Love your reaction - especially that you appreciate all of the little touches that make this performance absolute PERFECTION. The subtle way she adapts the style of movement to fit the era is exquisite. I also love seeing a younger gay man going backwards to see this stuff. If this impacts you this much now, imagine what this was like 27 years ago! This was the latest in a long string of Madonna doing things that no one had even come close to doing in pop culture. I have loved this performance since MTV aired it live in 1990. M is the queen and her team at the time included director and choreographic genius Vincent Paterson. He created the entire Marie Antoinette concept, direction and choreography for this iconic performance and he rarely receives proper credit he deserves. So I felt compelled to share it with you. OMG I didn't know you hadn't seen it before! Isn't it epic? I remember seeing it when it was happening live and everyone was so excited to see this performance! We were all waiting for it because when Vogue was nominated she didn't come out but I think it only got best Direction at the time. So no one had seen her in the audience so it was the biggest reveal ever! My favorite MTV performance is Express Yourself the year before but this one is probably my second favorite!

Well worth the wait!! Loved every one of where you stopped the clip. The little nuances that would’ve been missed otherwise. I’ve watched it a million times, including it’s original air date and each time, I love it even more. These rehearsals must have been fierce! But my goodness, how they pay off. Like a virgin, Material Girl, Like a prayer, The sex book, Truth or Dare, Erotica, Justify my love, Vogue, Express yourself, The girlie show, the Blonde Ambition tour, Dick Tracy, The early 80’s VMA performance when she popped out of the cake and rolled around on the floor in her wedding dress, and this Marie Antoinette VMA performance (among countless other things) made Madonna the most brazen, controversial, legendary and emulated female pop star the world has ever seen!

omg i loved seeing your reactions to all of the amazing details. i have watched this performance probably hundreds of times over the course of my life (i'm 41) and it still gives me chills! i have to admit, sometimes lately in this post-Confessions era, i have to be reminded of what a fucking legend she is, and watching this is the reminder i needed. i live for this performance... one of her greatest live performances if not one of the best live performances in all of pop music, ever. period. the children need to be educated! you mentioned that your pre-Ray of Light knowledge is a bit hazy... does that mean you've never seen the Blonde Ambition tour in it's entirety? you need to watch that... the recording that was broadcast on HBO (the one where she has short hair, and not the high tight pony) is the best version and you can find it easily here on youtube. i'd love to see you make a reaction video for that!
