Iroha’s design may be based on an assassin. Throughout the story, she basically goes on a wild goose chase looking for Ui, with only her memories as proof. She silences any thing that might disprove UI’s existence. That which also fits her weapons, a knife and a crossbow, weapons that are easy to hide and silently take down opponents. Cuckoo’s are also terrible parents, leaving their eggs in nests of other birds. Iroha would no doubt feel awful about forgetting Ui and being helpless to help her. She left Ui in another nest, the hospital for the nurse to take care of her. The hat that Yachiyo dons is most likely a hat a mourner would wear, fitting her mourning of her lost friends. The lantern is most likely symbolic of Yachiyo thinking that she kill is anyone close to her to survive. Lanterns are to guide people to safety but the Doppel’s animation causes a storm and tsunami, like how Yachiyo drew people close but then killed them. Mifuyu’s design is mainly composed of greys, referring to being “morally grey” and being inoffensive and being indecisive. The fluff on her outfit might be referring to sheep, which reflects her wish to be free in her dreams with sheep being associated with sleep. With her doppel materializing from her tongue, this refers to Mifuyu’s charismatic nature and her feeling like she has no voice in her family. Geese are also incredibly loyal to each other like how Mifuyu inspires loyalty in new Magius members. Kuroe’s design is meant to be a reflection of Iroha, because she wanted to be like her, but wasn’t able to. Her design could also be another reflection of an assassin. Assassins, in order to get close to a target can either sink into the shadows (Becoming a witch) or can lie and get close to them (Kuroe feelings on her wish). Ichizo seems to have arms but no hands, possibly referring to Kuroe’s helplessness and self proclaimed pathetic nature.

Not fully related but- If you look at Iroha's design and then to the wings of magias uniform there's obvious similarities It can be assumed this was intentional when you consider the original purpose of UI, Nemu and Touka's wishes. To save Iroha After UI was erased and their connection to Iroha was cut that desire to save transferred to magical girls as a whole yet the cape persists. Possibly hinting at the idea that Touka, even after forgetting her, still wanted to save Iroha and now associates that familiarity with that design. Even when she forgot her, she still wanted to save her big sister

Something to note about doppels is that the older the girl, the more closely fused they tend to be to their doppels. Yachiyo and Mifuyu's doppels sprout from multiple parts of their bodies; Yachiyo's being her hands, ribs, left leg and scalp, and Mifuyu's being her tongue and hands. Magia Record introduced a new rule that magical girls' powers become weaker as they age, as they tend to be less emotional (as their power derives from their emotions) and are more likely to die in battle or succumbing to witchhood. The more fused a girl is to her doppel, the closer they are to being a witch, making sure every girl has an expiration date.

Campanella's "ticket puncher" design may also be tied to the phrase "getting your ticket punched" which can either mean "to die" or "to advance in status or experience" depending on the context. I feel like the first one fits yachio the best. Her previous team all died or witched out, In effect "having their tickets punched" and yachio's survivor guilt means she feels like she was the one who punched their tickets.

11:31 I actually see her outfit as pajamas or loungewear. Everything is so fluffy and comfortable and she did wish to "be free in her dreams". This also connects her to the night and by extension the moon. Thus, a crescent-shaped weapon makes sense. Same goes for her owl themes. Thus, her overall themes are the night, sleep, and dreams.

A few things about Koroe's doople I want to mention : -It's completly black and has a yellow beak, it ressembels a baby cuckoo bird, and in the anime make a point to explain she doesn't feel like a 'true' magical girl like Iroha and struggle with Iroha's view of being hopefull views, it kind of shows she fells like an Impostor and shouldn't be a magical girl, like a cuckoo present as as another's bird baby to be feed. -The only 'human' part are a torse without hands, goes witht he 'helpless incapabable magical girl' theme - She's doesn't really seems to be flying, but just stading on a podium - in her witch lair she's following a bright light, it might just show she was trying to follow in Iroha's path, but never capable of doing so. But also tie to the stories mentioned.

Yeah the power thing does makes sense for Kuroe in the anime. She doesn't seem to be actually Iroha's best friend. Iroha only tries saves her because she was influenced of Kuroe's powers. This made more sense in that scene when Iroha attempted to boost Kuroe's morale only for it to backfire by making Kuroe to feel more miserable, further inducing her with transformation. It's because when Kuroe witness Irpha tryoing to save her and cheer her up, she just realized that all of it are probably "fake" because she was just unintentionally using her powers on her.

