David ("Time Bandits" & Frestonia Minister of the Arts) Rappaport introducing Madness at the 1983 Brockwell Park CND free festival. "It Must Be Love" with the band not overly worried being pelted with mud by British Movement.

I was one of those Madness fans. We marched from the Embankment to Brixton but by the time we got into Brockwell park Hazel O’Connor was already on stage. I remember the mud we had quite a bit on us when we left that evening.

I was there. It took ages to get down from Rochdale in a terrible old coach, we were actually stuck in a traffic jam next to Clint Eastwood and General Saint!

I was backstage at this, as one of the organisers. This was right at the end of the day, with most of the mud, mayhem and mischief caused by Damned fans who had missed part of that band's set. We had a tight schedule and all the bands had to finish by a certain time or the council would cut off the power. I feel sorry for Suggs and the band as they didn't deserve those idiots at the front. There were plenty of Madness fans further back in the crowd, Madness were headlining. But the band played on and I love them for that.

Chris Dalton - I was there too. It was an out of control gig until Madness came on and calmed things down with their set appealing to all comers.

Chris, I remember the Damned couldn't make it so Madness stayed on stage and played on... the loons started mud slinging because Damned weren't gonna show.

@@junglist3739 the Damned played, but earlier, as the second band on. The problem was that many of their fans arrived after their set... And they couldn't come back on.

@@chris.dalton thanks for clearing that up... I was in the march and protesting prior to getting there so must have missed them as you say. I seem to remember an announcement that Damned weren't coming on which sent the weirdos into a frenzy. But as a 16 year old I loved my first ever concert and Hazel O'Connor and Madness were magic.

I forgot madness performed with the string quartet at this gig. They were at their peak commercially & live in 1983.

At 2:01 does Suggs really say "F*ck off you c*nts"? This is a great clip!

I have to admit I'd forgotten Dave's mention of the loathsome BM. Perhaps I was too busy trying to get a decent photo of the band. But, I do remember a lot of mud and can slinging. And of course, Peel's deadpan "John Peel's a cunt, wow that's original".

You guys have plenty of stories. I'm not being sarcastic. It's unusual to find such a high number of KZbin comments from people who were actually there. So as far as I can work this out : You had a long walk, it was rainy, lots of people were late, you all got muddy, but the British Movement worked their way to the front throwing mud, so Madness persevered but did leave early?
