I still don’t care what anyone say’s, I think this was a terrific James Bond theme song, it was modern and ahead of it’s time, and not a power ballad like all the rest. Not to mention, the video is awesome, and it was fun Madonna had a cameo in the film as well. I do think Madonna in the late 80’s, early 90’s, would have made a great female action star.She was offered the Cat Woman role in Bateman Returns, and sadly turned it down as well as the role of Trinity in The Matrix. Either, I think she would have excelled in.😊

Entering Madonna's darker era, which in reality also was a dark period after 9/11. Her American Life album is something special, produced solely by Mirwais, experimental and profound. Not really a commercial success, but a very much loved album by hardcore Madonna fans like me. Can't wait for that!

For context, Madonna played a small cameo in this movie as a fencing instructor, so that explains partially the fencing in the video. She was very motivated with the concept of “destroying the ego”, which was one of the first learnings she had once she became a Kabbalist. Her tattoo and the symbol that appears on the chair mean one of the 72 names of God. In Kabbalah they explain that Moses used these three words to part the Red Sea and we can use these words to create miracles of our own. In this video the names mean “destruction of the ego”. We are going to see this again during the Re-Invention tour but I’m a different song.

Hi Both, watching you see the video for the first time was just how I felt watching it. I’d never seen “action Madonna” as you brilliantly put it. I used to love the bond franchise and there are so many clever references to the films over the years. The knife in the shoe, the bowler hat as a weapon, the cat, the Ursula costume. This song was heavily criticized as being unlike other James Bond themes. I suppose, after many ballads, they forgot about Duran Duran, and the Beatles. 😆 Personally, I love it. Great video as well. She actually plays a Fencing instructor in the movie, so that is reflected in the video. But she’s not fighting with herself, the white versus black fencers represent good versus evil. You’ll notice that the tortured Madonna also receives the same wounds inflicted in the battle between good versus evil. Great review ladies! Have a great day! ♥️

Amazing video. Loved how it veered away from what is the standard of ‘Bond’ theme songs. This was fresh and different (and still stands the test of time). You should watch this bond movie. Madonna makes a cameo in it, and also unlike other theme song video clips, that show images of the film in the background, Madonna to a degree almost re-enact scenes of the movie herself (how Mr. Bond is tortured in the film) etc in this video clip. I thought that was smart and different. It is the queen after all, so can only expect the best. I believe there is also a ‘making of’ the film clip online I remember watching at the time. The black things she straps on her arm are called tefillin. Used in the Jewish faith, these leather straps have a set of small boxes on them containing verses from the Torah and are worn for prayer. She also angled for a cameo in the movie. She plays a fencing instructor named Verity with great hair and lots of innuendo 😊

Love this James Bond opening song. I believe it is the best of Pierce Brosnan's Bond songs of the four movies he made; although the film overall is not his best outing. Madonna appears in the film in a scene with Brosnan. As you seem to enjoy Madonna in action mode, she does it again in the uncensored version of the video for American Life (which was finally released officially last year) which Madonna withdrew in 2003 in sensitivity to the Iraq war and replaced with a sanitized video. With this video, this amazing journey has now entered the American Life era where she’d critique America’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan post 9/11 and express her unhappiness after achieving “success” within the superficial celeb culture of “Hollywood” and her turning to spirituality to survive this turbulent period. This is in contrast to her nostalgic and patriotic sentiments in American Pie from her previous Music era. In this video of the song she co/wrote with Mirwais Ahmadzai for the 2002 James Bond film, she adapted the plot from the movie where she now assumed the situation where in the film, Bond was captured by North Korean agents and tortured in prison after being betrayed by a female spy agent from his own MI-6 organization. She also evoked her cameo role in the film as Bond’s fencing instructor, Verity, and the action-packed sequences is typical in a Bond movie. But leave it to Madonna’s creative genius, she decided to infuse the video narrative with psycho-analytic spiritual themes she learned from her then deep study of post-modern Kabbalah version of Jewish mysticism. The action sequences represented her inner struggle to “destroy” her old ego (the black clad Madonna) that’s the source and cause of disappointment, emotional pain “to allow the divine ego to manifest itself” (the white-clad Madonna) and to rediscover true inner joy and fulfillment. Near the end, she wrapped her left arm with tefillin or phylacteries-black leather straps traditionally worn by devout male Jews during religious rituals/prayers or while studying sacred texts of Judaism-in ancient Jewish history it was a form of amulet or talisman worn in times of peril. Then her executioners discovered she had miraculously escaped death in the electric chair, which showed instead in the chair, burnt, glowing Jewish letters Lamed, Aleph, Vav or LAV-the Hebrew transliteration of the English word “LOVE” which letters she had also tattooed in her right arm. But it also represented in ancient Judaism one of the 72 names of “GOD”. Some Jewish scholars also interpreted the letters to mean “NO” with some even assuming that Madonna was advocating “No” to capital punishment. Of course, some orthodox Jews objected to her use of these religious texts and objects as “sacrilegious”, she being female and a Gentile (the Kabbalah Center does not require its members to convert to Judaism i.e. become a Jew). I think her escape is also a metaphor for the adage-“One who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day..”. It’s fascinating she included this song in her recent Celebration Tour which recalled her surviving a near-death-experience from a serious illness prior to launching the tour. Finally, the video cost $6.1mil (or $10.33mil adjusted to 2023 inflation rate) to produce, making it the 2nd most expensive mv ever made which again validates Madonna’s belief that great art is priceless. Madonna wanted to bring someone with her to write her dialogue for her Die Another Day cameo. They suggested that it should be her delivering the famous line ‘My name is Bond, James Bond’ but in this case Madonna didn’t win the argument. According to Rosamund Pike, Madonna was ‘dead professional and quite fun really and I guess quite nervous’.

Madonna had a cameo role in the 007 Film of the same name where she plays a fencing instructor. So the fencing scenes in the music video are referencing that. She unfairly was nominated for another Razzie award for this role alongside her "Swept Away" starring role (directed by then husband Guy). The song itself has new meaning now especially after her near-death experience last year for sure. Looking forward to your reaction to her next music video; "American Life". There is a director's cut version (the original full vision for the project) which she eventually released on her own channel a few years ago. She initially pulled this version as the War in Iraq began in 2003. Please check this version out rather, the one which initially aired heavily, I mean heavily cuts out all the imagery apart from the one shot of her singing in front of flags, hell it's not even worth seeing or you could react to both at once, the tame and followed by directors cut.

Action Madonna :) .. interesting fact : she had a role in the MATRIX movie but she turned it down ..tiny regret there from her side - however she was releasing the album ‘Ray of light’ and doing promotional stuff for the record almost at the same time as matrix was filming also the album ‘music’ was forming as well and she was also filming / getting ready for filming ‘the next best thing’ movie so timing issues were absolutely real. I think if she’s isn’t as busy she would have done the matrix. But she was just too busy with her projects which is great too as this period in Madonna’s career is very lucrative :) xx god bless the Queen xx

Ladies, may I please suggest that you react to all 3 American Life music videos next, perhaps all in one video? 1. The so-called Bush version - this version was only released in Europe and was a version that Madonna herself chose as the official video to be sent to music channells 2. The so-called flag version - rush-released in the USA and then Europe after the backlash of the Bush-version, the flag version is arguably the worst Madonna MV ever 3. The director's cut - very similar to the Bush version but way too violent and not so smooth if it comes to editing and with a completely different ending.
