This album is a masterpiece! It was the birth of electronica into the mainstream pop genre. And is often listed as one of the best albums of all time for good reason! Loved hearing your lyrical interpretations. You really listen to what the artist has to say as well, and that’s refreshing! Hope you react to more Madonna... She is a true shape shifter, and each of her albums is completely unique in its sound and message. You should react to Confessions on a dance floor which is pure disco gold and another fan fave! Also check out her latest Madame X album! It’s an experimental global trip with a mix of different music genres, it’s truly incredible!

Little Star was written for Lourdes. She became a mother during Evita (she was pregnant during the filming of) and becoming a mother is what sparks her spiritual and motherly rebirth that becomes the basic themes for the Ray of Light era

If you're interested in analyzing another Madonna album, there's a lot of classics by her, but i feel like her most recent work, Madame X, is one of her most interesting outputs. It deals with a strong change in her life, new cultures she explored and the state of politics/the world as of now, similarly to Ray Of Light
@SDoesNotKnow4 жыл бұрын
I honestly wouldn't recommend "Madame X" for a new Madonna listener. That album is very experimental and different, and I think one needs to be eased into it with more accessible work and then build up to her more challenging work.

@workinprogresssince19803 жыл бұрын
@@Gustyrd1 Hey man, I agree with you. That Madame X album was a poetic disaster. That album is a mess from beginning to end, and the usage of autotune on every song destroyed it. I didn't think she could make something as bad as Hard Candy again, but she did with Madame X.

Wow! I spent most of this reaction dripping with tears, I kid you not. I enjoy the Madonna song/video reactions that float around the Internet as people begin exploring her catalog, but yours is different. You pay attention. Madonna is a very deep lyricists and isn't given enough credit for it. This was one of her deepest albums emotionally and spiritually and I'm so happy you caught onto that...and also got into the 90s groove of it, too. I've watched so many of her own interviews during this time and she shared many of the ideas about rebirth, religious exploration, love and family that you caught...but at the same time doesn't tell us every inspiration...leaving us to make our own interpretations of the songs. And it was emotional when your interpretation matched mine so closely. One thing that is unique about this album that you mentioned was that she's very subtle in the way she expressed her political views. The albums where she's more explicit don't go over so well. Like I said, most reactions skip over the meaning of songs and just rate the "bop" quality. Thank you for such a deep retrospective and such an influential album. Other Madonna albums worth this type of analysis would be Like A Prayer and American Life! Though, I look forward to ANY Madonna reactions! Thanks again!

I'm a long time/huge Madonna fan, and this album blew me away when it came out, especially because William Orbit produced. That's why it sounds so different than any other Madonna album. I think it's one of her (if not the) best. The first track Drowned World/Substitute for Love is one my favorites, and one that I played on repeat ad nauseam style. The entire album is good though. It's one of the few albums I can play from beginning to end without skipping a track. I still listen to it often to this day. So glad you finally got to experience it!!!

I've read a few comments but haven't see but this album was inspired hugely by the birth of her daughter in 1996. It gave her new aspect and a new meaning of love and fame. Drowned world is about finding her new path, one which includes her daughter. It's her new religion. That deep bound mother love she was finally experimenting and giving but also being scared as she lost her mother when she was 5-6 hear old so she never got experience that herself. It was an awakening for her. And if you have listen to bedtime stories, the title song of that 1994 album was a little glance of what direction Madonna was going to get into. She was really intrigued by the European electro trance pop music they were already doing.

She is very well read, and was not allowed to Ever watch television, by the way, by her father. She has stated that she is attracted to darkness and to suffering (and, having lost her mother at a young age....) The power of goodbye is actually a song about her former husband Sean Penn. She was married to him from 1985 to 1989 (split in 1988 but divorce officialized in 1989). In the 1991 documentary, she says in the truth or dare segment of the same title movie that Sean is the love of her life. And in 1995, Madonna was receiving the most fashionable artist at the VH1 awards and when she walked on stage to receive the trophy, Sean was the one surprising her with the award. Her reaction is worth watching. She is taking off guard and once they exchange a weird shake, she takes the microphone and says "That was dirty". She still had a grudge for what he had done. And after being done with Evita, she started writing for this album (ray of light) in 1997. And the song was abut finally being able to say goodbye to old feelings she had for him and because of that 1995 encounter, they started talking again and grew a distant friendship. Sean has even reach out to her for some advice.

Do you easy to listen the japan bonus track of the album? The japan released in the album included a bonus track, ''Has to Be''. ''Has to Be'' and ''Frozen'' was my favorites songs of this album. ''Has to Be'' was more a new age song, this song discover a another side of him. If you love Enya, you love ''Has to Be'' this song was similar at the style of Enya. In Japan, instead to close for ''Mer Girl'', the album closes with her bonus track ''Has to Be''. ''Frozen'' was a very dark song and one of my favorites songs of him. ''Ray of Light'' was my favorite album of hum. I love the songs whe he included mysterious and dark feeling of the songs at the base. This is the reason why ''Another Day in Paradise'' of Phil Collins, ''Refuse to Dance'' of Céline Dion, ''Frozen'' of Madonna and also ''Black and White'' of Sarah Mclachlan. Adele also saying the song ''Frozen'' was the inspiration behind the song ''Hello''.

@@ericmason6540 Yes, ''Ray of Light'' was my favorite album of Madonna and i listen all the time since the first time i heard this album in 2009. FOr curiosity, because i'm was a fan of this album and because i know ''Has to Be'' was only in the japan version on the album, i heard this song in KZbin before i buy the japan CD in Ebay and this a huge loving of this song, i'm a huge fan of this song and this is reason why i buy the japan CD in Ebay. It's a shame that ''Has to Be'' was not included outside the japan, because this song was my favorite of this album outside ''Frozen''. Depist this song was a new age song, this song fit without problem of the rest of the songs of the album. Because ''Mer Girl'' was a more calm song, the transition was natural and very good sequencing in this album. I listen ''Has to Be'' before sleeping each night in my radio. This album was her best album to date and a huge album in the industry of music.

Eric. I like your reviews. With Madonna’s music though, you need to understand where she was at when she wrote each album. Every Album she has released is from her point of view and usually is about her life or something she’s experienced. It’s not like a lot of music out that’s now, like pre produced singers. She’s an artist… GAGA, Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Pink are the only ones that comes close to her messages, lyrics, music, fashion and messages.

Please, let me know if you do another Madonna reaction! I really like how you analyse the lyrics and hope to see you analysing American Life, Like a Prayer and Madame X!

Binging your Madonna reactions now since I’m a new follower. So great! If you want future suggestions of whom to react to I’d love you to discover Belinda Carlisle. I’m having a renaissance with her music and persona these days...both from being lead singer of The Go-Gos to her solo career. Thank you for doing these. ☺️

For new listener I would recomend Confessions on a dance floor, which is a disco pop oriented. The priduction is timeless, or Rebel heart, which is more recent and it is pure pop. It isn’t focused on production that much, but you get some amazing lyrics there

Loved your insight on this album! If you liked the introspective side of it, I'd definitely recommend reacting to her 2003 album American Life - her most underrated in my opinion, and sonically very interesting.

Little Star is a song for her first born LOLA. The album is in lieu of her experience with her search...travel...to truth..love...happines..............finding herself at the end!
