Snowdonia in Northern Wales is perfect for epic landscape photography. If you manage to get some "bad" weather with showers and low clouds you're in luck for creating some spectacular photos. In this episode we'll visit the Lone Tree, The Boat House at Llyn Ogwen, A view towards the mountain Tryfan and I'll tell the story about my hikes to the top of the Glyders. We will start out at Tintern Abbey in Southern Wales. As always the video is full of tips and tricks in regard to composition, light and practical stuff related to photography. In many ways this video could work as a landscape photography tutorial.

Fascinating adventure and story. A bit more than a hike I would say! I have not seen the Glyders in any photo vlogs, glad you made me aware of it. Sophie must be in very good shape, you too! Hats off to you. I don't know why operators such as those at the abbey get so freaked with photographers, especially tripods. Really enjoying your vlogs and experiencing your photographic journey. Oh, good music too,

I've only recently in the last 6 months started my photography journey, a bit ago subscribed to your channel going through a lot of videos and I find this Gem. only half way through the video and loving it so far. I live about 20 minutes from Snowdonia and watching something so personal and picking up tips along the way has been very enjoyable! Love the vid and also good pronunciations of the places a lot of people find Welsh very difficult! Thank you for doing what you do.

Terrific episode in your Britain series, really enjoyed the longer video. Snowdonia is just so hard to photograph, spent a week there last May and didn't get a single good shot. Have to vote for #5 this week, such a superb landscape photograph.

It’s great to see you enjoying Snowdonia, which is my stomping ground. I think you did exceptionally well those conditions which looked more challenging than usual! You would love Snowdonia in mid winter after a snowfall! The Glyders are always unpredictable - I’ve had a blinding blue sky after a snowfall with visibility around five miles and also I’ve been up there in June with visibility around 50 metres…

Welcome to Britain and some classic Brittish weather! lol I totally get what you are saying about the bad weather. I just spent a few days in the Lake District and I had pretty well nothing but grey, overcast weather. I haven't processed the images yet, but I'm sure I'll be able get something from my time. I thought your images were stunning though. They really captured the mood and grandure of the area. I also thought your tips on mountain safety were important to highlight. I follow many of them myself and I was glad I had a head torch on Sat when it was almost pitch black when I descended from a hill in the Lake District. Anyway so many good images to pick from, but I'm going with number 5 this time. I love a big mountain view, but additional points for making it work so well in bad weather!

I know what you mean about it being dangerous there. A few weeks ago I was in the same area as where you took the photos opposite Tryfan, climbing up to the lake at the top behind Pen Yr Ole Wen, and when I got there, I slipped over, bruised my knee and injured my shoulder and had to make the descent back down to the car in quite a bit of pain. It could have been a lot worse, though! I've never been up to the Glyders because I have really bad knees, but do want to get up there one day. Maybe next summer - I don't think there's going to be enough daylight for me to do it this year now.

Hey Mads, loved the 30 minutes landscape video I just watched. Great to see you don't mind the harsh weather to go out, unlike my wife, I love those weather situations, but after seeing the footage I would go for the hike to the Caste of Winds in an other time of the year I guess. For my fav of the week : I'm in doubt between 3 and 5, but I will go for nr. 5. Love the setting, composition, the mood. Seeing the story behind the shot makes it even better. The abbey, would finish last this week for me. I noticed that you always talk about the "leading lines" in your videos. It is something I'm paying more attention to, since watching your videos, so thanks again for the inspiration. See you next week !

You are very welcome Frederic! I'm very happy you liked the video. I think September is for for Castle of the Wind, but you have to be aware of the weather. Some snow might as I said be very nice too, but I think the location performs best during during sunset/sunrise :)

Really enjoyed this longer format Mads! I know it's significantly more work to produce, but I wish all your videos were as long (or longer haha). Also, you just made me add another location to my bucket list, and what an amazing one it looks like! :) Picture #5 is definitely my favourite, the thunderous atmosphere can be felt just by looking at the image, it's very powerful. The composition is just right all around. I'd even go as far as saying it's one of my favourite image of yours! Picture #6 would be my second pick, being an immense Lord of the Ring fan, this is a pretty compelling composition. The moodiness, the unforgiving rock formations, the striking scale, and the use of the trail as a leading line all make for an absolutely epic image. Picture #2 would be my third pick. The minimalist and dramatic approach is very well executed in this case. You got some amazing clouds there that really made the composition even better. Picture #4 (and the other picture of the waterfall/stream going towards Mt. Tryfan) would be tied for my fourth pick. As for picture #5, I really like the atmosphere. And there's some brilliant leading lines with this strong foreground. But I find the vertical format doesn't truly represent the power and emotion of that moment. Pictures #1 and #3 would be my last picks, they are very good images don't get me wrong, but if I compare them to #2-4-5-6 (which are absolutely stunning), they fall just a little short (you set the bar higher everytime haha!).

