grey characters. Hasn't jaby himself narrated a life story of a girl he was dating when he was cheating on her with an older woman? (I'm literally stating facts he's mentioned in his own videos rather than revealing his personal life dirt). How Many Girlfriends Has Jaby Had? video says "started dating both DZ and MT without telling them, then told MT after a while and she told me to reveal this to DZ, worst advice". So he himself cheats, doesn't even have the morals to tell the truth to the women unless advised/pushed by others, and is acting all high and mighty here?! Whether it's a marriage or a relationship, a commitment is a commitment. If you cheat in a relationship, what says you won't in a marriage? And Adil cheated, but Tara can't call him out in public? Specially when his accident revealed to everyone that he was cheating and embarrassed Tara so much yet she covered up for me in front of everyone? Even if she hadn't, I don't see what's wrong in calling out the wrongdoer. If Adil calls her out at a later point in front of everyone at the table for leaking the video, I don't see you having a problem with that. Why the hypocrisy? The fact that jaby says "I'm already uncomfortable with hetero stuff going on too long, and then they show two dudes having sex for 5 mins" implying he's more uncomfortable with homosexual men just shows how people who say they believe in equality and freedom can be homophobes inside too. You can see a lot of this stuff in his other videos too, where he'll propagate the whole toxic masculinity philosophy of men don't cry, I'm manly, he's even made fun of a guest on a video when she said she and her husband don't follow gender roles/responsibilities. Also, it's ironic that you're so uncomfortable with intimate scenes but you sexualise Indian actresses in situations that don't even depict anything like that, seriously it makes me uncomfortable how much you do it. Honestly, I wouldn't be able to bear this review if it was not for Achara. She's the reason I watch. Jaby got so defensive when in another episode, a woman got married to an impotent man and couldn't break off the marriage due to a society, he called her powerful when she truly was helpless in that scenario. Neither did he understand why dowry is bad. Achara explained both those instances pretty well, but he was not ready to listen to alternate opinions. You kept saying for 2 reactions if being gay was illegal, maybe you should've researched that and other cultural contexts. What's the point of a reaction otherwise, specially when you're too defensive to understand the issues of a country/culture that the show is talking about, even when achara and the comments explain it to you. Are all men the same? No right? How can all rich people be the same? And even if they are, what's wrong in Zoya Akhtar exposing everything that's bad about the rich high class society she's a part of? Isnt that a good thing? What you guys also did not understand was - yes it seems a bit ridiculous that the wedding planners are helping the bride escape and being the heroes. But also, should they just stand around and organise an event where the girl is being drugged and married off, an illegal act is being committed FFS. they can't contact police because they're bribed and will side with the politicians. Would you do a job where something illegal is being done and be an ALLY WITH THE CRIMINALS? And if you're wondering why I watch him if I have so many issues, I've watched a maximum of 25-30 random videos out of the thousands he has. All of the issues I've written here are always present in any random video of his I've watched, they're just in a smaller dose so the audience doesn't remember and call him out. And I love watching Achara. Edit : Even in Little things s1 e4 and e5 review, he kept blaming Mithila, whereas any indian who saw the show loved both Dhruv and Mithila. I don't think Tara is necessarily well written. Most of the times I see her, I just feel like she's hiding herself, hiding who she really is behind the curtain of the class. I find it so hard to believe that a girl as smart as her could really believe that her plan of ruining another marriage, and seducing a rich guy could actually give her a happy life. And her sister too grew up in the same conditions as her who turned out to fairly understand how the world works and where she could find her happiness. So your argument that Tara turned out like that due to her poverty doesn't stand cuz her sister who grew up in the same conditions didn't take such horrible steps for a better life. And hence, I would like to believe that she's a horrible character just liker her husband and well, they both deserve each other. And it's kind of ridiculous that you support Tara and Faiza's mistakes because they were going though "something". I mean who isn't going through something? But who are you as person will be defined by the choices you make in such hard situations. It's these moments in a person's life that define who they truly are.

They could have done it without furthering the stereotype of gay men always looking fr sex All of Karan's interactions with any other gay character on the show have always been sexual, except the Landlord They even showed Nawab cheating on his husband.......can't justify that in name of closure...cheating is cheating One of Karan's ex whom one of his friend was marrying, even he tried to kiss him in the washroom while being in a relationship I kinda know that in higher, more liberal strata of society, cheating isn't considered that big of a deal....but it's still icky & on one hand one of the significant plotlines of the show is based on cheating & the makers want us to feel bad fr Tara bcoz of Adil cheating on her, while on other hand almost every other character is cheating without any consequences
@subhashreemohanta14984 жыл бұрын
@@anantsharma6365 That is kind of normalizing it, isn’t it? Everyone cheats, straight people, gay people. Whether engaged or married, Adil (straight guy) cheated and so did Govind and Nawab. Why is a gay person doing it is an act gone too far? The gay sexuality shown was in accordance to the character of Karan. He is a single guy who hasn’t moved on from his one true love. He doesn’t want to get involved in a relationship and just has one-night stands with other guys. Similar representations have been done for numerous straight characters in other shows.

