Agreed. My first playthrough of Bloodborne stalled out at rom. Shadows of Yharnam took a very long time for me to beat (especially with that horrible runback) and dealing with that potato spider afterwards tested my patience just a bit too much. A few months later I start a new playthrough, armed with experience and the cum chalice, and I proceeded to blow through the game.

Facing Artorias after hearing so much about him (in this game and DS3) is like meeting a celebrity. In my case, I was both ecstatic to finally find him and sad that we could not get to talk with him. At least, we got to communicate with our swords (specifically his, through my body).

"Stomach the poison of failure" I cannot stress enough, how scared some people are of failure irl and how i've seen video games change that for them. It didn't really magically make them better people, just gave them a safe space to explore what was already in them.

Forcing myself to play XCOM: Enemy Unknown on Ironman Mode for my first campaign did wonders for my anxiety. That first playthrough was so formative for me that I literally can't play the game ever again. Nothing will ever re-capture that first time.

That first replay of Dark Souls is exhilarating, doubly so if you really struggled on your first go-around. I remember my second playthrough well - it was a dagger only playthrough. Why? Because I had to learn to parry last minute for Gwyn on my first run and this was basically getting revenge, as I did NOT appreciate having to change up my playstyle completely with Gwyn. I was determined to put that new parry skill to good use and parried every enemy (that can be parried) to make a point. And did so in a fraction of the time of my first playthrough. It felt incredible. People always say the first playthrough is the best one for these games but honestly? The victory lap of a second playthrough, when you know the areas and have the right mindset, that was something truly special for me. As an aside, that parry playthrough made me really appreciate parrying. Probably why I liked Bloodborne so much too.

12:22 In my first playthrough I somehow ended up in the Tomb of Giants rather early without any light source or the ability to warp. I think I even did that before Sen's Fortress. Finding my way back to Firelink Shrine was one of the most memorable experiences I've ever had in a game. After that everything else the game threw at me felt easy.

Back in the day, Younger Bro was so smug that he beat the game before I did because I usually beat games in a shorter time frame than he would. Told him that I was taking my time and finding everything I wanted before facing him (literally did everything, including the DLC, just before him but was doing a little leveling and crafting beforehand). He kept being smug about it and told me to go try at least. I relented after he badgered me for a while. I walked in and two shot him. My brother was pissed, both because I killed Solaire my first playthrough instead of saving him (killed all the bugs and did what I needed otherwise, but the game still infected him... not like I didn't try) and because I beat him so easily. For context, he made a "paladin" build and had Solaire help him, still having to struggle and beat him after a few tries. My build was... unorthodox to say the least. I call it "Tank Mage," but really it was all Big Hat Logan gear maxed out (including the catalysts), Moonlight Greatsword maxed out, Cleansing Greatshield, high Int, high Attune, high Str, and middling everything else. All I did was walk in and cast 2 dark sorceries and he went down.

It's pretty funny, you said your GF was too slow to riposte Gwyn but she was actually doing it too fast LOL There's a quirk with Dark Souls that is ingrained into my soul and causes me to sometimes take ripostes slower in newer games too. When you parry one handed then swap to two handed right after, you have to wait a moment. Take a step first, usually is enough time, to basically...clear the animation queue for the riposte to work. She was just swinging too fast! What a fun video, very good!

@NoForksGiven Жыл бұрын
For anyone struggling to two hand a weapon after parrying, if you do too fast you won't get it. You also won't get it if you do it too slow. There's a sweet spot where you have to wait like half a second while also scooting a bit to the left. It's not as bad as you think though and it's the same timing for every enemy you can parry so you can get plenty of practice on weak hollows to learn the timing, just not the ones with the shields. They aren't aggressive enough

About that "too slow for ripost": it just not about speed, actually. It's also about the fact that if you parry, switch to two-hand and press attack, you'll NEVER ripost. You need to walk a bit into an enemy and only THEN ripost will work. And, of course, you are still on timer from the parry. Clunky old mechanic from clunky old game, I guess... Also, it's always fun to see people returning to their first Souls game after they completed a bunch of them. Especially for people like me, with 10k+ hours in DS1 alone))

You don't have to walk, you just have to wait until the left hand weapon's icon becomes fully greyed out on the bottom left of the screen. So she was actually too fast rather than too slow.

Tarny's experience with Gwyn reminds me of my first time through dark souls. I was so scared of the fight and tried to play it regular. My friend literally told me to get good at parrying to beat it. And so I did. 4 parries in a row with one follow up hit at the end killed him after a few hours of trying without parrying. So just git gud I guess right

Not caring about losing souls/bloodechoes/runes is when you know you've made it as a souls player. Once you can just shrug off the mistake and continue on without that extra bit of health or damage those souls would've afforded you, that's when the anxiety of a souls game just dissipates and it's only more enjoyable to play these games.