Absolutely stunning view towards mountain Tryfan, I like the last one the best. I also found that long exposures with around 1/2s shutter time work best for waterfalls and the like, it's the strands of water that look fantastic. By the way, if you find bad weather favorable, north-west Germany is a perfect location, I should consider myself lucky every day ;)

I can feel with you. I made the same tour but was suprised by heavy clouds 50 metres before the top. But at the same day I was on Crib Goch for sunrise. It was the most epic scene I ever witnessed. And it's only a 2 mile hike one direction (but quite difficult the last half mile).

Just stumbled upon a quote by Albert Watson regarding his efforts made to shoot the old Man of Storr: "“I deliberately went in October and November because I was hoping for bad weather - and of course I got it. “I find blue sky with white fluffy clouds deadly when it comes to creating a powerful landscape and I was looking for wind and rain and mist.” /End Quote. I thought this fits perfectly to your observations.

Hey Mads, what an inspiring video, thanks. I have this year ticked off one of my long time Bucket List locations on Skye, The Old Man of Storr and while I hear you about Snowdonia I don't think I can agree it out buckets Skye. However, inspired by this video I am going to test your view and have just booked for a long weekend (24th to 27th Nov) in the area to get the Lone Tree and some of the surrounding area. My wife and I are not as young and fit as you and your travelling companion (Sophie?) so we won't be trying the high country but will surely try to do justice to your excellent showpiece video. Again, thanks for the inspiration.

15.35 fast & slow great! Then I thought of Tolkien, Mordor, Before you mentioned the later about of the Castle of the Winds. superb video of the area, I found the boat house was not quite right (a little modern) for the back ground. have passed it on to amember of my family who is into photography visiting N/Wales in September

Number 5 is my favourite. I have climbed Tryfan many times and in all weathers and it is always rewarding. Love the moody sky contrasting with the smooth water of Lyn Ogwen. The foreground stream nicely balances with the dark mountain. All of your photos have a dark foreboding quality which strikes a chord in me. Thank you.

Do you think that Snowdonia's Lonely Tree is the long lost sister of New Zealand's "That Wanaka Tree"?! If only we could have them be pen pals... Then it wouldn't be so lonely.

I feel like this should be shown to Brits as an information film. So many families head up with their kids, wearing sandals and t-shirts thinking it's just like walking through the local park! No kidding, I've been been up in these mountains in ful winter conditions with ice axe and crampons yet passed families with their kids all in trainers and with umbrellas in hand. Crazy. Also, I've walked these places at all times of year and in all conditions but didn't bother taking a proper camera with me. Really wish I could rewind and take my camera. Hard to get out now as I have a young family, but will definitely take all my kit next time!

So glad you enjoyed Snowdonia. It's my favourite place to go and the place that got me hooked into landscape photography two years ago. I'm lucky to live a reasonably close distance to the park ☺ I'm just waiting for the snow to arrive to go back this year. One of my favourite videos you've produced so far mads.

Great vlog Mads and cracking images, I've been to the Ogwen valley many many times though it's hardly in my backyard either. A three hour drive from home and I'm there. A little less than your travel time I guess 🤣. I planned to spend a night on top of the Gilders last year and catch both sunrise and sunset from the castle of the winds in one visit but it never materialized due to low cloud and rain forecast each time so I'll certainly make an effort to do it this year. With a bit of luck (and careful planning) might possibly get a cloud inversion too which would be epic. Keep up the good work Mads and look forward to seeing your future vlogs, more importantly stay safe.

Mads, Loved this video, one of the things I love about photography, is the challenge of the shot in some cases. I see you doing this all the time to get that shot. I love the locations you have been to, love watching your videos and seeing the compositions you are able to walk away with. Love the music you put with your videos! Extremely creative. Not sure if you even realized that you created a quotable moment here. I will be using this and attributing it to you from now on. "When the conditions are as they are, the art is the work with it, or around it, and adjust to the scene." I love that. Can't wait for Covide to get under control to get out there. I have a trip to Japan in April! here is Hoping!!! Thank you for this video Mads, great as usual.!

My playground 🙃 You’ve shown our mountains in all it’s bad weather in such a great way. I agree with windy castle (it’s what my family call it) there are no real ways to show it’s glory in an image, I’ve tried. I have been up there countless times in all weather including snow / ice and it’s tough - well done for trying again. Great shots anyway, all good 👍🏼

Normally, I'd straighten the perspective in the exterior photos of the church (I can't spell abby). However. I like the uncorrected low level view you have here. I don't know if you corrected all the perspective on interior stills or not. But in any case, you do great work. * Normally, I shoot moving water either at a fast enough shutter speed to freeze it, or slightly slower to get a little motion blur. I haven't tried stacking two images to of frozen and motioned blurred to see what I get. I have s stream I'm planning to shoot a lot, so I'll try that to see what happens.

A great video for a number of reasons. Not only is this about photography, but also what natural treasures we have in the UK.
