12 years no tobacco and 11 years no alcohol and there are days that i can literally taste the Crown and Coke and i want a drink. Then i think about the bad that comes with the drinking and i just put it outta my mind. For anybody out there reading this just know that you can quit. Just take it one day at a time and keep your mind occupied and you will win the good fight

It really needs to be more 'normal' for someone to say they don't drink just because they don't want to! Too many people assume that if you don't drink there's something 'wrong' with you, or you're 'weird' or 'boring' (lol). Had a really, really bad experience when I was 18 and haven't drank for 8 years now. It's so nice to save money, feel healthy and enjoy an evening with friends where I'm not feeling sick and embarrassing myself!

Agreed! Every time I go out or even just visit my parents, I get asked if I want a glass of wine or some other alcoholic drink and people think it's weird that I say no. Some even try to pressure me to just have one sip, which makes me uncomfortable. I stopped drinking when I saw an ex get wasted, which really freaked me out. I haven't touched the stuff since Christmas 2016.

I have a similar story/relationship with alcohol. I've been sober for 2 years now and it was the best decision of my life. I have so much more energy, my happiness is more consistent and my physical health is at its best! I have social anxiety and I thought that I would be much more awkward in social situations without alcohol, but it ended up being the opposite. I think I was relying on alcohol to make me more social, but the way I was socializing wasn't true to who I was. I find that I'm much more genuine in my social interactions and I have more fun at parties! AND NO MORE HANGOVERS !!!! congrats on your year sober

I decided to give up alcohol 20 days ago. I was heavy binge drinking to avoid thinking aboug things and also substituting it for food. I already had such bad anxiety and the alcohol was giving me even worse panic attacks and depression. I was having some serious existential crises and crying every day. Anyway to anyone suffering i noticed the benefits after about 6 days of no drinking so stay strong ❤ Thank you for sharing this video.

Currently starting on a no drinking journey! I’m motivating myself by the amount of money I spend on it! Every time my roommates want to drink I’m going to ask them how much they spent on that night’s alcohol and I’m going to put that money into a travel fund !!! I’m glad I found this video! I’m a 20 year old student who has been sober for 4 months and it’s hard but so good. I was a binge drinker and could never just have “one drink”, I’d always end up black out drunk. Then I’d end up depressed and anxious. It’s hard sometimes but I feel so much better, it just isn’t worth it.

Having one drink is so very difficult for as soon as you have a taste of it, it's in your system and actually makes you crave more. That's why having one or two drinks is so hard to do and after 3 or 4 drinks you're drunk and are incapable of judging your intake. It's setting yourself up to fail. Booze is best avoided completely.

I love this video ,I’m 27 and don’t drink alcohol and haven’t really done so since I was younger, I think after a while you just grow tired of the cycle of abuse you throw at your body and the meaningless feeling that alcohol gives you, I think a lot of people feel they need it to have a good time and that’s the main problem... lack of confidence perhaps, but it’s really refreshing to see you embracing this lifestyle and treating your body right. P.s love your content 💕

I can 100% relate to your story! People tend not to get it! The so called cons of not drinking (grabbing a drink for stress, for celebrating, for crying, for any excuse) is nothing compared to being able to sleep properly, loose weight, save hundreds of £€ on alcohol, enjoy the weekends more, having more energy, not being depressed or drastically reducing it... the list is almost endless.

dear maddie, this video hit me on an emotional level. i think we're very similiar (i've had an eating disorder, binge drinking etc). and your video inspires me SO MUCH. i'm currently on my way to being sober and completely stop drinking. it took me YEARS to realise i just can't drink moderately and that most of the time i drank to drown my sorrows. thank you SO much for being so honest and making a video about an issue not many people adress, because the line is thin to being called an alcoholic (which dreads me, but i have to admit my drinking behaviour was very disordered and ill). not being hangover and literally wasting lifetime is one of my biggest gains and i'm super duper trying to just cut alcohol and don't feel ashamed for speaking up and telling people, when they ask me why i don't drink. so yeah, thank you so much, you're such a lovely personality!
@MadeleineOlivia

I am so so so happy to hear your story! This is exactly why I make videos talking up about my experiences. As so many of us experience similar things! And you're so totally right about there being a thin line with alcohol. Just like any mental disorder there are extremes. And just because you aren't downing a bottle of vodka in the morning, doesn't mean you aren't dealing with issues you need to seek help with or look into. I am so happy that you are learning to overcome your issues and pursue a happier and more productive life! I wish you all the best