I think that's his opinion. However, even I agree that Jaby sounded kind of immature to understand this reality. I don't even think that the difference in countries has anything to do with it. It's simple human nature. When you don't have enough you will do anything to become privileged. The coolest thing about the show is that it depicted human beings as how they are. A mixture of good and bad. None of us are complete saints. Jaby should have understood it.

I think the reason Tara picked the fight at the dinner table was because there were guests at home and she knew it would be easier for her to leave without facing violence if her husband and in laws have an audience at the time of her leaving.

Jim wants to be loyal because HE HAS A SAVIOUR COMPLEX. You can read up on it. He did not love Tara but she was a charity case for him (he has repeatedly said that to Faiza). Tara blew up because he promised that he won't go back to Faiza but clearly he was still going to her. Also, everyone on the dinner table was talking about aadil's affair in hushed voices and knew about it. Privileged makers are talking about the privileged and calling them out, a technique similar to punching up where you can ridicule those above you in the society rather than punching down, where you make fun of those weaker and lesser privileged to you. The only way to acknowledge your privilege is to call out the issues within you and those who hold the same power as you. Again, each character is a shade of grey. Achara 👏👏👏👏👏

it is interesting to notice how jaby had no problem with the bridezilla episode. he was laughing and having fun in that episode(so was i!). he didn't take issue with stereotyping women as being bridezillas. in this episode he takes issue with a lady saying 'men are stupid'. men arent stupid but tara's mother in law didn't mean that. she was consoling tara and coercing her to stay in the marriage.
@anantsharma63653 жыл бұрын
In that episode it ws just one girl who ws the bridezilla That one girl doesn't represent women & her being a bridezilla can't be equated to "women being bridezillas" But a generalising statement like "men are stupid" is the same as saying women are dumb, or women can't drive, or women are crazy etc. It IS a sexist statement & no amount of mental gymnastics cn chnge that fact

Hey Jaby, adding another perspective, relationship history affects certain reaction which arent "normal" Ex 1: women can say men are stupid but men cant say the same, men are at the privileged position, women have been oppressed from ages so when you call women stupid you sound like a bully, same as we can't call oppressed communities stupid, that makes us unempathetic and bully. Ex 2: Jim Sarbh was pulling his wife's legs, that's what couple and friends do, not really when you are already going through tension in your relationship its not the same comparison, Jim Sarbh tried to control his wife time to time by pulling her down and he knew it was her weak spot so no it's not the same.

why are they toxic? Jaby's opinions does make sense. See people are allowed to feel uncomfortable while watching explicit content right? He doesn't feel comfortable that is okay. The explicit content is unnecessary and extra in most of the content be it hollywood or bollywood. Things are pretty straight. Adil loved Faiza, Faiza loved Adil, Faiza's father forced her to marry someone else, she wasn't happy, Adil was sad to see Faiza not being with her, Tara knew Adil and Faiza had feelings for each other before marrying Adil, Tara wooed Adil in the office even though she Knew Adil was with a girl, Adil's firt girl Natasha separated from her after she came to know Adil made out with Tara, Tara became hard to resist she tried really hard to woo Adil, tara was smooth and had practiced her game, it was tara who used to go to adil's office to $ eduuce him not the other way around, Adil was guilt trapped by Tara as the tape got viral, Adil thought Tara's life is ruined because of the tape, Adil made up to her by marrying her, he didn't have any idea that Tara used Faiza and Faiza's connection to get closer to Adil, he didn't have any idea that Tara had planned it all. Adil was being nice to Tara all the time but he never loved her as he always loved Faiza which Tara was aware of but Tara made Faiza her best friend so adil and faiza's lvoe story ends. Adil loved Faiza but still didn't want to separate from Tara because he thought she is in a miserable poor condition, Adil never hesitates in helping and being generous to anyone including Tara, the tape was lliterally used to bblackmail and guiilt trap someone, Tara thought somehow she will manage to win Adil and live a happy rich life. Tara was already ready to leave Adil she packed all her jwelry before, Tara created a scene on the dining table just make everyone think of Adil as a vvilliian. Tara said to adil we both are same before leaving him but they aren't the same, making someone marry you by leaking the tape how can this be justified? also in case of the photographer he said he lives with a girl, jassi asked him did he love that girl, the photographer said yes. then why did the photographer kissed jassi in the wedding fort like location? they make out with someone after falling in love with a different person and none of this is addressed like it is all normal to make out with anyone after being in love to one person🤯 this show does normalize cheating that is for sure. You know they say, "how you get them is how you lose them". Whatever happened to Tara reminds me of that. Tara did the same to Natasha and Faiza did it to her. Yes, Tara did mess up but it was also Adil's choice to cheat. With or without Tara, he'd have cheated on Natasha with another secretary. But Faiza lost more. Tara was a best friend who'd give up everything for her, even offered Faiza to stay with them after her divorce. there's a season 2 coming soon so gotta see how it unfolds from this ending. P.s- Jaby kinda looks uncomfortable with Karan and that guy making out?

