Girlfriend used Splash (but nothing happened)
My girlfriend continues her journey through the Pokémon series this week with Pokémon Emerald! When it came to choosing a third generation game to play there were lots of debates over whether she should play the remakes or the originals. Up until now she's only played remakes, but I think this is the right place to start playing the originals. Emerald is what some may consider the definitive version of Ruby and Sapphire, so I thought it was a good choice for her gen 3 playthrough. She had a good time with this one, so don't count out Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire yet! We may take another visit to Hoenn when we finally make it to the 3DS!

@emelychoi958 Honestly, Id argue that not ending the run after a whiteout feels more in the spirit of a nuzlocke anyway! Because one of the great things about nuzlockes is that they force you to think about and use Pokemon you might not have given a glance normally. Well, losing your A-team in a nuzlocke means you have to pick up the pieces with a buncha goobers from the box, which means you might now have to use Pokemon that normally wouldn't even be your 3rd or 4th choice!

From what I know, the reason Sheer Cold managed to hit as frequently as it did was BECAUSE the team was underleveled. Sheer Cold's accuracy increases for every level higher the user is to the target. And since Walrein, Tentacruel and Manectric were 9 & 8 levels below it respectively, the odds of it hitting increased. Regardless, this run was amazing! Hopefully... Gen 4 is a pick-me-up. Though... That's all I'll say for time being :)

Yeah, this is it. If I recall correctly, the chance is 30+(each level higher than the target)%. So in that situation it was 39% and 38% chance. Yes, it's guaranteed hit at 70 levels above and it also ignores accuracy checks.

No, Game Over is part of the dead Pokemon rules, you could say the player dies when it loses a battle, although the whole point of the Nuzlocke is being a personal challenge so you can just, continue it until no Pokemon are left or even revive some, no one is forcing rules.

Sheer Cold is in a category of insta-kill moves where they have a chance of working [base 30% for Sheer Cold] and they increase their odds the greater the level difference is in favor of their user [so the 8-10 level difference means a plus 8-10% to Sheer Cold's accuracy].

@@robbe2647 This comment reminds of two things. First was this math professor who would give out a homework of flipping 200 coin tosses & recording the results. He would allow people to fake it, but he always knew who would cheat & actually did the work, mainly because people would always underestimate how many 7, 8, and/or 9 consecutive results would come up. Second, when the Fire Emblem games were first being ported over to the US, the devs would actually boost the odds of hits because western people don't understand how odds really work (for instance the 95% hit rate was boosted to being 99.99% because Americans feel that both odds are essentially the same). The statistics community has a rule that anything that has a 5% or greater chance of happening is considered an usual (ie normal) result (so the odds have to be less than 5% for statisticians to consider it a freak occurrence). TLDR; The 3x Sheer Cold hits are unlucky, but not preposterous or unusual.

I love how quickly she grew attached to her starter. That attachment for your pokemon is what Nuzlockes are all about, and it's amazing to see her reactions to both the new pokemon she's seeing as well as how quickly she's learning the techniques- stat boosting moves are something I still barely remember to use lol I'm actually really excited to see a Black or White one. It's a region with only new pokemon in the main story, and a great storyline I think she'd enjoy.

The chance that Sheer Cold hits is 30% plus the level difference (as long as the user is an equal or higher level) so it isn't 100% accurate until the user is at least 70 levels higher.

Her team being under leveled came back to bite her in the worst way. Sheer Cold and other OHKO moves get 1% more accuracy per level the user is above the target, meaning each of those were closer to 40% accurate than 30%. Still super unlucky that 3 out of 5 uses hit but not as unlikely as most would realize. I personally feel that if you guys intend to continue doing Nuzlockes like this it would probably be best to allow cheated in Rare Candies since it's pretty clear that Taryn doesn't want to grind (and I honestly don't blame her) and just implement level caps, where you can't level your team up higher than the next gym leader or last member of the Elite Four's highest leveled Pokemon. As an example, when prepping for Misty you could level your team up to the same level as her Starmie, or when prepping for the Kanto Elite Four you can level up to the same level as Lance's Dragonite. Great content as always, loved that ending.

no, it did not make it thru the entire game. in fact the Nuzleaf died agaist a voltorb that used explosion. but the original nuzlock was a comics, and the Nuzleaf in question had the face of the caracter of Locke in the serie "lost". this end was tragic and to never forgeting him, the community named it "nuzlock". @@peshomighty5051

I think the accuracy of 1-hit KO moves like Sheer Cold improves with the level difference between the user and the target. Going in underlevelled was the critical mistake in the end.

When you were talking about all the hm moved, what I figured out is that nuzleaf is the only non-legendary Pokémon that can learn rock smash, strength, flash, and cut, so in my play though so I didn’t have to worry about those, I got a nuzleaf and taught it all that and I never had to worry about those hm moves

My only gripe with Emerald is replacing Steven with Wallace as the Champion and then making another Water trainer to be the 8th Gym. There was literally no reason for this change and it does nothing to improve the game in any way. In fact, I think that aspect is a worse experience then in Ruby and Sapphire.

A big reason that Walrein landed so many sheer colds is that the hitrate goes up based on how many level's the Pokemon is above the target. So instead of the common 30% Tarny had to deal with around 38% hitrate. Still not much, but I wouldn't be surprised if it mattered.
