When I first saw the Deeper and Deeper video, I made it my mission that weekend to go to our local gay club with a bunch of pink helium balloons, and walked in with them. Only one gay guy got my reference and screamed at me, but I was living my best life. Happy memories of me being 19 years old too. (Yes, I’m 50 this year!!! WTF?.)

Madonna was such a force at this point in her career. I was 14 when this album came out. It was mind bending the controversy that happened at this time. Never seen anything like it since. Was a great time to be young and have this type of icon to look up to. Unreplicated

@@bennshouts Younger people are honestly more prudish today than back then. It was the adults who lost their minds in 1992. Forgot to mention in my other comment that yes I always interpreted the balloons to be a symbol of innocence. She frequently contrasts innocence and darkness.

I remember when the video to Erotica came out. Overnight, she became the most hated woman in America. Deeper And Deeper is definitely one of the weird ones, but it was inspired by the whole Andy Warhol era so it makes sense. Bad Girl is not only one of her best videos, but one of the best videos ever made, imo. Fever is awesome and she's wearing the late Vivianne Westwood in it. And Rain is just STUNNING. This time was one of her artistic peaks, for sure.

Bad Girl was directed by David Fincher, who also directed Oh Father, Vogue and Express Yourself, all cinematic masterpieces. While Bad Girl and Rain are definitely stunning and the most cinematic ones, my favorite will always be Deeper and Deeper for all its weirdness, hidden meanings and overall atmosphere. Madonna herself looks kinda creepy with no eyebrows. All of it was her idea and she even wrote the script.

Madonna was so prolific in the 90’s. Seemed like she was everywhere doing everything. And this is just the beginning of this era. She got so much hate for Erotica album, Sex book and her starring roll in “Body of Evidence”. Critics said she went too far, turned off all of her fans, and was over-exposed. While some of that was true she managed to survive and then put on “The Girlie Show”🔥🔥🔥 released the album Bedtime Story along with some absolutely stunning videos. Then she went to Star in “Evita” where she was amazing and won her Golden Globe. 🔥🔥🔥And if that wasn’t enough , she had a baby, released “Something To Remember” which was a collection of her ballads and to end the 90’s she gave us another masterpiece with “Ray of Light” with even more extraordinary songs and videos. It was an incredible time to be a Madonna fan and experience all of this unfold.

Great reaction yet again. What I love about the Erotica period is that so often (especially today) when celebrities want to align themselves with the lgbtq community they present a sanitised, heteronormative, almost conservative version of queerness, where being queer is just about glitter and rainbows and witty one liners. What Madonna did was celebrate the reality. I mean bathhouses, beats, S&M, kink, fetishwear, strip clubs, GoGo boys…..these things have always been, and continue to be a part of queer culture. It was so amazing that she didn’t try to sanitise and make queer culture palatable for the masses like so many of the artists today (not all of course, there are some great exceptions). I always think of that heteronormative take on queerness as the ‘Will and Grace’ effect….lol

You're right. She definitely fed us during this era. It was difficult to experience in real time though. The backlash was so cruel and harsh. I remember when "Bad Girl" came on the radio (in NY of all places), the DJ literally stopped it and said "Nobody wants to hear this" and laughed and put on a different song. It peaked at #36 in the U.S. and that might not seem like a big deal now. Artists have songs that don't chart well and they just move on, but at the time it was treated like the END of the world (and her career). Aside from "Oh Father," it was her first single not to crack the Top 10 in a decade. They hardly played the videos on MTV except for "Rain," which did a little better on radio. A really tough time to be a fan. I can only really compare it to today, but for much different reasons. On a side note, the sex mix of "Erotica" is actually more stripped down and demo-style, which is probably why you were hearing elements you didn't notice in the album version, which is much fuller and has more layers of things going on. Also the verses are totally different lyrically. Don't forget to react to her live performance of "Fever" on Arsenio Hall. Very different from the album and video versions. One of her best.

