Sparky here. Saw my first CNC machine back in 1967 while attending a Vo Tech high school. It ran a paper punched tape. Amazing how advanced they came. Wired in several of them over the years in tool & die and machine shops. One shop had a dozen CNC machines and one operator ran three of them 24/6. Money makers if you can keep them running g like that.

Very cool! I'm too young to have seen the paper punch machines. I can't imagine trying to program one of those.

As an owner myself 08 was a tough year. By the middle of the year, I also machine parts for the pharmaceutical industry. It came back & started paying the bills. That was good advice on starting out. Stick to what you know ( basic ) and make money and move on from there. As for ISO, I'm right there with you. I make it to your print and better. Give you material certs and first article inspection The same as ISO without the 15K-20K cert.

This is so cool. Right as the video starts I see an ancient hem saw which I was actually just hired to run at Lehigh Fluid Power in Lambertville NJ. I was wondering when I would see another one of these. Funny he says they change those blades out as often as they do. Those are $600 blades and I try my absolutely hardest to make them last at least 2 weeks. Can’t believe they brake that many in such a short period of time, something must not be right😅.

Very cool! What material are you cutting? Stainless can be pretty nasty, especially the high temp alloys like Hastelloy/Inco/waspaloy etc. I’m not 100% sure but I believe they get the blades resharpened. Do you do that with the blades on your saw?
@nicojordan3542Күн бұрын
@ anything from case hardened chromed to 316 stainless. Most of those materials you just mentioned would be a no but we definitely cut a decent amount of stainless.

Where are you located? I know a lot of shops in eastern PA that would love to hire you! Also, i see you're a motorcycle rider - fellow motorcycle fan here - I ride a Husqvarna TE300 and prefer hard enduro riding. I used to have a DRZ400 and did a lot of dirt road/ abandoned road exploring. My dad has a Tenere 700 and Honda Transalp.

@@chadschmidt570 I'm 30 miles away from this shop I'm in JT. I've been a tech for more then 45 yrs riding and racing for 51 yrs logged over 1.3 mil miles to date and fined it hard to slow my mind down. I have this need to find better ways to do just about everything and having the small shop I have helps. I have 3 more yrs to go before I give up my day job but if I was in a shop like this I would keep going part time for a longer time...

To answer the first question ?? Would I start a Machine Shop again ? Definitely NO. Lots of better industries that pay better with a lot less stress ??? But saying that, I still Love what I do. Great interview with an experienced operator. Everything this guy said is totally true right down to the training schools who still think it's the middle of the 1960's ??? I hear the same thing in my part of the world. Always pushing students to learn Too much of the old technology ?????? Still messing around with HSS tools 🙄 As for starting a shop ? Either have the $$$$$$ you need to start or kill yourself trying to get started. That goes for Any business not just a Machine Shop. And where possible when starting out. Always try your best to avoid bringing in a business partner. It seems like a great way to get started. But it usually doesn't stay that way for long ?????

We just started a metal fabrication shop in PA as well. Had an offer from someone to invest and ended up turning it down. Simple stuff, coil cutting, panel and wall system manufacturing, trim bending and everything is automated to an extent. Just getting going officially this week I’m super stoked. I have a whole life ahead of me haha.