A nuance that people seem to have missed is that when Adil proposed to Tara, he was looking wistfully at Faiza. Any other series would have made Adil and Faiza, the two star-crossed lovers as the focus of the story and Tara, the homewrecker as their foil. But Zoya has inverted the script. Because we start looking at this world with Tara's eyes and first see Adil as a jerk, even when everything is revealed in this episode, we can feel empathy for all three characters and see them for who they are (ie, regular people like us who are not black and white). That is the purpose of the many flashbacks in the story. They give us context and remind us that our initial assumptions were not all correct but should still not be completely discarded.

He knows that the directors and the team behind all these series are watching their reactions so he just talks as if he is some big director or something and also like he is giving the reviews to the directors and makers of the show. The wedding in this Episode is based on the love story and marriage of the daughter of a very influential Telgu actor's daughter. She was fearful for her husband's life that's why she called the press after her wedding. Second part, about Tara walking away with Jewellery. As per Indian law, all the Jewelry that a married woman is gifted or acquired during a marriage is considered 'Stree Dhan' meaning Woman's wealth.The married women has complete right over it, the husband or his family has no claim over it. So technically she is no thief. Morally, is Tara a manipulative gold digger? May be, Yes!

I have some problems with Jaby's comments.. Achara understands the cultural nuances so well..she has a better understanding and Jaby please really listen to her rather than just showing that you're listening..First of all, Vikrant was married to a girl because gay marriage is still illegal in India.And most probably Vikrant remained closeted until he met Arjun again (the abuse he faced in his teenage life may have aggravated it). Both the love scenes between the two were really needed and most of us loved those scenes because there isn't a single show in India which explored lovemaking between two men so beautifully.. The dialogue between the two in these scenes is multi-layered and deep..You could really see a combination of love and guilt there.. The bath tub kiss was necessary because Arjun opened up about his abuse only to Vikrant, who kissed him because he knew exactly how it felt to be abused and hence, wanted to show him that he is always there for him. Please don't compare the show with Game of thrones.. Its completely different and GOT's end was extremely disappointing.. And who said that rich people can't criticize other rich people? Every strata of society has issues and they made a story out of it.. Tara blasted Adil at last because that was the moment when she completely understood that Adil will never stop cheating her and that was the time she decided to leave..Achara is right about Adil thinking of Tara as a pet.. And tara didn't steal anything.. In India, jewellery is called as Streedhan which means 'Woman's money'.. She just took her own jewelry and left everything behind.

Who is recommending these culturally nuanced shows to Jaby? He doesn’t understand these things (out of ignorance or maybe out of lack of exposure) so obviously his views will not match our views on the show. And like always Achara gets everything because she understands the cultural issues plus she is highly intelligent. Let’s make peace with the fact that Jaby has no idea about the life of an average Indian, how we grow up, how we think, the biases, the show off, the inequality, and the kind of challenges we face, specifically women. And even if he watches 5 more Indian shows he will have the same reaction. He will need to meet such people and look at their life closely to understand everything. Even all his Indian friends cannot teach him that. I bet this is going to happen with Mirzapur 2 again. I think both Jaby and the subscribers need to understand that this show is made for Indian audience! It’s okay not to like things that are not made for you. It’s just a show, move on! Keep calm! 😎 India is a complex place and we Indians are even more complicated!

Yeah, women being called stupid is a reminder of centuries and millenia of oppression of women. Saying that just re-affirms into the mindsets of those men the barbaric sexism. Women calling men stupid is only when a man is actually stupid. Even though the men might not mean to be barbaric about it, that statement is enough to remind them of the casual sexism they've faced their entire lives even in 2020. And when they were outspoken and taking a stand against the norms, they were called 'stupid' for demanding their rights and their freedom.

I get jaby. But, I am sure the writers deliberately made a choice to keep everything in the gray and make it as subjective as they could so that we as the audience can decide who we like.

Exactly. Its all subjective. Thats why i love this show. Damn.

I suddenly rediscovered my respect and love for my fellow Indians in this comment section. It's rare to see a comment section that's so humane, sane and socially liberal. All is not lost.

@@abdulquadirshekh6409 To celebrate their love on a legal level. To have this event in their family so that they can remember it like the straight couple do.

I don't understand these foreigners..first they don't want one dimensional character..but when a grey character is shown they complain about that they don't understand him/her or could not follow her.. They should first make sure what they want.. LoL

It was only Jaby tho. Thanks to the Asian blood in dear Achara, she's a sweetie.

All the characters are complex and shady, that's the intention of show, it's actually a dark show which is behind the bright or shiny exterior so it was not a conventional concept so its better to accept and acknowledge the unconventional tone of it. They were all imperfect that's what made it realistic or relatable,moreover it's an Indian show so it's kinda ok that if you people don't connect much with it. Loved Achara's reaction as always❤️and Thanks to both of you for reacting to this.