Wow Benn this made my day. Your Majourney guided by Ryan makes me happy and always cheers me up. I’m so glad that you’re loving the Erotica era so much. So much to say here. Because when she released the Erotica album and the Sex book she was at the peak of her career the anticipation for the song and music video were huge. Here in Australia they had an entire 1 hour show on Channel 9 devoted to showing the music video for the first time. It had to be shown after 9pm and have a special warning before the program. The Erotica music video is made up of footage from the shooting of the sex book and her shot in a studio wearing the mask with the hair and make up referencing sixties model Twiggy. Erotica did not meet commercial expectations. She was on the front of every newspaper and magazine in the world being called a witch and being compared to Satan. There was next to no positive press for her during this time. She was called untalented, cold, calculating and was written that she couldn’t sing. The world’s media said her career was over. So at the same time as these amazing videos she was going through the most difficult career period of her life. Deeper and Deeper is meant to be a weird music video and references the famous artist Andy Warhol and movies he made in the late 1960’s and early 1970s. This music video features a famous gay porn star (Joey Stefano) - the guy doing muscle poses while they eat bananas. It also features 2 different drag queens one of them being Chi Chi La Rue who ended up becoming one of the most famous directors in gay porn. This was before RuPaul had even released her first single which made her famous. That’s how groundbreaking Madonna was back in 1992. Bad Girl was directed by David Fincher who also directed the music videos for Express Yourself, Oh Father and Vogue. The man who plays her conscience is famous actor Christopher Walken. The premise is that he is either the Angel of death or her guardian Angel. While both Erotica and Deeper and Deeper had both been top ten hits Bad Girl was Madonna’s first single to miss the top 40 in Australia since her Aussie debut of Burning Up in 1983. This all contributed to the world saying that Madonna was over. Fever was not released in America but was released in Europe and Australia. The song was remixed as you picked up featuring Donna and Nikki (the colourful backing singers from the Blond Ambition tour). The video was directed by Kylie Minogue’s later boyfriend who shot the Impossible Princess album cover. Fever also did not make the top 30 in Australia. Rain was a cinematic masterpiece. It also was a huge hit in Australia. It was a couple of months before the Girlie show. She looks so stunning in this video. The song was a huge radio hit in Australia and restored her back to the top 10. Even though Madonna was suffering a huge backlash she also had many articles written about her impact on society to the point where you could actually study Madonna at university and how she was impacting society. She was so hated there was even a book released called “The I Hate Madonna handbook” which I have a copy of. I believe the reason she did the stripped down performances of Fever and Bad Girl was that she had been accused of not being able to sing her entire career. Bad Girl in particular is vocally a very difficult song to sing. She wanted her voice to speak for itself. One thing you mentioned was how the music videos gave all of the songs more life and made you appreciate them in a different way. Madonna had said before that when she is writing songs she sees them in a visual way in her mind. To me she is like a painter and always either the music video or the live performance enhance the song to show her true creative and artistic vision for the song. Love that you are experiencing the full artistry of Madonna. You can see she’s not just a singer she is an actual artist and changed the face of music forever. She’s a living legend for a reason. Very excited to see what Ryan has in store next and happy to support him and you on your Majourney. BTW this is why your honesty in your opinion is so important. Reactions like this are so much sweeter because we know that you are loving her 30 years later for real. Question what are some of the songs you didn’t like that have grown on you? We’re all dying to know

This era is so strong with the references. Erotica is kind of a BTS of her Sex Book. Deeper and Deeper is a tribute to Andy Warhol movies and art work (the bananas...) Bad Girl is a 90's take on Looking for Mr. Goldbar (?) Fever reflects the era of acid house(the single version is quite different). Rain is more of a meta retro futuristic feel. I-CO-NIC

Loved it! There are so many things to say about these vidéos... Erotica= actually is just a ' behind the scenes ' of SEX Book ( except Dita.... ) Deeper and Deeper = a magnificent tribute to Andy Warhol ( her personal friend) and the importance of letting go our 'demons and idols' we are carrying from our past ( everything that stop us from going ahead like religion, fear of people judgment etc ) as balloons in the sky. Bad Girl= you got it! Fever= iconically dressed by fabulous Vivienne Westwood Rain = fantastic cameo of Ryuichi Sakamoto Tips take a look at the end of those exhibitions at SNL..... 🤣 Another beautiful live of Fever was the one at the Arsenio Hall Show ( and naturally the Girlie Show one!!! )

