I hope you’ll react to 2008’s “Hard Candy”. It is a polarizing album since most fans have deemed it the most “un-Madonna” album in her discography while some fans (like me) think that it is a carefree dance-pop record which is very Madonna. You should also react to “I’m Breathless”.

Rebel Heart was conceptualized as a double album with a Rebel and a Heart side. The label wouldn't allow her to carry out this idea. Songs started to leak months before she had even completed or announced the project due to a hack, and the entire post-production process was rushed to get the album out before any major damage was done. She referred to the project as her "end of the world record", meaning she wanted to write music that she could strip down and play acoustic in a post apocalyptic setting. It's where she began to settle into the mindset that she ultimately actualized on Madame X, becoming more political again and the desire to strip it all back, including removing the veneer of what "we" believed Madonna to be. She said something along the lines of feeling uneasy in the world seeing the hatred and injustices while she was touring her previous album, MDNA, and that we were heading towards something really bad if we didn't band together and make necessary changes (this was a year before Tr*mp, and... well) and she felt love was the solution, which she walked back on with "God Control": They say we need love, but we need more than this. Overall, the record is messy but endearing and serves as a great full circle moment with all the Easter eggs and references for fans who have been on this journey with her for the last few decades.
@Paadre824 жыл бұрын
It's a shame that we are probably never going to hear this album as she first intended give it to us. Because of the leaks, she had to rush the project, rework on several songs and cut other tracks. I mean, when you listen to the demos that have leaked, you realise how much potential there is, especially when you think that tracks like "Heaven" and "Queen" did not even make the final cut (and in my opinion they would have perfectly replaced some other songs that did). Anyways, very interesting review.

I absolutely love this album and I think it's Madonna's most overlooked album of her career. To me, it's her most personal album since Like a Prayer. It's almost like a sister album to erotica. My favorites are Devil pray, Joan of arc, heartbreakcity, body shop, wash all over me, messiah, and rebel heart. Idk why but Rebel heart (The song) makes me cry. I think it's one of Madonna's best songs and this album as well. Fun fact: Madonna actually produced "Hold tight" all by herself.

At the Rebel Heart tour she performed “Heartbreak City” followed by “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore”, that moment was amazing. One of the highlights of the tour. The performance and interaction with the dancer, the pain he’s giving her was raw and beautiful

Rebel Heart is by far the best of Madonna's three albums from the 2010s. The longest album of her career, it comes across as an amalgamation of the best of her artistic explorations. A potential swan song of an album, Rebel Heart is filled with pathos, existential introspection, sonic variety, and trademark uptempo fun. I still enjoy the reflective lyrical content, diverse production, and her vocals.

You should not forget her album "I'm Breathless" songs inspired by the film Dick Tracy. It really is a must :) Great review btw, Rebel Heart was first intended to be a dual record (one disc REBEL, the other disc HEART). Due to the songs being leaked before the release; things were re-thought (a shame really).

I'm a few days late to the party, but great job once again in analyzing Madonna, Eric! I've always had a soft spot for this album, because underneath a lot of the EDM-style production I could really hear just how sad and vulnerable Madonna was while working on this project (esp. with "Ghosttown", "Hold Tight", "Joan of Arc" and "Inside Out"). The album that came right before this one, "MDNA", was filled with a lot of anger due to a divorce she went through - and I feel like this was the time she finally got to a place of being able to mourn. A lot of people pair this album with "Erotica", and I can see why, but I actually pair it most with "Ray of Light". ROL was made about 15 years after Madonna first became famous when she became pregnant and therefore questioned everything she had done up until that point. Rebel Heart was made another 15 years later and I feel like this was another point where Madonna really paused and questioned a lot of her life's actions and reasons for being. I think for your next Madonna album "True Blue" would be a nice choice. (I can't wait for you to hear "Live to Tell"; it's one of the best songs she's ever written!)

PLEASE DO MDNA! It was seen as a failure and there's lots of fans who dislike it but I think it would be SO interesting to analyze it in the context of her first album in her 50s, post divorce, and the controversy involving Gaga. I think there is SO much to unpack and so many things that can be read both on the service level and underneath the artifice. Not a popular Madonna album but I know you can read between the lines and do it justice Eric!!!