Exactly, Kuroe just unncounsly seeks atention with her power, we can even see that on the intro of Season 2 as she is in the center of the group and is seeing by every other main character at the end while in reality, she was just a side character that no one truly knows. We can see that at the end with the silouettes of the other characters she isn't near Iroha or the others, she is just aside Rena and Kaede, almost blending with the dark backgrond and far from the protagonism. Even as a witch she still seeks atention, she is pretending to fly to a star she can't reach, while everything in her backround seems as a beautiful star night she is an "ugly mud bird", but even she is still the most outstanding element in her barrier since she "can't be like other stars and is just a black star". And as far as Kuroe being Iroha's former best friend that's a lie too. We just saw them meet in episode 1. They barely know each other, Iroha's best friends were first Ui, Touka and Nemu, and then Yachiyo, Tsuruno, Sana, Felicia and MoReKa' Team (Momoko, Rena and Kaede).

14:33 actually Kuroe's power makes sense, since it reflects something about her personality in her wish, she desperly wants attention (in that case that boy's attention) but when she gets that attention she either ends up acting mean towards those she wanted that attention from or just starts to evade them ot evade her responsabilities, and that's why her nature as a witch/doppel is escapism. She wants to avoid those who are affected by her magic. Kuroe did this with her mother, her boyfriend and even Iroha, they cared about her and she just put them aside. This would also explain why Iroha seems to forget completly about Kuroe when she isn't around, as she is being affected by Kuroe's magic and she truly doesn't care about Kuroe, but is just being affected by her magic. Also we can see Kuroe's magic in the second opening (mainly the blue-ray one), as she is along side Iroha and Mikazuki Villa being in the center of everything and watched by the other main characters althought this isn't her story at all, it's theirs. Is funny if you think about it, since it seems her power even affects people outside the show since she clearly draws attention to the fans (althought is done through victimizing her).

13:34 Kuroe wasn't Iroha previous best friend, they barely met just once when they fought the same witch (in the first episode we saw when they just met and the day afterwards with both talking in the train). Iroha just really liked Kuroe after seeing her just twice (for some reason). Actually before knowing Mikazuki Villa (her team) Iroha didn't had true friends at all, just Ui, Touka and Nemu, she even says this in the game. It's even hinted in her game units that Kuroe has so much envy of Iroha because "both are similar" (they aren't tbh) but she can't be like her and that she actually hates her and wants Iroha to be death (in her swimsuit she is seen happy hinting that she drowned Iroha).

In Kuroe's Mizugi (Swimsuit) unit, it is hinted that Kuroe's happiness shown after her transformation is because she drowned Iroha (who actually can't swim and that's why she uses a Kyubey floater in her Swimsuit unit). In Kuroe's Swimsuit transformation she is taken by Iroha to the ocean, Kuroe seems unconfortable at first but after a big wave (that transformes Kuroe in magical Swimsuit outfit) Iroha is gone, just with her Kyubey floater around the water and Kuroe ends up her transformation and smiles to the camera. To my at least, it seems Kuroe deeply wants Iroha to die because of the envy she has towards her and in that transformation (probably inside her head) she drowns Iroha.

Iroha really liked kuroe immedeately because of her power. To "affirm her own existance" aka the same power that made her ex really like her and why she felt guilty about that fake relationship. And i guess that power is a passive aura that affects everyone around her. Kuroe also admires Iroha so in the last scenes of her and Iroha before she turns into a witch, when Iroha tries to give Kuroe hope, it didnt work cause Kuroe knows it's just her power.

This is something that I noticed, but I think that iroha is a combination between homera and madoka design wise. With a pink black and white in her design. And iroha has a similar silhouette to homera when she takes the cape off. Plus her weapon is on her wrist similar to homera And it being a bow like madoka. Also her hair is pink like madoka’s and it’s straight like homera plus she has braids like homera had in the past. (And I know it’s a stretch) but her reversing the effects of peoples body’s in order to slow down is similar to time travel.

She kinda is like a combination of Madoka and Homura. Althought design wise she is like Madoka, in theory she has more in common with Homura on her journey (althought has a more Madoka attitude at times). And also yes, her ability seems to be a combination of both Homura and Madoka's powers too. Before knowing her true power, even some fans said as joke that Iroha was kinda like Madoka and Homura's "daughter" (althought she is older than them). Iroha's Healing Reversion power is similar to Mallory from AHS, so she also has some kind of "Time" Magic in her.

Something I noticed about Giovanna is that her face/beak looks like a plague doctor mask to me. Even Giovanna’s coat/cloak resembles the cloaks that plague doctors would wear. This plague doctor theme could be a warped version of Iroha’s healing ability. Since plague doctors never actually knew how to cure the Black Death, the plague doctor stuff might be referencing the fact Iroha doesn’t technically heal people, she just reverses their physical condition.