Madonna explains how this song was created - About so many friends she once had but since died of AIDS-related illness. It’s about trying to bring awareness to a situation that some people still don’t think is real, but it’s everywhere (when she released this song in 1992 HIV was still a death sentence but the Gay world had become desensitised to the reality as you can imagine we were all HIV fatigued and people just gave up on safe sex). It's also about her fear of dying, The song and video are loosely based on the 1970s movie "Looking for Mr Goodbar". She takes the stalking man that kisses her before death to her apartment, taking cocaine with him and sleeping with him. He leaves in a hurry and gives her a Quaalude pill to counteract the cocaine. This causes her to oversleep and she arrives very late for work the next day, angering her staff and clients. The guy then disappears (The one that left Madonna that note 'thank you for the night whomever you are') - She didn't see him for a long while, and Madonna initially misses him. Through her job, Madonna also meets and dates another man. Seeing him as a potential husband for her. However, they do not have sex because he wants a traditional courtship and a monogamous relationship. Madonna sees this as stifling her freedom. Although he initially seems nice, over time he appears to become controlling and also disrespectful of Madonna. Moreover, he shows signs of being just as perverted and selfish as her previous drug-taking lover. Madonna begins to go out to more marginal places and has sex with complete strangers, often with older men. Her first lover (the drug taker that left the note on her bed) eventually returns and acts as if nothing had happened. He barges in on Madonna while she is with another man and chases him away. He becomes controlling and abusive, and Madonna also discovers he is a street hustler. She breaks up with him but he stalks and harasses her, both at home and at her workplace (that's the famous actor that kissed her before her death - Christopher Walken). After imagining what could happen if he were to turn her into the police as revenge, Madonna gathers up all of the drugs in her apartment and flushes them down the toilet. With the New Year approaching, Madonna resolves to turn over a new leaf and take control of her life. On New Year's Eve, Madonna meets a man in a bar, and cajoles him into helping her avoid Christopher Walken. the man she met at the bar has been living with his gay lover but lies to Madonna, telling her that he has a pregnant wife in Florida. When they are in bed together at her apartment, he finds himself unable to achieve an erection. He then sniffs a "popper". Madonna tells him that it is okay if they don't have sex but he misinterprets this as questioning his sexuality. In a rage, he attacks her, rapes her, and then stabs her repeatedly, killing her. This is based on the movie that I've seen and Madonna's interview when she mentioned the movie - so I watched the movie again and the music video afterwards and they correlate. If you want to see Madonna sex book behind scenes I have it on my video list and also I recorded the song that's in the background of Erotica (It's a Lebanese singer named Fairuz and she is singing about the crucifixion and it's a Hymn that is sung every Easter Friday - yes I would listen to it in church as a kid lol....)

I could comment a cavalcade of Madonna facts and observations on the casting and making of these videos, and all her videos. I could talk about how Naomi Campbell, Isabella Rossellini, Joey Stefano and so many others are featured in the Erotica video. I could talk about Debi Mazar, Chi Chi LaRue and Sofia Coppola in the Deeper and Deeper video… But I got a bit stuck on you saying “what’s this old man thing” about the Machiavellian character played by the GREAT Udo Kier. Udo is an incredible German cult actor, initially famous for performing in the important cult Andy Warhol produced films directed by Paul Morrissey (watch those to understand the hot long haired dude in white undies is a reference to the iconic Joe Dallesandro, and these films are also the major influence on this video, even down to the grainy 16mm film stock it’s shot on). Udo Kier also acted in many other films including most of Lars Von Trier’s, and one of the great 🏳️‍🌈 films, Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho) and in the cult horror series The Kingdom. I know you were just making an off the cuff remark, but when you refer to someone as brilliant and culturally resonant as Udo Kier as just a random “old man”, you kinda miss a major point of why Madonna (and all great artists) are so interesting. Because time and age is immaterial to art. She’s reaching across generations as a woman in her mid 30s in Deeper and Deeper, referencing the 70s when she was a teenager (an era she returns to again spectacularly in her Confessions On A Dance Floor era), and Udo Kier is a stunningly authentic part of that real 70s Warhol Superstars world… I also think, given a good number of your views and subscribers will be people who were Madonna fans back in the day, people who are in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond now, you’d be wise to avoid overtly ageist remarks, even when they’re just about the narrative of a music video. I’m sure you didn’t mean it that way, but words have power. You’ll find that Madonna’s work, while being dazzling and original in its own right as toweringly important pop culture, can also function as a hub from which to learn about popular culture and art in general. Her references are almost always sophisticated and layered, and if you follow each thread - google this casting choice, visual reference or nod to an era - then you go on a deeper and deeper journey into the farthest reaches of our culture.

The Deeper and Deeper music video is inspired. A take on artist Andy Warhol's legendary underground movies that he made with one hand held video camera with all the Factory superstars and hangers on that surrounded him. These films were infamous and legendary and starred all his weird and unusual friends who were all relegated to the outskirts of society by the bigoted judgemental society they grew up in and labelled freaks and faggots and whores for their brave refusal to be whatever they were in an ignorant society that couldn't define them. Transvestites and drag artists like Candy Darling, Holly Woodlawn, Ultra Violet and sexually ambivalent studs like Joe Dallesandro, John Giorno and off course Udo Kier(the older guy in the video filming everything with his video camera). They were all in Andy's movies. Madonna had a lot of her friends in the music video too. Debi Mazar, director Sofia Coppola, Ingred Chavez, Seymour Stein(Sire Records President) and legendary gay porn director Chi Chi LaRue. She is an innovator and historian. Always giving praise where it is due. J

