This is one of several Madonna singles that went nowhere on the charts, for reasons I will never understand. I loved it when I heard it on the Like a Virgin album in the mid-80s. It stood out so forcefully from the other great, but less dramatic songs on that album. I was like "whoa...she can nail a powerful ballad!" This peaked at #78 on the Hot 100 when released as a single in the 90s. wtf? Should have hit #1. The other super-mystery-bomb Madonna single was "Nothing Really Matters" which peaked at #93 off Ray of Light. That song is remarkable.

Actually both songs weren't written by Madonna, the Academy has always snobbed her, the proof was the exclusion from the nominees with Evita, despite she was already awarded with a Golden Globe for that role, that is considered a premonition of an Oscar. At the same time the ceremony takes advantage of a big name like hers in the list of performers, you can call it hypocrisy.
