She was so criticized and called a whore and everything else bc of erotica and sex that she went into a depression then naturally in true form she blasted the people who made her feel badly with this song. Madonna always stays true to her dancing roots. The choreo is amazing, especially with 9 dancers in separate cubes staying totally in sync while unable to see each other.

This was after the Erotica era which was very controversial. This was her response to that. Alot of people were against her, but I think Erotica and Bedtime Stories (the album this was a part of) is just more appreciated today, after all these years. Madonna has always been ahead of her time.

Even though the song wasn't received well by radio, I remember VH-1 playing the absolute heck out of this video. And this was at a time when stuff like Foo Fighters, Nirvana, etc. were too "hard" for VH-1.

This song and Survival from the same album were the responses to people who said that her career was over... just for expressing her own sexuality and trying to empower, in a sense, women. And also talking about important issues like aids... always the queen! 👏

I loved everything about your reaction. I remember the same delight in hearing this song for the first time. It charted at Number 8 in the U.K. Although it wasn’t an enormous global hit in 1994, it has become one of Madonna’s most popular tracks since then and she has performed it since and updated it. Sometimes a track comes out that people aren’t ready for at the time but then it just hangs around. The whole album is underrated.

Well this whole album was off the back of Erotica album which had backlash and mixed reviews but a lot of people like me thought Erotica was underrated. Then Ray of Light came and turned her popularity on its head like it was back in the 1980’s.

In addition to reasons you mentioned, this was the fourth single from Bedtime Stories and by this point in her career, it was hard for Madonna to get much airplay beyond the first couple of singles from an album. Also, if you look at her recent hits at the time ("Take a Bow," "Secret," "I'll Remember," "Rain"), they were all ballad or midtempo. In the mid 90s R&B and adult contemporary ballads were huge. "Take a Bow" was STILL getting lots of airplay when "Human Nature" came out and for whatever reason Madonna opted to go for riskier follow-up singles rather than release another ballad from the album. Some local stations started playing "Don't Stop" instead of "Human Nature," so it was clear there was an appetite for more Madonna at the time.

Yes this is her flipping the bird to everyone. I loved this video. Fun fact...she has mentioned that all outfits in this video were bought at the local adult store and those are not her cornrows, pieces were placed ontop of her blonde hair. Derek, whole Bedtime Stories sound like this, with some music intire influenced by Jazz, Hip Hop and R&B. This was the first album after Erotica and Human Nature is a response to critics and conservatism that atacked her years later. If you like this, I believe youll love the others songs, specially Secret and I'd Rather Be Your Lover

A few things: the song references the "Sex" book, Madonna's poor treatment and bias by the Media during the release of "Sex" and the corresponding album ("Erotica") and what began to be a pattern of "Number 2's" (several of her albums in the 90's doing well, but missing the #1 spot) "Human Nature" was also the final single from "Bedtime Stories," and competed the same month in 1995 against the juggernaut single "Scream" by Michael and Janet Jackson, which shattered the Beatles record for debuting at #5 on the Billboard 200 (until Michael Jackson's HIStory and its first two singles "Scream" #5, and "You Are Not Alone" #1, no artist had debuted a single automatically in the top 5, since the Beatles) Also many radio stations would not play the controversial single due to Madonna D's use of "bitch" and "shit" in the chorus, until the song was edited, remixed or censored. She moved on quickly later in 1995, releasing the compilation album "Something to Remember" while she trained and filmed "Evita" in 1996.

This video is a masterpiece. It is by legendary French photographer Jean baptist Mondino . This was her answer to all the haters and critics after the backlash of Sex & Erotica era. To this day its still modern and magnificent and you can't take your eyes off of it.... The song is one her most underrated and best and one that she performs a lot at her concerts....

The reason this didn’t do so well was because so many narrow minded idiots had jumped onto the “I Hate Madonna” bandwagon. Following the release of the Erotica album, the infamous SEX book and the release of the erotic thriller movie Body of Evidence, the media labelled Madonna as “The Queen of Sleaze”, others referenced her music as “The Devils” music and she took a lot of stick. At the end of her The Girlie Show tour she vowed that she would never perform again... this was the first time Madonna opened up and was vulnerable from what they were writing and saying about her... her ART was misunderstood.... this song/video was a big F You to all of those critics. You’re right about the Symbol her dancers produced with the ropes as this was her referencing people saying that her music was “The Devils Music”. Truly underestimated song... one of my faves❤️❤️❤️ She recently made this available to download along with the remix’s, the first time she has done that with an old song (minus American life single). Pleeeeeease react to “Secret” from Bedtime Story... you will LOVE it!!! 😊

I’m a little younger than the OG Madonna fans who loved her since the 80’s. All the old Madonna I heard was from my older cousins records, so this along with Rain and Secret were some of the first “modern” Madonna songs I ever heard. My cousins also had the SEX book, which at 7 yo, I prob shouldn’t have seen 😂, but inevitably I saw it, and then seeing her not apologize for her self expression and shit on ageism and misogyny (I remember late night shows saying she was too old to be around), I was hooked after I saw this video. As a dancer also, the choreography in this video is SO hard, bc it’s physically complex and hard, but you have to emote waaaaay more than you would in any other context. This is a masterpiece in my mind.

M is the ONLY wo(man) with balls in the business... always has - always will! This is a big part why I love her as an artist but most of all as a human being! After Erotica the media in general were not having it and didn’t pay much attention nor ever gave her credit... Bedtime Stories is a darker but absolute brilliant album, haunting and mesmerizing at times. I love it but general public & press tried to ignore it - shame on them! Madonna was/is too avant-garde in many ways and a lot of people try to minimize her art and these same assholes will be the ones praising her genius once she will be gone!