For Candy. I actually have a theory on who her magical girl could be. Let me introduce Rion Yuzuki. First, let’s take a look at her bio for a sec. It says “A magical girl with an extreme sister complex, she is incredibly possessive of her older twin sister. She treats anyone who approaches her sister as a nuisance. Her jealousy is what causes all of her anger. Even though she loves her sister so far, her expressions of love have become twisted, which leaves her running in circles. She worries that her older sister doesn't reciprocate her feelings.” It fit’s candies description very well. On top of that, look at her design on the magia wiki. It looks kinda what I think Candy would wear as a magical girl ( kinda). Lastly look at this quote from her memoria card. “The dolls listen to everything I say. They don’t complain, don’t oppose me, and of course they’re never suddenly disagreeable. They put on the clothes I choose, and I attach the accessories I choose.I wish everything could be the way I want.” I think that she became a witch when, ( spoiler warning for those who have not played the game.) Her sister Hotori died a second time. (Or maybe something involving her sister.) And it caused her to become a witch.

Probably not super significant (for the theory and symbology you bring up in this video), but Iroha is similar to the Japanese word for color. Its her last name, Tamaki, that means ring. I wasn't aware of the parallels to the Galactic Railroad. Pretty cool to learn what very likely influenced the character/doppel designs.

Also i think campanella also references yachio's view of herself as a magical girl. Campanella unlike most seen doppels has much darker colour scheme and the black hat with veil is also funeral wear, which makes sense considering she has constantly seen people around her die and even thought that her wish was why she got others killed as she thought her ability was to survive on other's expense. Also the scorpion also plays into this as she sees herself as this dangerous animal that must drive others away to not hurt them.

You're pronouncement of Iroha hurts me so much It's "Eee-ro-ha" not "Aye-ro-ha" XD Otherwise, excellent video! Love seeing you talk more about PMMM. It's interesting how I do _like_ Magia Record, but it doesn't quite _click_ with me 100%. I think it's mostly because of how it raises so many questions about the worldbuilding, the overwhelming number of characters, and Homura's jaunts through time, but I'm not also wondering if it's compounded by the inspiration. I didn't know about Night on the Galactic Railroad before this video, and I think having a strong concept of Faust made the original so much easier to digest for a westerner like me. All the same, it's good to see the level of thought put into the original series is still on full display here. Magia Record felt like an unnecessary spin-off to me when it released, a Gacha-tie-in promotional series, but the writers really made it work well after I gave it a second chance, even with my gripes. Definitely noticed the bird theme going on but you really put it all together. Great vid!

Just wanted to point out something about Yachiho's dopple: the hat might be a refference to the book, yes, but the hat is black with a black veil, what is very comon to represent WIDOWS. And makes total sense to me that Yachiho's witch form woukd have elements of a widow, cause that's exactly what seems to trigger her the most: the lost of her friends in exchange of her survival. The entire plot og Yachiho is about that.

Her symbolism is to be a representation of victimists and self-sabotage. She wants to change and "be better" not because she wants to improve, but because she seeks attention and aproval from others. Deep down Kuroe doesn't care for anyone but herself and actually doesn't want to change, thus she is embarrased by this, so she just wants to avoid the consecuences of her actions, thus her nature as Ichizo is "Escape" as she is constantly running away while at the same time wishes to be "a star that can be seen by others".

Gonna make a commentary on some parts of the video to add my own interpretation to your works: Iroha - Beyond the "keeping your magical girl activity" a secret (which is a given to all magical girls), I think the rogue theme do work for Iroha because she's a shy and quiet character (at the beginning of the story that is), and it's even more fitting when you consider that Iroha, in the anime, has her hood on at the beginning, but then she no longer has it on when she gains confidence and determination. It also works well with her whole thematic of her Doppel who hides what Iroha doesn't want to see or is too afraid to acknowledge (which plays a big role in the last few episodes of the anime and even in some bits of the gacha game), like when she was looking for Ui, she never thought about her potentially being dead, or even completely denies the possibility of her being a fake memory implanted in her mind like Mitama said. Yachiyo - There's also a tie to the tale "The Scorpion and the Frog" that could be made with Yachiyo, not only because of her Doppel but also because of her beliefs that her wish was the cause of Mel and Kanae's death, even though she never meant it (like the Scorpion who killed the frog halfway into the pond despite promising he wouldn't, and even though he knew it'll doom them both, because it was in its nature to sting). I'm also surprised you didn't mentioned Yachiyo's witch silhouette we see in the anime, when Iroha explained what she was dreaming about when stuck in her Doppel World before Yachiyo and Kuroe came to the rescue. Mifuyu - I like to believe that her outfit, or her "vest" at least, represent a sort of pyjamas clothing, like it's very comfortable and fluffy, and she doesn't wear much beneath it. The sugar geese being "sugar" could also ties with her indulging herself in her dreams where she's free from everything (in theory), with the whole "sweet dreams", "sugarcoating things" and all that. Kuroe - Ok I have some stuff to say because I feel like a few details were missed: 1) Her inherent ability is "Affirmation of Existence", which is said to attract the attention of those around her. The building wall powers only seems to be a second power she develops like how Kyoko develops her own powers after she lost her inherent magic. I also believe there's no real differences between anime and gacha magic, because the Mami, Kyoko and Sayaka all keep their skills and such in any depiction, with no differences from one another. 2) [This interpretation is only based on what I've seen from the anime and not the gacha] While I do agree with Kuroe's characterization, I do believe she doesn't fail at saving people, but her whole reason for being/feeling weak and depressed is because she feels like she fails as being a magical girl. For example: she choose not to help Kuro in the anime and leaves her like that, and we don't even know if she died or witched out. She joined the Wings of Magius for magical girls to be saved ... but soon betrays them when she finds Iroha. What ultimately strike her down is how miserable she feels as a magical girl because of the repeated failures she went trought, and that's why even with Iroha's speech, she witches out (and it's even the last push up to her downfall): she's tired of being a failure of a magical girl that cannot save and must be constantly saved by someone.

