MADONNA Reaction: RAIN (Official Video)

First reaction to the video to Rain. I'd heard the song a few times before this which is why I'm not as amazed by the song as you would expect for a reaction. One of my absolute favourite Madonna songs.

Ryuichi Sakamoto is the director in this video. He recently passed away and is an actual film maker and played one here.

He's a musician/composer/actor and not a filmmaker. He is best known as one third of Yellow Magic Orchestra. He's also an Oscar winner for the score he wrote for the film The Last Emperor. RIP.

$1.6 million for Madonna's lounge chair...I have to share a story about the lounge chair that Madonna relaxes on in this "Rain" video. This song and video has always been one of my favorites. And i got a big surprise about 10 years ago when i was walking through the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. As i was walking through the modern art or sculpture section, i saw this lounge chair! I was pretty surprised to see this chair because i knew it was the one from "Rain". I was excited and decided to do some research on this chair. The name of the chair is the "Lockheed Lounge", designed by fresh-out-of-the-Arts-school Australian designer Marc Newson. It is one the most iconic pieces of modern furniture, and certainly, the most expensive one to date by a living designer. I'll let you all do your research if you would like but here are a few facts. There is a Limited Edition, 1986-1988, of 10 loungers. AND 4 Artist"s Proofs and one Prototype Chair (1988). The piece featured in "Rain" was one of the 4 Artist Proofs. It originally belonged to the designer's mother in a private collection. Eventually it was auctioned off in London on April 30, 2009 for approximately 1.6 million dollars...Yo! Leave it to MADONNA!!

Actually it wasn't 😉 It's just some marketing narrative somebody came up with during the promo for the video. It was shot in full colour with 35mm and was consequently "brushed up" digitally. Great and timeless effect nevertheless.

This brings back memories of a high school friend of mine who passed away a couple of years ago, she was a huge fan of Madonna and when the Erotica album came out she quickly bought the cassette tape which i ended up borrowing from her, to this day i have no idea what happened to that cassette tape lol, she was so mad that i lost it, it was probably stolen. It was a test to our friendship which lasted until her passing, but our friendship was stronger than her love for Madonna and that was saying something, RIP Carolina 💖

This song will always remind me of being in the queue for the Girlie show at Wembley. We could hear her and the backing singers rehearsing "Rain" for the show that evening. One of my favorite songs and stunning video.

Rain also reminds me of seeing the Girlie Show at Wembley Stadium in London as well. I went to the show on Saturday the 26th, how about you? I wasn't lucky enough to hear or see any of the rehearsals. I was actually out of the country on holiday and we only flew into Manchester at 3 or PM. So had to drive from Manchester airport to Wembley Stadium. Well actually we (me and my m8) were only 16 so the parentals had to do the driving. When I look back I was soooo lucky but I never gave them them the huge incredible thanks at the time that they were due. ❤️❤️🌈🌈

The song was inspired by the novel Wuthering Heights by Charlotte Bronte. Madonna originally wanted the music video to be in b&w and to be romantic and be based on the same novel Wuthering Heights. But when she hired Mark Romanek to direct her music video, his vision was more futuristic. So they came to a compromise and she went with more of his vision. Sources say that this music video was shot in b&w and hand colored each frame. Mark also directed Madonna's Bedtime Story music video. Good reaction and observations especially about the Martha Graham inspired arm and hand movements.

Erotica, while not my favorite album, totally delivered on the visuals. Madonna's character portrayals in all her videos are always so well thought out...specific and detailed. Rain is particularly stylish with its Japanese minimalist fashion (Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto were having a major moment in the early 90s as sort of the "anti" to the excess of the 80s) Also the iconic Marc Newsom aluminum "Lockheed" chaise on which she reclines, studying her script and working out her character. I do recall her saying she did not particularly enjoy shooting this, spending a couple days being doused with water LOL

I've watched the Rain video a few times recently, with my sad face on. I had a major crush on Ryuichi Sakamoto 40 years ago, after he was in Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence with Bowie, you should check out that film or his own group the Yellow Magic Orchestra, they were, I'm going to say it... big in Japan... very big. He's sadly missed. My OH was just making the point the other day, that over the past 30 or 40 years, Madonna will have met *all* the interesting people of our time, she seeks out good brains. It irks me somewhat that I won't live long enough to read her Diaries when they're published.

Ok Jonny, Madonna has really sucked you in lol. I say this as a crazy fan. Two things that are uniquely Madonna: her amazing control of her body, specially hand movements, and her humming. Frozen had both! Don't forget the ultimate hand anthem - Vogue! Rain was the last video for the Erotica album and in my opinion a bit of damage control after the backlash of the album and book. Both the song and the video are classics! She followed it up with I'll Remember, which had a similar vibe, and was another hit in the US.

The earliest arm/hand choreography, to me, is the performance of Like A Virgin from Blond Ambition Tour. There's also Isaac from Confessions Tour that nearly resembles the LAV Blonde Ambition movement. I guess Voguing, but it's not as graceful.
