I like the jig you made for cutting off the end of the peg. I've fitted Knilling Perfection pegs on one of my fiddles and I want to try these on another one. These look easier to install, but the Perfection pegs weren't that bad either. They thread into the wood.

I purchased the Killing ones. I prefer their design as it is literally wood. And, as the mechanism is in the shaft and not in the head it also has the same shape as traditional pegs. So, they just fit better to a traditional design. Noone will realise. The missing finetuners are the only hint. Meanwhile the killing ones are available in rosewood too. Now I just need to wait for my violin to be done and set up by my luthier. Btw: I went for those pegs because I am frustrated about the tuning of the violin. Especially in winter. I am just a beginner and my violin is not an old masters violin where tuning is said to be smooth and easy. With my violin it's pushing squeezing and hoping it's not loose after one second. That said it's been set up by a luthier so he did the best he can do. He told me that it will become better with tuning more often. Basically a lot more often than I do ;) As I am a beginner I prefer to spend the time for practicing instead of tuning. And I don't want to be held off from practising by the thought of having to tune it for 10 minutes.
@RockStarOscarStern6343 жыл бұрын
I think all Acoustic Violins, Violas, and Cellos would benefit from these Mechanical Pegs cause they turn more smoothly, meaning you don't need fine tuners on the tailpiece. The Guitar style Machine Screw head tuners are a better match for Electric and Acoustic-Electric instruments since they sound best through an amp.
@pcastonguay10 ай бұрын
I use these Wittner finetune pegs on my violin. They are easier to make tuning adjustments and much better than conventional pegs that have a tendency to stick and slide.

Should I buy WFtunep. for Cello? or perhaps the Viol (da braccio) ones are enough long considering the extra amount lenght which should be sewed for adaptation? for me the wight is the most important as I feel comfortable during practicing. so the question is do they weight heavier than normal pegs? I think the exact wight should be mentioned because you don't want to add extra wight to your instrument! I know that you don't need fine tuners on the tailpiece anymore and this is an advantage to the wight but you have 4 pegs and if they whited more it will make a difference. please Kimon share your thought regarding the weight!
@maestrokimon4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I don't have new sets of these pegs so I can't tell you the precise weight, but I weighted the pegs that I have on the instrument (already cut on measurement) but they are nearly the same length. Wittner: 10gr, Knilling 8gr, traditional ebony peg: 5gr. Keep in mind that by placing the mechanical pegs you can get rid of the finetuners and their weight. I hope I could help you.
@BasimMatar4 жыл бұрын
@@maestrokimon thanks for your reply! Well that means more 5 gr difference. So 5x4 wil be 20 gr heavier. Even if you get rid of the fine tuners the weight is more. So I believe if it's regarding the weight there is no any advantage correct me if I'm wrong.
@maestrokimon4 жыл бұрын
in my opinion adding 20gr to the instrument (that is les that 5% of the tota weight) will not change the sound dramatically. Also, don't forget that adding weight isn't necessarily a bad thing. if you think that these pegs will help you tune then I would definitely try them.
@rofo21074 жыл бұрын
@@maestrokimon I'd put these on cheap/school/student instrument. I'd not put them on professional/master level instrument just because they are plastic and I doubt that plastic parts are conducting sound the same way as ebony, rosewood etc. I think on professional/master level instrument the best option is still one fine tuner integrated in tailpiece for E string. Maybe I'd change my mind if they somehow are able integrate them into ebony wood but these would be incredibly expensive :)

Another brand of geared violin pegs is Pegheds. I had them installed on my Magic Fluke Cricket (Travel Fiddle) when I ordered it. Mya-Moe Ukuleles used to offer them as an option. Here’s a link to the old owners (now retired) video on how to install them. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYibgKtun5x4eMk. Chuck Lee Banjos also often come standard with these pegs. I’m going with Wittner in the future because I like their look and because I believe they have an 8 to 1 gear ratio. Pegheds are (I think) 4 to 1. Knilling (“Perfection”) also makes geared violin pegs. Thanks!

Maybe for instruments with fragile (Royce Burt pointed out in one of his videos) pegheads or for those Fiddles used for live performance/Jams (Folk/Rock). Fine tuners on the tailpiece negate having to use the pegs very often. Thanks!
