I think one of the most important things for context is to remember that this album was released at the height of the AIDS epidemic. For many of us who lived through that time, this album was something of a lifeline when the vast majority of celebrities/pop stars/actors turned their back or were distancing themselves from anything associated with gay men. The lyrical content and that deep house and R&B sound mixed with jazz influences was such a brave move and really proved her willingness to take artistic risks. Great reaction it’s always interesting to see what songs resonate with you. I was surprised you enjoyed Deeper and Deeper so much as it’s the one disco themed song and I have to say for me the title track is an absolute work of art. I also wasn’t a huge fan of Fever until I saw it performed in concert and that kinda changed everything.

Very true. It really can't be understated how important Madonna was to the male gay community during the epidemic. Even from her earliest days on the club scene in New York - and throughout the worst days of the epidemic - it was clear she was a committed ally. The reason it was clear is that she didn't just care about us and speak out on our behalf, but actually experienced a lot of what we were going through. Her deep immersion in gay culture from the minute she hit NYC meant that she understood and cared about us in a way that no other famous person - pop icon or otherwise - ever had before. With this sensational album (her best imo), she documented for posterity that commitment to and understanding of our community. Throughout those dark days and beyond, it hasn't just been that she's spotlighted and supported our fight, but most importantly, she's celebrated us through her music (and some damned good music at that!). It's the primary reason why some (cough cough) older gay male fans like myself will never turn our back on her. (But please M, don't turn out to be a serial killer...we do draw the line :).
@Pfink Жыл бұрын
Not her easiest album, and definitely not as commercial as her previous work. She was going for a gritty, dirty kind of sound that combined the heavy bottom of house music and elements of hip hop and new jack swing. To achieve that, she and her collaborators Shep Pettibone and André Betts decided not to overproduce the songs, because she wanted them to sound raw. Her vocals are mostly the original demo vocals, that's why they sound kind of unpolished and muffled, which was a very deliberate decision. To me it's one of her most atmospheric albums, and definitely a grower. It's about sex, yes, but not sexy pretty sex. It's about scary weird sex, fear, loneliness, betrayal, loss, self-destruction and self-discovery. It's a shame the music was completely overlooked at the time because of the book hysteria, but it was an album ahead of its time in a lot of ways. Gladly we can now appreciate it for the masterpiece it really is.

It was a terrible mindset to grow with. My exploration was so limited by this. Nowadays, young fellas don’t get the impact and trauma of it. @@taintedlife2618 she is talking about her dance teacher who she took classes with when she was a teenager. He took her to gay clubs and she said he was the first person to tell her she was beautiful. He was also instrumental in her moving to New York to study dance. He basically saw something incredible in her and told her she had grown out of Detroit and needed to make something of her self. His name was Christopher Flynn. The song also references Martin Burgoyne who she was best friends with in the early NYC days and also when she was signed. He found out he had AIDS and checked himself into hospital but told no one, he just disappeared. Eventually one of his friends found him and he had days to live. The friend called Christopher Ciccone and he called M. She made sure he got moved to a private hospital with everything they could give him to make him comfortable including a dedicated 24 hour nurse and doctor. She camped out at the hospital sleeping with him in his bed until he passed. It only came out recently that after she spent time in the hospital and saw that these poor dying men had been abandoned their families that she would turn up with no entourage and speak to them and hold their hands and try and give them some comfort. That is why apparently she was so dedicated to raising money and awareness about HIV and AIDS.

Hi and welcome to the beginning of the end. This was an exit stage left for Madonna and one of her most daring - I would say to this day - she went against expert advice that had influenced her before - Madonna had just fulfilled her obligations with her first signature in 1982. Madonna was unshackled from the institutions she has been rebelling against since day dot. For the first time in her career life she was free to do as she pleased because previously her record company kept her under control (so they thought - as her first ever MTV appearance in a wedding dress humping her veil as well as the stage - Manager told her this is the end of her career and Madonna shrugged it off but as usual she was right as it catapulted her to international rather than American Star lol -, being the brilliant woman she is - Madonna started her own record label called 'Maverick' when she signed herself on lol Love it - she also singed on Alanis Morissette and The Prodigy! (she also owns the label BOY TOY and Material Girl) - This was a record Madonna envisioned alone and obviously brought in the artists who she needed. She released the record alongside her first-ever attempt at publishing. It was titled SEX (SOLD as a coffee table book lol imagine that? back in 92 and even now it's a risky business)- Her SEX book sold over 150,000 copies on its first day in the United States and topped the New York Times Best Seller list for three weeks. In a matter of days, Sex sold more than 1.5 million copies worldwide and remained the best and fastest-selling coffee table book to this day. It also remains one of the most in-demand out-of-print publications of all time (number 2 is Stephen King 'RAGE' - haha). It was released - on five continents and in five languages - the day after Madonna’s Erotica album in a blaze of controversy with the Vatican calling for Catholics to boycott it and Japan banning it from sale shortly after its release. Quote: “I don’t think sex is bad. I don’t think nudity is bad. I don’t think that being in touch with your sexuality and being able to talk about it is bad. I think the problem is that everyone is so uptight about it and has turned it into a bad thing when it’s not. If people could speak freely, we would have more people practising safe sex, and we wouldn’t have people being sexually abused,” said Madonna, who is playing concerts in Australia in March, said in response to the outcry towards her book. That's the tip of the iceberg - I did sleep overnight at the city store for the SEX book and yes I have a cool metallic-covered sex original... This was Madonna's most GAY moment of her career and we sucked her up and made her our queen long ago but for her to bring us onto the front and centre of the global pop world was a master stroke that saved many young and old gay people who were stigmatised with AIDS rampant amongst our friends - one day you're chatting with an acquaintance at the local gay bar you see every week and the next day he disappears and the word is out he died due to complications HIV and nobody knew he was infected - also the drag queens disappearing - that's how horribly stigmatising it was that even the gay community rejected them so they hid it... Madonna changed the whole view of HIV and the irony of what was happening in the Gay world - I remember men eating as much as they can so not to lose weight or if someone is thin he must be HIV +; This is when the gay community became obsessed with fitness and the bodybuilding scene ( known as 'MUSCLE MARY') - So yes after HIV all men started to gain weight and build muscle with the vanity that is still existing today..... I've gone off the track so I shall make one last comment and that's Madonna's "Bad Girl" song and video clip - She was inspired by the film "Looking for Mr Goodbar" with Diane Keaton and Richard Gere, "Bad Girl" showcases where Madonna was in her personal life at that moment in time. While Louise becomes a metaphor for Madonna's failed romantic relationships (up until that point), she also demonstrates Madonna's own fear of death.

