Hey! I wouldn’t recommend reading a book aloud to your kids until you’ve read it yourself. I tried to read the first Harry Potter book to my second graders last year and we ended up abandoning it after the first few chapters. Hagrid does a lot of talking in the beginning and his dialogue is hard for the kids to understand. I suggest reading the magic tree house books to the kids. It’s easy for the kids to get to know the characters and it’s a great combination of fantasy and nonfiction topics.

I taught second grade for almost 30 years. My students always loved the book The Chocolate Touch. I highly recommend you read it to your class. It’s easy to understand and I think the message is great.

I teach 2nd grade and some chapter books that my students have loved are Mercy Watson Thinks Like a Pig (this is a series and it gets them excited about the whole series), Freckle Juice, Magic Tree House. We are currently reading Who Was Milton Hershey? I absolutely love this book because we see how much Hershey endured and how many times he could’ve given up but didn’t.

Stuart Little would be one possibility. When it comes to books, remember that your students are just becoming second graders. They are still in first grade during the first part of the year.Harry Potter and Bridge to Terabithia are more appropriate for upper graders. For short reads, try The Good Egg, The Bad Seed, and The Cool Bean. Peter Pan has higher level vocabulary and your students might not have the attention span for it. Take all of those positive notes from your principal and any drawings from your students and put them on a wall close to your desk whenever you have rough days. Many teachers are feeling run down right now and it feels as if it were April rather than February because of all of the challenges that have been happening with the pandemic. Take care and best wishes to you.

A couple of warnings...Bridge to Terabithia is pretty heavy, especially for second grade. Also, Peter Pan is very odd-quite different from the movie! Lol I did read the kids version to a class one year and they liked it pretty well. Some books/authors I return to year after year...Superfudge series, Beverly Cleary (especially Ramona the Pest, Ramona the Brave, Socks, and The Mouse and the Motorcycle), Wayside School, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, any Magic Tree House that goes along with a unit, and Junie B Jones for a short, funny read.

Yes to The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane! I have been reading that to my students every year since the book came out in 2006.

I wouldn’t recommend starting with bridge to terabithia just because one of the characters dies kind of suddenly and it really affected me when I was young. I started reading Harry Potter when I was six and LOVED it though!

Bridge to Terabithia might be too much for 2nd grade. It deals with death, bullying, crushes, religion/atheism/discussions of hell, etc... I read it to my 5th graders, but would hesitate with anyone younger.

I really like using books that also have movies. We can use the video as an extra learning tool by completing a compare and contrast between the movie and the book.

I would be careful about some of those read alouds, especially for 2nd grade. You’re going to have to do a lot of explaining they storyline and explaining some not so good things to kids who might not be mature enough for it yet. My reading specialist has always said to save the books for discussing during reading groups and read alouds are meant to be very mindless and fun. This has been extremely helpful to me when picking books. The weird school books are awesome for younger grades, Wayside School would be great, Junie B Jones, etc! When you read a book for the first time out loud to kids, you are taking a big gamble! Try to read them to yourself first and see if you think your particular group is mature enough to understand some of the difficult themes and hardships. I hope this helps!! Love watching your stuff 💕

Just found your channel and I'm binging through all of them! Just wondering, all the supplemental materials you buy (bags, crafty bits, candy etc.) Do you use your own money? Or does the school reimburse you? Thanks! 🙂

There are some really inappropriate things in Harry Potter only because it gets very dark my 2nd grader would leave confused and scared.

Here in NY, they read Peter Pan in grade 3 and the students do not get it. I would skip it. I also agree with the other teachers who said no to Harry Potter and Bridge to Terabithia. I use those book in grade 5. I only know one kiddo from grade two that enjoyed Harry Potter as a read aloud. That was read by a parent to her child who was a very high reader and in the gifted program. Good luck!

Harry Potter may be too advanced for 2nd graders. I just finished reading it to my fifth graders and I feel like it was better suited for that age group. Also, there may be too many options to give them that would make them overwhelmed, I would may only give them 3-4 options at s time
