Yeah, the members of the royal family still reside there. That’s the difference between Indonesia and Malaysia. Malaysia is still a monarchy and the sultans live lavishly, while Indonesia is a republic: all the former royalties are now considered commoners just like the rest of us. Aside from Yogyakarta, where the king is also the governor.

unfortunately, in indonesia especially in java, a lot of chinese buildings (house, shophouse) were demolished by the owner, even the owners are chinese, they don't care about their culture and heritage. I think chinese buildings in java are more beatifull than outside java. for example : chandra naya building in jakarta, tjie lam tjay building in semarang, darussalam hotel in pasuruan and old houses in lasem.

You're right Nick. This is one of the better preserved kapitan homes in Indonesia. I own a book titled "Chinese Houses of Southeast Asia" by Ronald G. Knapp, A. Chester Ong, and Wang Gungwu that I highly recommend if you're into this kind of architecture. The book features almost a dozen Chinese Indonesian homes. Of those shown, the ones I believe to be the best preserved are Tjong A Fie Mansion - Medan, Siek Family Home (Prasada Mandala Dharma) - Parakan, and Khouw Family Manor - Jakarta. Others shown were Oey Djie San Plantation Home - Tangerang, Tjioe Family Residence (St Maria De Fatima Catholic Church) - Jakarta, Tan Tiong Ie Home - Semarang, Kwik Djoen Eng Mansion (Institut Roncalli) - Salatiga, Liem Compound - Lasem, Han Family Ancestral Hall - Surabaya, and Han and Thalib Residence Pasaruan. These homes tend to draw inspiration from European styles, Chinese styles, and Indonesian styles, reflecting the different people groups officer/kapitan families had to interact with. The book also features some homes in China built by returnees from Indonesia. My only critique of the book is that its Indonesian section is evidently Java-centric. Being descended from transmigrants to Java, I know for a fact that Chinese officer homes outside Java were just as beautiful at their peak as those in Java. But after centralisation of the economy and polity in Java following Indonesian independence, the emigration from the outer islands to Java and overseas was just too great. As someone descended from Chinese officers outside Java, my own ancestral homes couldn't be maintained. The land was either sectioned off or sold off entirely. Few relatives visit the homes regularly, and even fewer still live in the vicinity. I hope to revitalise my ancestral homes one day. But it's a daunting undertaking. It requires a lot of skilled efforts to revitalise old structures, and also difficult to make profitable when you take into account the regions they're in. Unfortunately not many of my relatives are passionate enough to pour money into what they see as a bygone era.

It's weird that the old Sultan's palace seems less grandeur than the businessman house. Probably with all the souvenirs shop at the palace. While the businessman mansion feels tidy and clean.

The tour guide did a good job. That area is probably one of the most interesting in the city, as a few old buildings survive, but unfortunately Medan didn't do a great job of preserving its architectural heritage. Yeah you aren't going to have much luck trying to get off the trail by asking a becak driver to take you around as they will just assume a tourist wants to see all the usual spots. Even if you were fluent in Indonesian they probably wouldn't get why you want to see that kind of thing. You need to poke about by yourself for that which you probably don't have time for. I don't think you'll find any hidden gems, but you might stumble across a few things of some interest. Good to have wheels - even just a push bike - but then again, it is rainy season. Good luck.
