She was my Aunt Mae & oh how I miss her. When I was a little girl she used to come & entertain at my birthday parties. Later in life we would be out to dinner & she was always so sweet to fans that would come up to her for an autograph. Loved that woman so.

Thank you, she was quite amazing. Kids in school would also doubt until they came to my birthday parties & there she was. It's whatever. Many don't realize she was also Aunt Bethany in Christmas Vacation & one of her last roles in New York Stories with Woody Allan. When I asked her about her filming in NY Stories she said she had such fun & "ohhhhh that Woody Allan, what a nice boy".

@@ariana9784 The girl you are referring to her name was Lil Esther also Baby Ester. She was not the Inspiration behind Betty Boop. Helen Kane and Clara Bow were. The reason Helen Kane lost her suit against Max Fleischer is because he proved she copied her singing style from a little girl named Baby Ester. Helen Kane sued Max Fleischer over him copying her singing style and because he showed a film of Baby Ester singing, she lost her case. Look up information before posting!

Mae mentioned being excited about making new Popeye cartoons and I just found she auditioned for the role of Olive Oyl in Hann Barbera's All New Popeye, produced the same year as this interview, and was replaced by someone else! Imagine having a woman of Mae's talent, who not only originated the role but showed clearly in this interview that she was as good then at the voice as she ever was and passing her up!

She was also Aunt Bethany from Christmas Vacation movie, but incidentally and sadly, would die from complications of Alzheimer's in 1998 at the age of 91. And her character was very senile and absent-minded, that was a funny movie but nothing funny at all, which Mae ironically, would end up like her character. RIP Mae Questel, boop-boop-de-boop, we love you :)

Although I only worked with Mae one time doing a commercial for Ensure, she was a lovely lady inside and out, and everyone in the business loved her. Cyndi Lauper uses her "Mae Questal" voice onstage, but her natural pitch is much lower.
