I cannot imagine a more concise and at the same time so thoughtfully explained this most important feature of the fabrics journey throughout the stitching process. You put everything into context so well that even I could appreciate the symphony that a well-tuned machine performs best when in synchronous adjustment. This was a very valuable tutorial explained perfectly as I see it. Thank You Mike Kirwan - Kenmore, WA

If your sewing machine doesn't have foot pressure adjustment options, there are feet that have sliding posts with a lock button so you can raise the foot attachment itself. Once it is past the "summit" of the thick seam or pleat, it automatically lowers to follow the fabric thickness. These are available for many machine brands and even embroidery machines. Usually under $20 too. Check compatibility before buying. One name brand I can think of is Honey Sew. But there are other more generic brands. And they come in low shank or high shank sewing machines. I think low shank is more a more common sewing machine build.

Hi, thanks for a very informative video. I am a bit confused with the demonstration on the Viking machine. You mention "reducing the pressure towards 0" on the dial and mention that no.1 is for lighter fabrics. I was under the impression from the video that the lighter fabrics need "increased pressure" not reduced pressure. Thanks for your advice.
@MadetoSew

Hi Anne, I understand that this is a little bit confusing. I actually called up my sewing machine dealer to chat to him about this issue. A lot of sewing machine manufacturers will state that the foot pressure has nothing to do with the feeding of the fabric; my dealer says that he doesn't really agree with that. Anyway there are times when you may want to 'reduce the foot pressure with a lightweight fabric', if you find that the foot pressure is almost stretching the fabric. I find this is more common with lightweight jersey and stretch fabrics, you don't want the pressure of the foot to be stretching the fabric so then you may choose to 'reduce' rather than 'increase' the foot pressure. I will also be honest with you and say that in my opinion some machines are better at this than others. I have tired working with the foot pressure on the Husqvarna and do not find it to be that effective. Especially when you compare it to the Bernina example that I share in the video. My new Bernina is probably the first machine that I have really used this feature and found it to be useful; and I think the key fabrics where I have made an amendment are: thick wadding and velvet. Does this clear up the question? Basically you may need to go either way with a lightweight fabric, it depends on how to the machine is feeding it through, is it able to feed it through? It is stretching etc. it is unfortunately a case by case situation. Let me know if you have any other questions. Aneka x

I think you might have solved the problems I have been having sewing through several thicknesses of quilting fabric and flannel. I have been adjusting the pressure on the presser foot with discouraging results. The walking foot, however, might just solve the issue. Thank you. Fingers crossed!

Hi I am trying to learn how to sew with my simplicity pro machine I bought years ago but it didn't come with a manual.. my brother helped me to get it set up so I could hem my uniform pants but I'm having a huge issue getting the stitches to not be so loose?? Is there a trick to the foot pedal?
@user-22-
@user-22- 4 жыл бұрын
Oh my goodness! Thank you, yours was the only video that really explains about foot issues. As a bonus you actually show a Viking! I have the Emerald 183 & have *terrible* problems with the material not feeding properly when beginning a seam or when going over folds of fabric, even thinner cotton folds. I have to begin an inch forward from the edge, stitch in reverse then forward, or push the fabric with an awl which doesn't always work either. Very frustrating. Other than beginning a seam or folds it works just fine. Never needed to change the setting for the dogs before, my 183 has 1-7 on the dial. Help? I've also tried other feet, I have a walking foot but it does not fit this machine. So a lower number for thicker folds or higher number?
@MadetoSew
@MadetoSew 4 жыл бұрын
I am so sorry you are having such an issue with your Husqvarna. I would recommend a walking foot, as this should help the issue. However it can also be a good idea to play with the foot pressure. You may want to try moving the dial both to a lower number and a higher number to see the difference. The reason I say both is that different machines and manuals say different things. I have even found contradictory information on the website verses the manual for my Bernina. Personally I feel that if the fabric is thicker you would want less pressure (because the fabric is higher under the foot). However some manuals will say that thicker fabric needs MORE pressure to be able to move the fabric through the machine. It sounds like your machine might need MORE pressure to help it grip the fabric? However do some tests changing the dial in both directions. I hope this helps? Sorry that it isn't a completely right / wrong answer, I usually have a play with my machine to see what works for the specific project and fabric choice. Best, Aneka

Aneka, I have a question. Does a removable stabilizer leave loose stitches, once the stabilizer is gone and the fabric is "thinner" than when the stitches were made?
@MadetoSew
@MadetoSew 6 жыл бұрын
Hello, no it won't leave loose stitches (or I have never experienced this problem). The stabilisers I use are very lightweight, but stiff enough to help provide that extra structure for the sewing machine to move the fabric through. I hope this helps? If you have a problem with this feel free to email me pictures and I will help. Aneka

Hi Jason, I am trying to think what could be causing this. I have had a customer with this problem in the past and I am trying to think what we did to fix it. I probably would recommend that you get it serviced. I think that is what my customer did and the service engineer was able to fix the issue. Just find somebody good that you can take it too. Let me know how you get on. Aneka

@MadetoSew
@MadetoSew 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jessica, have you amended the differential feed on your machine? You probably want to have the diff feed on normal - I think this is 1 for your machine? Are you lifting the front of the presser foot and putting the fabric underneath before you start sewing? Let me know? Aneka