Interesting note on Fever: Originally there was another track recoreded called Goodbye to Innocence. During the final phase of production on the song Madonna started to sing the song Fever over the top of the track and liked how it sounded. She then decided to record Fever and include it rather than the original track. Goodbye to Innocence later appeared in a sampled version on the track Up Down Suite, which was a b-side of Rain and was later included on a Sire records promotion sampler. So... as its been mentioned in the comments, "In this life" was written about a friend of hers who had died of Aids, so it was a tribute to him, and to all those who had passed from it, and the whole album is about exploring your hidden desires and all the hurt and pain that comes from love, "Secret garden" is about her heart and how she feels about what people have said about her in the media, that she has been trampled on and seen as a tart, to put it mildly, but she has a soft heart and is a human being which seemed to get lost with all the media reports, hope this explains a little more, I'm not claiming to be a Madonna expert, as I'm sure everyone will have an opinion on what that song means ☺️ Much love and keep smiling 😉🤗❤️

The title track sounds like a dub with the repetive stark verses. I hope you get to react to the erotica WO remix. It actually has alot more of the type of lyrics you’re looking for (dirtier too) !

Some random thoughts: I love her version of "Fever." It was released as a single but the video used a remix called "Edit One," which many think is superior to the album mix. It is a little odd for a cover song to come so early in the album, but I think it works. "Bye Bye Baby" is the weakest song on the album (aside from "Did You Do It," which I pretend doesn't exist). "Rain" was also a single and is gorgeous. I'm sure it will become a favorite after you hear it a few more times (and see the video). "Secret Garden" is the best song on the album IMO. A spoken word song about how she wants to have a baby set to jazz and drum n' bass (which wasn't even a thing yet) - how could you not love it? It totally fits the album, sonically and thematically. It's a brilliant way to end the album!

Did You Do it? DIDNT exist on my cassette as a kid! Thank goodness for that!!! It is so unnecessary. I much prefer the remix of Waiting with Everlast. I think it was on a Rain maxi single. Did you do it should have been on that. But it probably would have not done it.

Its crazy! I remember music critics complaining about the song non traditional song structures at the time. Ironically its the way most of today's modern music is written!

No reaction to the best line of the album 😅 „…and the next time you want p*ssy, just look in the mirror baby“ (Waiting) I would’ve definitely expected you to vibe much more with the jazz feeling of Waiting and Secret Garden. Definitely my two favorites of the album.

A little known facts about the recording of the Erotica album is this: The vocals that they recorded for this album was the first time that Shep and M recorded the vocals in a proper recording studio. What a lot of people people don't know is that M vocals were recorded in Shep's home basement in a converted old wooden wardrobe. The two front doors were ripped off and a duvet cover was hung over the front to act as sound proofing. Cool huh!?! 😅😅❤❤

I do agree that some of the songs are too long. The fever video edit one remix is much better then the album version. My favourite songs are Erotica is brilliant especially the chorus so catchy Deeper and deeper Where life begins Bad girl Thief of heart Rain Why it’s so hard and In this life. But a true reinvention for Madonna. Actually in 2017 the erotica album as inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame. Madonna has 2 albums in the hall of fame like a prayer and erotica.

Erotica was such a departure from her previous albums so it took her fans and the press by surprise and for that reason I think you need to keep listening to it to appreciate the artistry of this album. This is GROWN Madonna not the pop diva singing Holiday and Into the Groove (which are still bops, but now she’s on a mission) She was angry and sad after a bitter divorce, and all the apathy and lack of compassion towards the gay community during the height of the AIDS crisis. Don’t get M mad or she will come for you. Lol. I think once you get over the seismic shift in her sound and past the overt sexuality of some of the songs, you see the profound messages she was trying to talk about that she never really got into in past albums. Like a Prayer was the start of this but while it has some of her best singles ever, for me it’s not as cohesive and well written as Erotica. A career peak.
@bennshouts Жыл бұрын
I would say this is my favourite album of hers so far, while there are some epic songs before, this is the most cohesive and I love that sm. It's the album I've listened to the most since reacting to any of hers. I'm so excited for more from this era!

@@bennshouts there are so many good demos from this era.."Shame", "You Are The One", "Dear Father", and the iconic "Goodbye To Innocence ", which ended up being replaced by Fever on the album but it did make it to the charity benefit album "Just Say Roe" and "You Thrill Me" which ended up becoming Erotica and she ended up performing it on the Confessions tour
