Guys chill, Karan Thapar is doing his job of interviewing Shashi Tharoor in an interrogative manner. It doesn't mean he is not aware of the facts or believes the British was good for India. He would make a good defense lawyer perhaps. Just doing his job... Actually any foreigner watching this interview will consider this more credible than an interview conducting by a biased interviewer who only agrees and does not question.

Great debate - grand old Indian style. Shashi has brought a much needed discussion among Indians and very refreshing view points regarding the famine in Bengal to many people who were not aware of such atrocities committed by Sr. Churchill. Fortunately for the people in Kerala (s. India) did not suffer any major famine, during British rule. In-fact the Christians in South Kerala were excused from direct British rule and were ruled thru a puppet Hindu king of Travencore.

It is best for a good interview to avoid questionable current biased view. Glad to see Tharoor teaching slippery Karan who obviously is selective in his interpretation. Karan should learn British Parliamentary Democracy. Democratic ideas were hugely practiced AND understood in India long time back. Giving a name is just playing semantics.

Pertinent questions and brilliant answers. British rule was really an era of darkness. Whether the sun sets on the British soil or not, the British never showed Indians the sun ( the light) during the British colonial rule. It's really extraordinary that they mention Stalin and Mao's killings compared to Britain's 3.5 crore murders in India but they miss out comparing him to Hitler. Hitler killed 60 lakh jews. Churchill killed 40 lakh Indians in 1943 in the Bengal famine while Hitler was killing 60 lakh jews at the same time. The difference in their treatment is massive.

Hey guys violence or non violence. The British had robbed dry the nation over 200 years and it was not economically worth keeping. It was simple business decision. The same goes with other colonies. It is rather disingenuous to suggest Indians were united only because of English. Only a tiny fraction is linked with this and alternatives were in place long time before.

27:45 well I think one could argue that the road to the nonviolent movement of ghandi against British colonization was paved in part by numerous riots and violent instances of resistance in the 19th and 20th century and that instead of ghandi appealing to British morality through his nonviolent movement that it was also a result of British exhaustion with the subcontinent.

I was in Britain for a number of years for my studies but I have noticed even today British historians do not accept India's contribution for the Industrial Revolution or the wealth accumulation or the famines created by the British. If someone raises these issues, they get angry and they say these are Marxist propaganda.
@Pammellam4 жыл бұрын
Dipak Basu ::: I don’t know the details as I am non-British, but I believe most British people have no clue about the monstrosity of the British colonial activities in India. So their arguments are based on ignorance.
@historythatmattersbyboddhi60103 жыл бұрын
Karan Thapar, the British did not leave India due to nonviolence. The declassified British documents speak clearly that the Redfort Trials then subsequent Navy revolt & nation wide protests led to India's Independence. And, British did not unite India, there are historical evidences the in earlier empires also nearly the whole subcontinent was 'administratively' united. British rather did every thing to divide us, like the caste based census, where the legitimized the system.

Mr. Thapar is a very cunning man. He begins his second part with Manmohan's quote knowing very well that Tharoor wont be able to counter it. Looking forward to read the book. But here is a disturbing question for all to consider and ponder over. Its not that these facts were not in public domain. In fact these arguments have always been made by Hindu nationalists. But because they were made by nationalists of a certain ideology, these facts were either neglected or outright denied by the very same Congress darbari leftists. For example, the role of the British in the ossification of the caste system (which has no relation to the jati and varna). Now this is true of the Aryan Invasion Theory as well. All those who counter the theory is conveniently branded as a Sanghi/Bhakt/RSS ideologue. But the facts are out there only if you earnestly look with an open mind. The Congress darbaris/leftists will always deny it for their political ends.
@malayfromindia7 жыл бұрын
Aryan invasion theory is disapprove many years ago, due to big Genome project conducted through all over world after the result come the blood genome is differ from central Asia to Indian subcontinent , though Aryan come from central Asia no actual proof , even none battlefield found by archaeologist, Aryan invasion theory is British creation after they take over all Indian sub continent
@MegaRazzzz6 жыл бұрын
Forget about the Aryan invasion theory. It has been disproved at multiple levels multiple times. What is disturbing is this image the RSS had cultivated of being the only true nationalists in India while at the same time branding anyone siding with the Congress as an anti-national. People don't even know these RSS bastards had been licking British ass since their inception and they staunchly opposed and refused to take part in the freedom movement. Their tendency to lick white ass when it seems that the white man is acting against Muslims is pathetic to say the least. The latest example of this was when the entire world saw Indians doing Pooja and Aarti on Donald Trump's photo when he announced they he will ban Muslims from coming into America! How much of a cretin do you have to be to fall to such levels!?
