It's a song from the '20's, and the shimmy was a dance. It's still being enjoyed! She puts a great spin on it.

Not that Judith Durham does harm to this song; it's just that she attacks it with a sharp, staccato (abrasive) voice. Madeleine Peyroux's voice is lively, laced with amusement and honey.

We should be glad whenever any artist performs the old songs and keep them alive. Too bad you only listen to perfect performances. ;)

If Mark Maj (above comment) is correct, it's not even Madeleine performing the above song. Whether or not that's true, I think Judith's approach is more of a bold and brassy one (think Tina Turner?) and whoever is in the above video is singing in a more easy going (not to say easy listening) style. As always, it comes down to personal preference. I would venture to wager, however, that Judith could effortlessly perform this song the way it is done in this video, whereas the singer above could not do it in Judith's style.

It is Madeleine from disc 3 of this album. www.allmusic.com/album/celebrating-20-years-of-the-festival-international-de-jazz-de-montreal-1980-2000-mw0000211060

This was also sung by Betty Grable in the movie Wabash Avenue. Just like the old vaudeville times of bump and grind..

Having just listened to Judith Durham sing this song, I'm afraid nothing this girl can sing touches the very Clear clarion vocals of Durham

Judith was unique and wonderful. madeline does a terrific job. Two totally different artists. You might as well crticise Louis Armstrong because he sounds different to Sinatra! Enjoy all well performed music!@@joanbillingham4365

Just out trying to find something that comes close to Judith, but it's really a challenge. What I'm hearing here is very nice, and I could have enjoyed it even more had I not stumbled across Judith's version. I've been spoiled.
