The mantis is dropped into a weird tank with a ton of unfamiliar other bugs as big as itself, so its first response is to try to flee. It then begins experimenting with hunting, but frequently flees in fear of a counter-attack. Over time it becomes bolder because the locusts are total pushovers - they don't defend themselves in any way except to flap their wings a bunch while the mantis is chewing their faces off.
@thunderee6780 Жыл бұрын
Yep, you can tell it was trying to jump away too, but all was invain because of mantids strength, and the fact it was missing a leg as well.

The mantis looks full already you can see its abdomen is fairly full so its not as aggressive and fearless but in capitivity some mantis will keep eating until their abdomen is quite enlarged and can split. Mantids are always weary in a new environment until they settle into a good position for a while. I have bred several mantids and are familiar with their behaviour.

@@browning1245 I had an a to z book on terrariums that had a section on mantids. That was the most helpful but you can look online too and find info. For one, the mantis was thrown into a cage of over a dozen of the same species of bugs the size of itself. It doesn’t know whether they will all attack if it attacks one of their kind. Mantis’ also don’t normally attack out in the open, opting to wait for their pray and attacking without being seen. They do it for ants. If a mantis tries attacking an ant in the open, the rest of the colony would fight back. It goes to reason that it would be very cautious of this scenario playing out, especially with bugs the same size as it. Because it realized nobody even cared for the death of their own, it went about slaughtering its prey.

That was just fucking brutal man. I’ve seen people die, gore, but something about watching nature not give a shit is so humbling in the creepiest way. Imagine being hunted down, pinned, and a monster slowly eats your face into your brain.

We were growing brussels sprouts or broccoli one yr, & put a praying mantis on an aphid-infested plant. I watched as the mantis rested its foot on the plant & let aphids start climbing up its leg. After a bit, that mantis ate those aphids off its leg like one eats corn on the con. It was cool to watch.
