That looked like a young adult Bobcat. Fun fact: Mountain Lion is just another name for Cougar, Puma, Panther, Mountain Cat, Mountain Screamer, Painter, Catamount, etc just to name a few. In fact, the cougar has more names than almost any other living mammal, around 40 in English alone. The name they call this large cat simply depends on the location of the country or world you are living in.

Not sure how my algorithm played your channel, but, I used to love hiking. Everyday I’d try to get 8-10 miles w my dog. And then I went through a divorce, had several mental health issues, severe as well, and eventually stopped loving anything I used to love. And your channel came on, and for the first time in months, I wanted to hike. Thank you. I really do mean it. I wanted to share it with you, because you made a difference to help me get out of my mind funk.

Some friendly advice from someone about 3 X your age, who has spent most of his life working and playing in the bush- don't waste time and energy on unnecessary tasks. As example, all that energy you spent sawing firewood could have been better spent collecting firewood, so you don't run out in the night. Good to see you enjoying the outdoors!

Awesome video Madison, as others have said, you are a brave girl, especially with those coyotes, their howls freak me out even when I’m laying in bed (completely safe in my cabin lol), let alone camping and completely exposed. I know they are relatively harmless to people, but the howls are so intimidating, you rock, congrats on being a badass.

Hi Madison. To keep the wood from binding your saw, overhang the log and cut on the overhanging side. The log you cut will be cantilevered, and gravity will open it up as you cut deeper. No binding. Also, it is best to clear the ground bare before making a fire so as not to ignite any organic materials, grass, roots, etc.

Last January I gave myself a birthday gift of a fishing trip to Patagonia, Chile. When traveling from lodge to lodge, I noticed lots of hikers walking the Carretera Austral. Yeah, pot of melted old candles, add half a cup of lamp oil (bought from the store), and dip those small round flat cotton make-up pads - for 2 secs - in the liquid (use tweezers) and lay out on tin foil to dry/cool. In 30 mins you'll have stacks of wax discs that are flat and waterproof. Rip them open and light - they stay lit in windy wet conditions for about 10 mins. ENJOY!

PSA To use dead trees instead of live trees. It’s drier and way better for burning and is essential for self and environmental preservation to be properly practiced. While live trees can be useful in some unique situations, especially when we’re doing it just for the fun, experience and knowledge of it there is truly no need to cut down a live tree for bush craft. Call me a hippie but I had to use dead and some live branches to get my vehicle unstuck from deep snow in the woods and thank the Earth and the tree when I need to take even twigs. Be mindful of the planet throughout all your adventures, part of leave no trace includes causing no harm to the practice of preserving the environment. Awesome video regardless, of course survival experiences, minimal camping and the like is a unique skill everyone should be more inclined to understand and participate in so I’m celebrating your experience and thanks for sharing! ❤️

Looked like a fun adventure, minus the poop and bones! For a good quality camp axe, I’d recommend the Gränsfors Bruk Small Forest Axe. About $220 CAD. Very packable, but effective. And for possible international trips, I would recommend: The Inca Trail in Peru, The Tour of Mount Blanc (TMB: France, Italy, Switzerland) or the Torres del Paine trail in Patagonia, None are as long as the Everest trek, except maybe the TMB, but still good trips. And for a slightly longer trip, the GR11 across the Pyrenees in Spain (800-900 km) is fun ;) Keep the adventures coming and be safe!

Since we are all hiking/camping experts, I'll just say that sleeping on the soft ground is better than on logs. And there is no need to saw and split wood, just put one end of the log in the fire and let it burn. Scoot it farther into the fire when you need to, you can even lay the center in the fire and let it burn in two. Of course, you can place multiple log ends into the fire. Looks fun. Maybe you can go back to Utah and bike out somewhere and make a fifty mile trip or something.

For solo backpacking , I would suggest getting a brown, olive green or camo colored tarp/tent .. dozens of tarp setup videos online to cover the different weather conditions .... I realize conditions here are pretty wet but if going to have a campfire ,, to clear forest floor at least a 6 foot fire area to build your fire ring in ,, and DON"T burn a complete log as an all night fire ... Process all firewood needed and extinguish thoroughly when done with ,, cold to touch ... some of these long logs can stay burning in the middle for days ,, until a forest fire starts ... same with sub-surface tree roots ...

If you don't mind a couple of simple bits of advice from an old experienced outdoors hag..Cut your wood on the free end side of the support..that way the blade doesn't bind in the cut. Never let your fire go out!! Sleeping is when you are at most danger from animals and the fire helps keep them away..and keeps you warm! Essential in sub zero temps when you are cold and slow...and animals are hungry! When learning Bushcraft try to be with someone..preferably someone experienced. It can go wrong very fast. Bloody well done though! You have guts which is so nice to see! 🥰

Nice video! A couple of remarks I would like to add is first off always use a wooden baton to split wood using your knife. Using the poll of an axe or anything metallic for that matter or a rock is not only detrimental to the knife but very dangerous too as it may cause metallic splinters to hit you in the face or, even worse, in the eye. Second, for an overnight like this one the fire to have is a long fire not just a fun looking bone fire. Take care.
