The video paid homage to A. Warhol and The Factory . Many famous guests: Sofia Coppola, Udo Kier ( sex book also) S. Stein ( who signed her first contract with Madonna at Warner in 83), D. Mazar, etc. And the middle photo shoot is from the session from Vogue 92 spread 🤩

The house beat is overwhelming, but how much sadness is there behind the smiles on that dance floor? She managed to capture all the charm but also the squalor of Los Angeles. Doing a Google search on the director of the video Bobby Woods, the notes written by Madonna come up in which she describes the scenes and the general mood. Not only did she already have everything in her head but she was able to surround herself with the right people to collaborate with to achieve what she wanted. Both this video and "Bad girl" are inspired by the movie "Looking for Mister Goodbar". Madonna must have been very impressed by the protagonist of the film (the extraordinary Diane Keaton), a woman from the 70s who experiences all the contradictions of a Catholic education that clashes with a strong push for emancipation. It is a film that I recommend you see even if it is very harsh. Thanks for this interesting reaction and "Girlie show" version for sure!

She literally made me want to understand the meaning of every song that exists, and Madonna is the perfect example of that. It sounds good, but there is realistic concept. The end of the balloons represents that you lose your innocence the deeper you search the more you find, nothing endless in the world Madonna really did a great job with Erotica, 31 years later and it is still a bible 🎉❤

This was the second Erotica single. Much more radio friendly than the title track but she still made it weird with the video haha released at the height of the Madonna backlash the media created after the Erotica video. Deeper and Deeper is a fan favorite and even though Madonna faced alot of negativity at the time, the song went top 10 in most markets, #7 in the US. You will see the album is alot more diverse and deep than just the title and first single suggest. Your analysis of the video is spot on, i also think the balloons represent thr loss of innocence. You are also in for a treat with the third single and video. I absolutely cannot wait for your analysis of that video, because that's definitely a complex one. Probably my favorite one from her ever. All the Erotica singles and videos are so artistic imo. The album was criminally underrated at the time but thankfully people have come around and appreciate it for what it is now.

What a great review! I think Brenda really nails it. And that’s why I know many people who have used this as a coming out song! 😉 The video itself pays homage to Andy Warhol. She performs the hell out of this live at the Girlie Show! Studio 54 segment begins with a disco ball 🪩 If you’re going to review a live performance of this, I don’t know of anything that’s not part of a tour. She smashes this at the Rebel Heart tour. And an interesting performance at the Reinvention tour. Can’t wait for the next review! I’m going to predict that your favourite song will be Rain! The Erotica album got lost in the controversy over the Sex book at the time. So little attention paid to the creativity of the work. I remember one friend criticizing the inclusion of some of the Vogue lyrics but Madonna has done that throughout her body of work, I think it’s a way of connecting her wide variety of genres. I remember having to keep rewinding it when I had it on cassette 🙈 Erotica is such an amazing album but unfortunately it didn’t get the credit it deserved 😢 It still amazes me how in between filming A League of Their Own, she would run to her trailer to write songs for the Erotica album!! Another great reaction! Her good friend for over 40 years, the actress Debi Mazar is in this video, (she’s the brunette who blows the kiss in the room scene with the bananas). She makes appearances in other Madonna videos such as Papa don’t preach, True Blue, Justify my Love and Music. I like very much this video because I think says a lot about the early Madonna's times in NYC and how she became the Madonna we know The video describes the time when Madonna went to NYC, she was in clubs, asking the DJs to play her music, meeting people like Warhol and the factory, Joe D'allessandro, Warhol's fetish actor, and a lot of interesting people who influenced her For me the ballons represented what Udo Kier say at the beginning: the idols and demons, and when at the end of the video she got free of them, she became the Madonna we know, without the demons she is free, no fear, and without the idols, as artist, she can express herself, not imitating her idols or trying to be another, being and expressing herself totally free

This video had also a cut version where the banana eating was not included. Eagle eye viewers can also spot differences with Like a Virgin video where the panting of the lion is cut. It’s interesting how certain things can stay and others not. For example in Papa Don’t Preach you can clearly see Madonna’s breast popping out from her bustier in the dance sequence but somehow that got through. Go figure! Thanks for all the reactions. Your insight gave me a different interpretation of this song. It is about acceptance of yourself to fully love despite of what you’ve been told. Romance is not dead. I also love her inclusions of previous lyrics. To Vogue. You got to let yourself move to the music. You got to just let yourself go with the flow. Spotlight has a reference to Lucky Star, Causing a Commotion has a reference to Into the Groove. On Madame X, Crazy has a reference to Like a Prayer and Future has a reference to Don’t Tell Me.

This was the last song finished off erotica. Madonna and Shep Pettibone, producer of the album, we’re having a hard time coming up with a good bridge. The. Madonna says she wants a flamenco guitar interlude and Shep says “I can’t add La Isla Bonita in here!” but Madonna was insistent and got her guitar solo. Shep hated it. Madonna, just to tease him, never played that solo for the past 23 years in her concerts 😂. Anyway, I love your interpretation of the video, you not only got the message but brought some very interesting insights regarding the meaning of the balloons. This is a topic that has been debated among Madonna fans for decades and each time we understand it a little better. Now, did you spot the celebrity cameos in the video? 😊

I think it would be interesting for u to also know that the video was inspired by Andy Warhol and Paul morrisey underground movies and it was a sort of homage to the stars of the factory at the time and the whole nyc studio 54 scene in the 70’s. You can actually see some of them appearing in the video such as holly Woodlawn and hudo kier who were some of the few who were still alive at the time they filmed this. I love this video and the whole erotica era. I think it’s the most artistic one and all the references she put in her works are amazing and show how she knows her story, the story of her city and the greatest artists who came before. I see this album/book/tour as an homage to them who are not with us anymore. Thanks for your videos you guys are so sweet xxx

I love this song, as in general, all of songs of the Erotica album. I also don't know much about the meaning of the video. It's too complex to understand it as it seems there's no official explanation of it. Some said the balloons are the innocence, that it's lost. But don't know what it means all the dark stuff of the video, cause it seems that there's a satanic cult in the basement of that disco haha. Don't know what represents also that man that says all that about the demons, etc. and the fact that Madonna it's like adores him. Anyway, although i don't understand much the plot of the video, it's very interesting cause of the story it shows. Loved your reaction 😍😍😍
