I think gold leafing is just really thin gold... A higher karat bc it's softer and can be hammered out as thin as it is. There are probably cheaper kinds that are other stuff though.

And if it is actual gold (which it presumably is by the way it behaved when you handled it) it is very non-reactive and therefore not toxic. Gold leafing can also be used for food items after all it's technically safe to consume

Chemist and passionate chef here, gold leafing is 24k gold usually, body and digestive safe! I have made desserts and lip art makeup with that ^^

Lex, gold leafing is REAL GOLD (22 karat typically) that’s been hammered into extraordinarily thin sheets in a process called goldbeating. When you cover something in gold leaf, you are gilding it. Gold leaf is edible, and often used in luxury cuisine.

Gold leafing is just sheets of gold beaten and flattened out until uts thin and paper like. People use it in facial masks and food even, so no it is not toxic.