So glad to see you enjoying this era. I really feel you almost could go back in time 30 years from now and feel those songs and see these videos with the eyes of 1992-1993 😅 So cool. By the way, the evolving of the song Erotic / Erotica is insane. Insane. Early demos did not feature her spoken and whispering sound, rather her singing and completely different lyrics at least in the chorus. There are so many demos of that song and you can see the song evolving into the final version to this dark, raw and mystical song Erotica. The working titles for those are Love Hurts and You Thrill Me. Those are really worth listening to. Anyway, a very very cool reaction. Thank you! ❤

Then I got a drink and Deeper and Deeper started playing, so I immediately went to the dance floor. Then the first person I saw was a friend from school who was also a closeted gay like me. So he said: “What are you doing here, man?” Then I answered: “Well, I guess the same that you are doing here.” Then we laughed hahahhaah! But what “Deeper and Deeper” is about? Lyrically it’s about a gay guy coming, metaphorically is about anal sex and visually is about Andy Warhol and his creativity mixed up with the 70s and early 80s club scene in Ney York. The balloons are about the lost of innocence and represent Madonna’s transformation into an adult woman after living among these people. “Erotica” is and probably will always be my favorite Madonna’s album. Thank you for your reaction. Cheers!

Ha, love it! Have so many similar reactions to these videos/songs. Bad Girl is an incredible video (definitely top 5 Madonna vids) - it's criminal that the song didn't do better, but yeah the Erotica/Sex book backlash was too strong. It's a mini-movie, and Christopher Walken is perfect in it.

2:12 Isabella Rossalini 2:21 Naomi Campbell Written with her "Vogue" collaborator Shep Pettibone, this ode to S&M introduces Madonna's sultry alter ego, Dita Parlo, who beckons listeners into a world of pleasure and pain: My name is Dita I'll be your mistress tonight I'd like to put you in a trance (YT low-down below): The real Dita Parlo wasn't quite so scandalous. She was a popular actress in French and German films of the 1930s, most notably Jean Vigo's L'Atalante, and faded from the public eye after World War II. In Madonna's hands, Dita is a sex goddess with a gold-capped tooth whose erotic exploits are cataloged in the singer's controversial Sex book. While working on the accompanying Erotica album, Pettibone suggested using the book's carnal tales for inspiration. "Madonna took the book and walked out of the room and didn't come back until about half an hour later," he recalled. "Suddenly she was on the mic, speaking in this very dry voice. 'My name is Dita,' she said, 'and I'll be your mistress tonight.' I knew that the original 'Erotica' would never be the same again, and it wasn't. The chorus and bridge were changed entirely and the whole psyche of the song became sexier, more to the point. It seemed as if Dita brought out the best in her, actually serving as a vehicle for the dangerous territory she was traveling." The music video, directed by fashion photographer Fabien Baron, was shown just three times on MTV before it was banned. The clip features Madonna aka Dita in dominatrix gear and footage from the making of the Sex book, with guest appearances from Isabella Rossellini, Big Daddy Kane, and Naomi Campbell. The single was also banned from airplay and once again got the singer in hot water with the Vatican (see "Like A Prayer"). When asked about the change in her singing voice, Madonna told NME: "It came as a result of growing up and being more in touch with myself and singing deeper inside my chest. That had to do with my growth as a person, not wanting to be a little girl anymore. And not wanting to sound like a little girl." Erotica and Sex were Madonna's first two projects after she founded the multimedia entertainment company Maverick.

What’s funny is, in the beginning of the Deeper and Deeper music video, the guy doesn’t actually say what’s said in the subtitles, he says “you have to dress the junker, you have to put trousers on him!” in German (but I have no clue what’s that supposed to mean regarding the video lmao)

11:42 I was 12/13 when Erotica was released. I lived in Peru and in pre-internet/KZbin world, access to videos and information about this album and controversy was limited. For some reason, I’ve always deep dived into things I’m interested, I learned about all the scandal and backlash in USA. I wasn’t keen for the video of Erotica and book Sex bc I thought she was pushing it too much on purpose and I hated it but then I sort of understood she was standing against prejudices, specially during times when HIV was rampant and thought as a dead sentence. And I was all about the album. Bad Girl was/is one of my fav songs; when I saw the video I was shocked. What was she saying? Did the controversy made her going backwards? I thought the idea of the video was “having sex with so many people will end up badly at some point”. This sort of scared me and for my initial years of sexual exploration I was always aware of my partner not trying to kill me! Thank you Queen! 😂
