This is such an underrated song. It was on the Like a Virgin Album. I remember playing it over and over and wondering why it wasn't on the radio! It sounds contemporary to this day in 2023 ! Actually both songs weren't written by Madonna, the Academy has always snobbed her, the proof was the exclusion from the nominees with Evita, despite she was already awarded with a Golden Globe for that role, that is considered a premonition of an Oscar. At the same time the ceremony takes advantage of a big name like hers in the list of performers, you can call it hypocrisy.

This is one of several Madonna singles that went nowhere on the charts, for reasons I will never understand. I loved it when I heard it on the Like a Virgin album in the mid-80s. It stood out so forcefully from the other great, but less dramatic songs on that album. I was like "whoa...she can nail a powerful ballad!" This peaked at #78 on the Hot 100 when released as a single in the 90s. wtf? Should have hit #1. The other super-mystery-bomb Madonna single was "Nothing Really Matters" which peaked at #93 off Ray of Light. That song is remarkable.

2022 listeners!? It's my 1st time hearing this Gem! Why do songs with real substance and meaningful lyrics get the less views? Lol and no that is not a shot at her dance songs. I love them. These types should be with the popular songs. It's just that it doesn't show up when you look for Madonna like the other ones that you usually see so so many people don't know to look for it unless you are a huge fan with the album to know to go listen to it. I am a big fan and always loved her songs but didn't dig deep into the albums because I listened to her on the radio and on here. I should start buying CDs though. Yes, it's a beautiful cover that was done a few years after Rose Royce, a disco group mostly known for their hit "Car Wash" which was featured in the movie of the same name. However, Madonna released it several years after she covered the song on her second album "Like A Virgin" which turned out to be her highest selling album ever. So most people were aware of the song when she released it as a single from her compilation album of ballads titled "Something to Remember". The song/video was released while she was busy filming the movie "Evita" in Argentina. She was pregnant with her daughter Lourdes at the time as well -- so the time constraints and her physical condition at the time and her need to keep the singles/albums rolling at her height of popularity produced this song and this video and that compilation album at that time. Plus, having lived/worked through the 1970s disco era influenced her art (song selection, sound, image, etc). Everything has a story in time with multiple contributing factors; a context; a history -- that explains, and provides depth beyond just the surface product. Given that, all respects to Rose Royce.