I'm finally trying to quit alcohol and rewatching all of these videos helps me a lot (even if they're two years old) ! ^^ I'm sick of feeling like I'm addicted to it and I'm sick of how much control it has over my life. I never had a serious problem or anything (definitely drank more than I was supposed to but like, who doesn't) but I couldn't drink moderately either and honestly I can't remember the last time I spent even two weeks without any alcohol at all. Everyone is addicted on some level, it's a spectrum. That's why I quit smoking two years ago, I was tired of feeling controlled by the addiction. But somehow society makes us think it's okay to have a glass of wine (or two, or three) every night, to "relax". I'm really glad I quit smoking first because I feel like quitting alcohol is going to be much harder haha especially because it's so deeply engraved in our society. At least smoking is generally frowned upon in most countries. But I'm so motivated and I can't wait to get my life back !!

great video Madeleine! I stopped drinking too, around six months ago and it was absolutely the right decision for me. I used to drink every weekend growing up and suppressed a lot of feelings with it. And then I just couldn't find enough reasons to drink anymore and so many why I shouldn't. It didn't make me feel good, not whilst drinking neither after. In social situations it can be awkward not to drink but I think it says a lot about the people you are with and the situation you are in if they make you feel weird about it. You should always be able to feel conformable just being yourself. Overall I feel much more fresh, more in control, I have more energy, my relationships with people are more genuine and less shitty things happen to me. I'm more connected to my true self.

Your hair is looking lovely in this video. My views on my personal consumption is "everything in moderation." I won't deny myself a glass of wine after a particularly hard day at work, or with a nice family meal, but I'd never drink so much that I'm feeling ill or more than 2 or 3 times a week max. It's more like 2 or 3 glasses a month. I've never felt pressured to drink around others though.

Your last video inspired me to quit as well, I didn’t drink for 6 months. Yesterday was my birthday so I had some drinks and I realized I don’t miss it at all and actually even feel like it’s such a waste to even spend time / money on this. Not drinking changed my mindset and I became more positive person generally. All the pros you mention I experienced myself. I defiantly will continue sober in 2018.

Thank you for posting. I watched your first video back in 2017 a few times. It’s taken a lot of failures to admit that I have the same problem you do. I’m a binge drinker. It’s good to hear stories from people with a similar problem. You think like, “well it’s only on the weekends, so it’s not a big deal..” but it is a big deal. Especially when you’re blacking out, getting sick, and being reckless. It’s basically voluntary pain. It’s sick, and dangerous. Anyway, thanks again. I needed to hear that you made it. Congrats on your first year of sobriety!

Everything you explained throughout the video, especially your history with alcohol, is exactly the situation I’ve put myself in these past years due to alcohol. I also started drinking (and bingedrinking) every weekend (sometimes even 3-4 days a week or more) when I was around 15. Now I’m 19 and I’ve been bingedrinking several times a week EVERY week for years, but I have finally made the decision to stop completely. It’s only been a month, since it was my new year resolution too, but I really feel like this will be permanent and that I’m completely done with alcohol. I hope to continue this “journey” as succesfully as you have 😇

Very well said- great update and info! thank you! all the best to you..you made a great descison. I have just quit myself after many years of drinking alcohol. It feels great! And for anyone struggling as I did..continue to find what works for you to change your mindset. IMO it is ALL about the mind. Its not about willpower. I read ONE YEAR NO BEER and something switched in my brain. It was the positive reinforcement about the good things that can happen in your life not drinking as opposed to the negatives that we all know already. My mantra is- I love NOT drinking!

I did a Dry January + a few more weeks. I’m ditching drinking for Lent now. I’m a lot like you - if I have a few, I’ll want a lot. So, I now will only drink when the great experience will be heightened even further with alcohol (anime cons, raves, etc.). I’ve never needed it to be social - it just happened to be what everyone does. Non-alcoholic beers do just fine here! I don’t struggle with addiction or anything. I just HATE hangovers & I like minimizing calories! No reason to drink once a week. Once a month? Sure, let’s go! But that’s about my Max now - & I’m completely chill with that.

Thank you so much about making videos about alcohol! Not many people, especially girls, talk about these kinda things. I had a similiar problem with bing drinking and parting. Going sober was definitely a difficult journey. And my friends, well "drinking buddies", didn't make it any easier. They were riminding me all the stupid things I did when I was drunk and they would say things like: "Can't belive you are not drinking! I mean YOU, the one who got so drunk on last party and did this and that...and bla bla bla Come on! That was fun! You're so boring when sober!". But thankfully these situations and difficulties helped me realised who were my real friends. The ones who understood my reasons for giving up alkohol and supported me.