Kuroe didn't loose her magical power of Affirmation of Existence, she still keeps that power in the whole show. That's why Nemu chooses her to look for Iroha from all those black feathers and that's why Iroha looses interest in Ui, Touka and Nemu while Kuroe is around her, she basiclly makes people focus just on her and forget about others while she is literally no one to them (again, she and Iroha weren't friends they just talked twice before meeting again). Also this might explain why she is forgotten when she isn't around, since people only seem to acknowledge her when she is seen because her magic is making people minds focus on her.

Fun(Or.... Actually not Fun) Fact : If you see Kuroe's witch Ichizo, it's like she is flying up to the bright blue star. It represents Iroha, the brightest star Kuroe wanted to be. Unfortunately, as you know that the witches can't achieve their desire in their barrier, Ichizo could never reach up to that flashing star. P.S : To let Kuroe rest in peace, Iroha uses her magic to make a dagger to defeat Ichizo Kuroe. During that scene, the dagger also flashes brightly like a star, which directly represents that Iroha is the brighest star Kuroe was admiring. Seriously Kuroe doesn't deserve this ending.....

Thankfully, the game went on with its own take on Kuroe where she's able to find that hope she used to have. I think my problem with Kuroe (and this is a problem with the anime's handling of the characters in general), is that she's not exactly a character on her own and comes off more like a plot device for Iroha's narrative. And I'm glad the game fleshes out Kuroe way more, like her MGS giving us her full backstory for the anime, including her first meeting with Iroha. The Little Bird's Star event giving us her game scenario where she never met Iroha until way after joining the Wings of Magius. And they're all so well-written and really gives Kuroe's character the exploration it really needed.

The doppel taking over is only a side-effect in the anime. In the game, the girls who overuse their doppel tend to lose the use of their legs.

Man, Yachiyo is my favorite character in the entire series. Her development in both game and anime is really good. I think Final Season dropped the ball on her a little though...It didn't make sense for her to leave Mifuyu behind like that. And Kuroe's tragedy was that she could have been saved if only she had met Iroha at a different time. And I like how the game went with this and gave Kuroe a different path to grow into.

I seen awhile ago a theory that the reason Irohas Doppel wants to hide from reality is because it doesn’t want to the face the reality of being a magical girl, aka the death and suffering that comes along with being a magical girl and that’s why Spoiler warning: kuroes death was so important. Because it made her have to face the reality that being a magical girl isn’t as good as she wants it to be. The theory also tied some things related to this back to ui but I’m just summarizing.

I really appreciated this because I had no idea that the witches/doppels had this much thought put into them this time around. I feel the witches in Madoka Magica have kind of been talked about at nauseum tbh so I was really fascinated to learn the intent behind these ones. I also thought Kuroe was a pointless character but now I see a lot more love was put into her than I thought

Tbh Kuroe was kinda pointless and a waste of character (mainly in screentime, the other characters that were cut had more much deept). She was just made by InuCurry to get killed and to be victimized. Althought it's interesting to see references and symbolism to her victimistic nature. 😅

Actually, Ume designed Iroha without knowing she was going to be the main focused character (they just asked her to design most of the important characters but she didn't know who was the main character), but after knowing Iroha was going to be the main character she changed her weapon (originally she designed Iroha with a dagger as a weapon, in the game she doesn't have that weapon).

If you want to experience the madoka magica portable game there is a translation that is around 80% done and is expected to be finished this summer, the gameplay is not very good but there is a theme of bond forming between all the members of the quintet and you go on little dates in between labyrinths to make their affection go up and it’s really cute and neat. If u don’t have a psvita there it is also possible to emulate it