I was really curious about your interpretation. At 25 songs released + 15 more demos leaked beforehand this record has as many interpretations as it's song count. I wish we could hear it as madonna originally intended as a double album as the flow is sometimes obviously contradicting. So - what you've added, I never caught on what you said how as album progresses she goes more humble in love songs. Great observation! This is why I always anticipate your reactions... I personally see this record as Madonna embracing her diminishing popularity, introspecting and repositioning herself in the world. Unfortunately with such level of stardom obviously there will some egocentricism in her persona, not so much in her music and expression, but it was there in different forms. That sudden drop in this last decade must have stung her, and I think it's understandable too. That's how I understand Wash all over me, I always felt she sings about the end of her, well not career, but end of what her career was. And it's even more blatantly obvious on Queen (originally super deluxe track) where she sings about Queen being slain as new generation comes. That nicely ties in into Madame X where she finally again sounds uninhibited and free of expectation as she honestly embraced not caring about being number 1 anymore, as much as simply being a musician and social activist. Sorry for the long post, hopefully you will react to True blue or Like a virgin next (perhaps best in chronological order), and thank you for another amazing reaction ❤️ looking forward to the next one!
@igoroslaj10824 жыл бұрын
Oh also this record was infamous with the leaks. I'm sure if it wasn't for the leaks it would sound totally different and the original Rebel heart demo was intended to be the first single. Some of the songs sounded so drastically different that it might be a cool idea for you to compare demo vs album version (Rebel heart, living for love, wash all over me, illuminati, inside out, messiah...)

Great reaction again Eric. I loved your commentary and facial expressions during "S.E.X.". Highly amusing. I see in the comments a "suggestion" to react to Madonna's tours in chronological order and I have to say that if you find the time I would love that. Other reactors just break up the tours into parts until they finish each one. I know you're a busy guy and need to follow what interests you personally as well as what gets you the views but I for one would love that. Thanks again for the great insight and work you put into these videos. Take care.

Great job as always. I love this album start to finish, but over the intervening years, it’s the ballads that keep me coming back. They’re all stellar. Also- You should write a book of collected essays on musical analyses that you’ve done. Deep dive discographies. You’re that good.
@amedeo294 жыл бұрын
Your facial expressions during S.E.X. = Priceless. 😂 That song is so awkward. My problem with this album is it didn’t need to be 19 tracks long. Several songs like SEX didn’t need to be there. This album doesn’t reinvent the wheel sonically, Madame X was a lot more adventurous in that sense, but what I love about this album is Madonna’s vocals. Highlights for me are Living For Love, Devil Pray, Joan Of Arc, Body Shop, Inside Out, Wash All Over Me, and Messiah. A lot of simple lyrics, but I enjoy the overall message and tone of the album. Resilience in the face of adversity. I also think it’s one of her better produced albums in recent years. It just sounds so polished. My biggest gripe with Madame X is that despite being quirky and different, it sounded poorly mixed, and her vocals processed poorly. MDNA, which is the album that proceeded Rebel Heart, is my least liked album, largely for the production, which sounds noisy/tin canny, and almost cheap. Revel Heart isn’t necessarily a classic, but for later career Madonna, it’s a very enjoyable entry.

I like Rebel Heart a lot. Most of it was so good. Living for Love, Unapologetic Bitch, Bitch I'm Madonna were standouts, while Ghosttown was quickly my favorite and got repeat plays right away. Always nice when you pop up on my suggested list. The feigned ignorance about S.E.X. was cute; also Madonna is correct (37:33) and your acknowledgement was perfect. Will have to do some catch up. I really liked this video. "Rebel Heart" is a wonderful and very special album for me. Madonna shows us, on the one hand, her human and fragile side, and on the other hand, her naughty and rebellious side. Please react to "True Blue" next, it's simply just the best Madonna album period, and her best selling to date (besides the Immaculate compilation), dah ! It's obvious it's the best. Sales can't lie. I don't understand why Rebel Heart wasn't embraced by the general public that much because to me, it's her best album since "American Life". It has a lot of songs and a lot of them range from good to very good. But it's always seen as a failure and to me the 3 main reasons are : 1 too many songs always confuse people. it's always better I think to have 10 or so songs and only choose the best ones than to drown people in 16 or something songs. People are so negative these days that the more songs you put out, the more you're up for criticism. 2 the wrong singles were chosen : Living For Love wasn't strong enough as a lead single and B*tch I'm Madonna wasn't worthy enough (everywhere I went at the time of release of this single, it's "Hold Tight" I was listenning on the radio, not "B*tch". Obviously the radios chose well, Madonna did not. She then released "Hold Tight" but it was too late because by then, the hype of the album was already down. and 3 "Addicted" : the best song of the album was only on the rare super deluxe edition. "Addicted" puts "Living For Love" to shame and should have been chosen as the first single instead.

I loved the leaked demos, which most of them are definitely much better in production than the final versions, and I'm fed up that she added this annoying synth drum march sound almost in every final mixes... unnecessary. And with the whole rushed production, the mastering is kinda bad as well (Holy Water low volume!). Great album overall with so much lost potential. btw, the Avicii demos of Wash All over Me and Rebel Heart are total masterpieces! For some reason, Wash All Over Me the message I got is that she is tired of this world and if the death comes for her, let her wash her away from all this earthly madness. Also, the transition between SEX and Messiah always makes me laugh because of the very odd and awkward song order choice.
