Constance and Joan Bennett's grandfather was black. Carol Channing was black. There have been numerous black people especially in that era who were passing for white. Regardless what race Mae West was she was my favorite actress. She was witty, clever, smart, attractive, courageous, and funny as heck. Her one liners were iconic.❤

It was actually found that the thing about Joan Bennett grandfather was not true, and Carol channing's father wasn't black either. People just misinterpret those details. Instead of saying the truth about Carol Channing‘s father, which was that he was said to be multi racial at one time, people want to say he was black. He wasn’t. He was just as white as he was black, if he was black at all. And that’s been debated. Carol even told Wendy Williams in 2010 that she thinks her mother was just joking with her, especially since her father had absolutely no black traits. But if Carol was black, it was only a quarter, and she was mostly white. As for the Bennett sisters, that was found to be false. I don’t know why people try to make this more than it is. It’s like they find out somebody maybe, just maybe has a little bit of black in them, and suddenly they’re black. Well, these people are more white than black, but because they’re so great, white people can no longer claim them? That’s not right.

I have never heard of Constance and Joan Bennett. I looked them up and they are beautiful ladies and finding out about them will be the rabbit hole that I climb down tonight. Thanks!

West is credited with saying, "You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough".

I love Mae West. If she had Black genes, then I say that’s what added to her allure.

Absolutely! Mae West's allure was a mix of charisma, wit, and a dash of mystery. If a hint of Black genes added to her captivating charm, then consider it just another layer of her irresistible appeal. As they say, a touch of diversity never hurt anyone, especially when it comes to the enchanting Mae West!

The US Navy personal flotation device was named Mae West, and still is. In that sense, she is immortal.

In World War II, said flotation devise called 'mae west' [lower case letters] made it into the Oxford English Dictionary- which led Miss West to quip 'I'm in 'Who's Who' and I know 'what's what' but this is the first time I've ever been in a dictionary!'LOL

Once again, my question is why does color matter ? It was HER that was MAGNIFICENT and Her race nor her ethnicity enters into it tbh.
@AgeOfVintage5 ай бұрын
Absolutely! In the grand spectacle of her talent, race and ethnicity were just supporting acts to the main attraction: Mae West herself. After all, greatness knows no color, only the spotlight she commanded so effortlessly.

Didn't she single handedly save a film studio that was failing, who cares about past and colour she was one hell of a performer.
@AgeOfVintage5 ай бұрын
Absolutely! Her remarkable talent and determination speak volumes. Regardless of past actions or background, her ability to single-handedly revitalize a failing film studio is a testament to her unparalleled skills and commitment.

Saw her in person twice during the '70s. She had an aura about her and you couldn't take your eyes off of her.

If it's true that one of her ancestors was black while the others were white then, West was neither white nor black. She was bi-racial. GET IT RIGHT!!

Well, if history has taught us anything, it's that labels rarely capture the full spectrum of who we are. Mae West was a force of nature, defying categorization with her talent and charisma. So, you could say she was beyond classification, simply iconic.

Mae West was a burlesque queen in her time, she wrote her own shows, they were filmed into movies, she starred in these films, and because of her performance style, it inspired the film ratings system which in the end killed her career. Thumbs down for this video from me.

Ah, the irony of fame and fortune! Mae West's trailblazing spirit certainly left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry, for better or worse. It's a tale as old as Hollywood itself-pushing boundaries only to face the consequences. But hey, at least she went out in style, leaving us with timeless classics to enjoy!
