So Madonna paved the way for the Electronica/EDM sound that of 2009-2011, she's ahead by half a decade with this song.

I always wondered why this song received so much hate. To me it is a total masterpiece. Probably too innovative and original for a James Bond song. People prefer more generic Bond songs.

I remember when it was released, only because it was "too electronic" for a james bond song, still one of my fave madonna singles, this song aged soooo well
@moonstone11594 жыл бұрын
I agree. I think the fuss may have been that Madonna did not stick with the usual ballad theme songs that are featured in James Bond movies, but rather gave us an upbeat/clubby song instead. I think the song and video conveyed the good- vs-evil theme well, which is what Bond movies are all about. The psychological context--killing the ego--was a brilliant touch.

One thing you didn't mention is that "Die Another Day" video, produced by Traktor, is still to this day when adjusted for inflation, the second most expensive music video of all time, after Michael and Janet Jackson's "Scream". Interestingly, Madonna also holds #3 position with the much, much older "Express Yourself" video AND "Bedtime Story". Also, just something that's driving me a bit crazy (although it's a small thing): Mirwais is not pronounced "Mar-wee", it's closer to "Meer-ways". You can hear it here, where he's being introduced: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZ6vkKqOhNCVmc0

Nobody ever seems to mention the setting for the fight sequences. Because Die Another Day was the 20th Bond movie, and the anniversary was very much part of the promotional campaign, this video showcases various characters and props from many of the Bond films going back to the beginning. The gallery they are fighting in is full of so many Easter eggs.

Not just Die Another Day, but the entire American Life album is based on Dialectics with references from psychoanalysis and social psychology. Dialectics that is not just a representational theory, but the reality that the theory represents: it is the DUALITY THAT COMPLEMENTS ITSELF (good x evil, courage x fear, strength x weakness, light x shadow, love x hate, equality x difference , etc.). Therefore, Madonna asks Sigmund Freud - the father of psychoanalysis - to analyze her. The fight is internal. She against herself. Her versus the part they played her. She in favor of what she is becoming through movement and action. The song speaks of the fear of life and yet the urge to survive. Death drive and life drive. Mutually complementary and feedback contradictions. A philosophical music involved in the best instruments and mechanisms of EDM at a time when R&B, Hiphop gangsta and new metal dominated. Virtue of the queen of pop.

Despite all her long time career and successes, I still think Madonna is THE most underrated artist of the last 5 decades or so. Maybe even EVER. She and her artistry confuses people over the years, and often misunderstood, as a result. I cannot think of another artist who is more of substance. And yet her intentions and her social commentaries over the years are not paid enough attention to, by the general public.

It was main theme song..the video is homage to the film...the torture is a re-enactment of the opening of the movie..she had a role in the movie as a fencing instructor for bond and there were references to previous films with the cat-blowfeld, the spicked shoe-rosa klebb, you see the bowler hat-odd job and the golden gun-scaramanga, also the gold figure- goldfinger as this was 20th bond film she references previous bond villans/props etc. in video.

Madonna is a very successful movie soundtracks artist : CRAZY FOR YOU (number 1 in the us 1985), LIVE TO TELL (number 1 in 1986), WHOS THAT GIRL (1987 and number 1 ) THIS USED TO BE A PLAYGROUND (1992 and also number 1 ) and BEAUTIFUL STRANGER for the AUSTIN POWER movie (number 19 with only airplay in 1999) so the James Bond producer want Madonna .Madonna always loves the strings in her work and with Mirwais it's a kind of electro and strings mixed .Madonna said that she loves Serge Gainsbourg work (french iconic singer from the 60s to late 80s)and it was all about the frenchies with the American Life era with Mirwais and also Michel Colombier for the strings who worked with the great Serge Gainsbourg back in the day .On AMERICAN LIFE the song EASY RIDE has a lot of beautiful strings by Colombier !Also in 2001 the song DONT TELL ME (huge hits and beautiful video ) was a Mirwais / Colombier collaboration

Madonna's 'Die Another Day' song also touches on Sigmund's Freud's notion of the 'death drive' in all human beings. But instead of Madonna's death drive leading to ultimate self-destruction she subverts the idea of the finality of death into one of freedom, survival and continuity of consciousness. Hence she sings 'Sigmund Freud! Analyse this!' Because she is completely subverting and mocking his patriarchal ideas and limitations in support of a more optimistic feminist revision of the notion of death. We are more than just physical bodies. We are souls with consciousness and even though our bodies will come to an end the soul will transcend and continue on its journey. Trust me - she was into a lot of theoretical and esoteric theory at around this time in the late nineties and early noughties while married to Guy Ritchie!

On the movie the song appears twice, but on the end credits it's on the form of a dance remix that was available on the maxi-single(call them digital EPs today). The song was not available as individual single (there were still no digital singles at the time) so to have you had to buy the 9 tracks maxi-single, the movie OST or the album (all cost almost the same). Probably that helped the song to be Top selling dance single in US in both 2002 and 2003 (the song was released in late October 2002 and as was not available in any other format). This was the first single from "American Life" album. The "American Life" song was released in April 2003 and was also only available as maxi-single/EP or on the Album (in US). In countries like Canada, Italy or Spain there was a 2 track CD-single available for both "Die Another Day" and "American Life" singles making the songs peak much higher on the charts as those were price as just $2.99 (the EP was priced as $10.99)

The three Hebrew letters on the electric chair are L A V / Lamed Aleph Vav (read from right to left, the L is on the right side). It’s one of the 72 names of God in medieval Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah). These names are not the traditional ones taken directly from the bible or from standard rabbinical teaching, but were created by combining the letters of 3 verses from Exodus 14 which follow each other (verses 19-21) and in Hebrew all have 72 letters. In these verses the presence of God through his angel, cloud and fire protects the Israelites from the mighty Egyptian army by moving in between the two camps. The L A V combination is said to express the divine purifying of spaces, eliminating of ego and banishing of evil.