I have almost been a month sober and have experienced HUGE benefits!! This video was great and have decided to try to go longer without alcohol like you have... My main main problem is my biggest passion is partying and dancing and music I love raving and festivals and dancing any time I have the opportunity! These events usually involve so much alcohol and drugs and I'm scared of how my friends will react and how I will cope in these situations without the booze I'm only 20 so far the positives outweigh the negatives but I know when I move back to England the fast pace life of partying is going to tempt me into drinking again But I binge so much and hate myself when I do! Sorry to go on but I would love to know how you feel about it xx

Thank you so much for posting this video, it has re-inspired me. I had very similar issues as you, alcohol took up so much of my brain space and always knocked me back in my progression. I had an ED and it was a main driver for the anxiety and behaviours. I decided to give it up for a year...made it to 6 months and thought I could find balance. Realise now that that was a relapse and that really I need to cut it out forever. It is so engrained in society, but when you leave it behind your mindset flips and you can't go blindly into poisoning yourself. If you need alcohol to connect then I feel that the connection is fake. Alcohol is literally used as disinfectant in hospitals! I think that one day we will look back on alcohol the way we do now with smoking. It needs a health warning on bottles. But just like mean, the industries have control. Anyway, thanks again. Will you be continuing with sobriety?

Being asked why: this year I went to the doctors for a yearly check-up and told him in 2017 I started the process of drinking less in order to stop completely and even he asked me why. Was kind of baffled that a doctor didn't even see this as a positive thing... He then told me "But you can have a drink or two here and there"... Sure I could but alcohol is not good for our health, wouldn't a doctor think this is a good initiative? 😅

My plan is to not drink for 30 days and then reintroduce but moderately drink. However, on day 4 now (which is still normal for me because I normally don't drink much at all through the week and binge drinking on the weekend) and I sort of see this as a thing for me not wanting to drink anymore. But, the goal is to give it up for a month and drink moderately (a beer with like every other dinner or something). If I just don't want to drink after the 30 days anymore, then I have to say I would be fine with that :)

The liver gets fat from alcohol. If you stop drinking it recovers. So whenever you want a healthy liver just stop for a while. After a year or two your liver is fine.

I actually don't drink, I've never had alcohol and while I don't plan on starting, I know that the reason I don't want to is that I'm scared, which obviously isn't a very healthy mindset. So I've been spending the past few months trying to discover what it is I fear so much and how to develop a healthier mindset towards the idea of drinking in general, even if I decide not to. Any advice? :)

I'm 21 and i've been legally allowed to drink since i was 16 but I don't see the appeal in it at all. I don't understand why people need alcohol (or something else) to have a fun time.. And if by chance you have people around you that pressure you into drinking while you don't want to, cut them out of your life.

I live on a college campus and when you live on campus there is literally always something going on. And you're around people all the time. So my issue is on the weekends I have a really hard time saying no to going out even if I don't really want to because all my friends are. And in college, like in the real world, wherever people are, alcohol is likely there. And I don't have a problem with drinking really, I get properly drunk maybe twice a month. But there are nights that I really want to stay in and I feel like an asshole saying no.

What can you say about drinking? There is almost no conversation. It is just quit, quit, quit..and so I suspect you either drink and enjoy it or quit. If you drink, maybe keep tabs (easy) and log the grams of alcohol, and set a monthly total limit based on a good daily average. No body wants to take responsibility for encouraging others to drink with words, because it already happens automatically socially. So the only words you hear are negative things about alcohol. And all the reasons you shouldn't drink etc. But many people enjoy drinking and they do feel guilty about it but it is not the deal breaker and they don't make it into a big deal. So if you drink, there's no need to talk about it much until you feel you are in trouble. Just enjoy it and try to keep your own private checks in place. I'm not drinking right now, but I do not want to permanently quit unless I have completely given up on my ability to master myself enough in the life as I see it at the time. I hate the narcissistic self-imposed fortress mentality I must impose on myself not drinking and I hate the denying-to-others feeling that my soberness requires. It looks like attention seeking and self-congratulatory grandiosity. On the other hand, those first ten seconds in the morning you wake up and realise you have no hangover, and that you didn't drink, still works, even now in my fifth month.

I can relate to this in so many ways going through such a hard time right now, recently went on a date which seemed literally perfect started off in a bar connected really well in so many ways after that we ended up going to another bar and playing pool ended up playing doubles met these other people who were really cool and generally had a lot of fun. Finally the downfall came the last part of the evening. She asked me to go to a bar called funhouse the strange thing is her friend ended up being there and I can't answer why. So fast forward end of the night Im so drunk end up remember going to the top of the stairs and the next minute im kicked out of the bar I was told from her the evening was great but to be honest I wasn't very nice and to hear that kills me it hurts so much knowing I had such a connection, rock music, pool , losing someone which she is going through now and finally childhood experiences. I tried messaging her a few times and I have been ghosted so far on day 5 still no response if I could take this back and just try to proove that this isn't the real me im not a bad guy I just made a terrible mistake and its killing me. Hope someone sees this and inboxes me would be really nice to have a chat to maybe get some advice or just have a friendly conversation would mean a lot to me just to have someone to talk to maybe I can even get advice to atleast get a response from her again.
