Just LOVE that last minimalist shot Mads - the use of negative space was perfect. One of my favourite ever shots was a minimalist shot of a lone tree in the white out of a snow storm.

I have not always given a lot of thought to minimalistic images, but have come to appreciate them a lot.They are often more powerful, and usually tell much more of a story, and I have begun to include them in my own work. Just like the church image you took, my eye immediately was drawn to the funnel like cloud in the background, which seemed to make the other clouds have this funnel like appearance that pointed direclty to the church. I felt as if the church while alone, could withstand any storm. I appreciate your willingness to take us along on your journey, and show us the amazing places you get to see.

Minimalism is something that is of interest to me Mads. I particularly liked the image as the drama of the clouds captured the mood of the image and when you looked at the church it symbolised a place to seek refuge and to feel safe

I particularly like the different interpretaions of the same photo. I'd personally more go with how drama and the church goes together :)

Strandakirkja was the first place I photographed when visiting Iceland. We were there at sunrise and this place just delivered one the best shots from my trip. The early November light just added so much drama and peacefullness at the same time to the scene, I just loved to be there. Minimalism is surely something I love in my photography as it just focuses on that one object, and nothing else. Great video Mads, brings back so much nice memories. It's like I was standing there again. Thank you for that moment !

Yes, I am with you. I love the epic and dramatic vistas. But just as much the smaller and more subtle minimalist scenes. Those are usually the ones I much rather hang up on my wall as they leave more up to everybody‘s interpretation. Lately I have found an increasing interest in getting more into intimate details like patterns and shapes often shot with long lenses.

I also love minimalism, Mads. It is the simplicity of the compositions when using minimalism that makes these kinds of images very strong. I totally agree with your comment about not using long exposure for this shot. It would have removed any texture from the sky, which you so beautifully caught in this church image. If you have not been to Canada yet, you should come. Canada is quite diverse as well, although it is much larger than Iceland, and takes more time to get around! LOL! Cheers from British Columbia!

Hi Mads I find I am getting more and more in to this kind of photography too, I know that when I first started I would always shoot the big vistas and get as much in the picture as I could, but nowadays I tend to go for the opposite and keep it as simple and clutter free as I can, and I much prefer my results I loved the picture with the Church, very simple but very effective and surely that is what a great image is all about, I would call it a photographers photograph, by that I mean an image that anyone really into photography would love to have taken, well done! regards Ian

Amazing photo, very large scale print worthy :) Thanks for sharing. I recently began trying to improve and take my photography serious although as a "hobby". Focusing on my interest for landscape and wildlife and i have a hard time finding a consistent style. I've come to realise that i need to take it slower and handpick my shots much more "harsher" when i publish them and even deem them as keepers in general. More quality over quantity if you will. I do like this type of minimalism shots quite a bit where you have a clear subject and try to minimise the distractions around it, it just feels so much more artistic and impactful and you get a sense of a story behind it. Granted it is not a easy job finding the compositions etc for it but i hope to be able to incorporate it in both landscape and wildlife photos from now on and make my gallery become less "all over the place" :) Thanks for the tips and inspiration!

I wasn’t there. Wish I were. In order to enforce simplicity and add some artistic value to what is already there, I guess I would try to find a dramatic juxtaposition between two or three objects. Of course you did that with the church and the sky, but how about the church and part of the statue? Oh, if only you had had a ladder at 6:25! Perhaps a white cross and the church (focus stack). Do any of the walls or fences lead to the church? How about the path?
@MadsPeterIversen6 жыл бұрын
Some of them do I guess. I think you can't get it more simple than this. Adding drama with a juxtaposition creates more complexity I guess? :) And I guess you did see the entire video and the part with the path?
@stuartschaffner97446 жыл бұрын
Well, you wanted some alternative opinions... First, the term Minimalism comes from the art world, so I am assuming that we are thinking here of using photography to create new art, as opposed to documenting old art. I would say that in this case one rather talented architect created a highly functional yet beautiful art object: the church and its immediate grounds. To just take a well-crafted image of the church and grounds and take it along one of its primary axes of symmetry is, I claim, an act of documentation, not a new work of art. You need an artist's version of Occam's Razor: make the work as simple as possible and still be new art, but no simpler. Your really nice piece of minimalist art at 9:53 succeeds, IMHO, because you carefully selected from among large numbers of random sky patterns one that contained a large triangle. This mirrors the roof shape from the front of the church. There's also that funnel-cloud thingy that looks like a small upside-down copy of the church roof and steeple. So, now you have a composition of a geometrical object and two geometrical abstractions from that shape. The geometrical arrangement of the three points of interest is itself another triangle. Speaking of Pop Culture, that's a lot more art than Warhol's Campbell Soup Cans. The image of the church in a primary geometrical alignment with a curvy leading-line path up to it is, sorry, not new art either. As you pointed out, this picture has already been taken. Similarly, a picture of one white cross in the foreground, in its primary orientation, with the church in the background, in its primary orientation is also just a snapshot. However, the cross is build up from rectangles whereas the church is constructed from rectangles and triangles, is a source of lots of possibilities. Hope this isn't coming across as negative. I am writing all this because I like your work, a lot.

Thanks. How do you keep the subject (as in church) in place, as it appears to not move while everything else moves.

I am not sure what you mean?
@autumngreenleaf33905 жыл бұрын
I think I understand now. When you are pointing the lens at the point of interest, such as the church, you keep it seemlingly in the same place because everything else is a distance away from that point of interest. This is what I think is happening. This makes the church seem to stay almost unmoved while everything else will seem to move more and more depending on how far away it is from the point of interest. Those things which are near the point of interest will appear to move less than the things which are farther from it. @@MadsPeterIversen

It works - I suppose it depends on the scene?

I guess that's always how it is with photos? :)

We have 1 day of travel in Iceland in August this year. We will have a car, what do you recommend we see? Our Air BNB is just to the West of Reykjavik.

For one day? And if you're into photography: Reykjanestá, Strandarkirkja, Selfoss, Skogafoss, Vik area (if you get up early and spend all day you can make it ;))

Fine art photography is not a style of composition or subject matter, but how the photo is treated afterwards (I.e. printing method, any textures, matting and framing).

When presented with a lot of great images- I tend to be drawn to those that use minimalism effectively. That having been said I personally struggle to capture scenes in ways that simplify the scene. Often I'm only able to visit a given area once and get caught up in capturing everything- the grandeur of what I'm seeing. Even in the moment I know I should work harder to find the simplicity within a complex scene but I often get caught in the trap of trying to capture everything. I believe it takes discipline, patience, maturity, and practice to be able to be in an awe inspiring, grand environment and still create simple images that focus on a given detail and leave something to the imagination of the viewer.

fatbaldandhappy yes, I agree very much. I often find it hard to zoom into details. An ongoing challenge to myself is to find simplicity and order in a grand view of chaos :)
