Great video. Really appreciate you dive into details. I'm PA, animator at Compulsion Games and wanted to add a comment regarding facial capture. It's often the case with Behind the Scenes or Breakdown videos, the animators' work is left aside when it comes to the facial capture aspect. Facial capture isn't magic, it does not output "close" results you can plug in the engine... right away. Facial capture, as good as it can be, always needs a significant amount of rework, of "remodeling" by the animators in order to mimick the intended performance (often, the data is noisy, and too close from reality to be interesting artstistically). Usually, animators use the output data from the motion capture session paired with live action footage to better recreate the actor's performance. Often, it's about exagerrating the data (ie : pushing this eyebrow a bit more up, toning down this jaw motion, etc...), creating visually more interesting transitions between expressions, more iteresting facial poses, smoothing the overall data to create a great facial animation that is true to the original performance, and to the animation principles. The Last of Us Part II would ge a good example : facial animation in the game isn't realistic... though it is believable (which, paired with great lighting, texturing, and general cutscene direction leads to think it's "realistic"). When it comes to motion capture (be it facial or body), the capture itself is 50% of the work, and the animator's another 50%. It really is a collaboration between directors (including animation directors) on set with actors, and later animators enhancing the performance and putting in engine.
@LiTTleGaBi214 жыл бұрын
there is so much more layers to a motion capture animation than we could think uh, that is amazing also, would the « clean up » I’ve seen online be the step where you manage the output data from the mocap session and animate on top?

agreed - modern sensibilities are generally a - extremely short attention span b - will dismiss a game as complete crap if there are any issues impeding on their amusement c - will become frustrated and irate if the gameplay isn't familiar enough or if they get stuck game studios know this well and cater to these modern sensibilities, which was not the case in the gaming culture of 2002 when the original was released. As evidenced by the racing level and overall difficulty of the original (going up hills, traffic infractions, tricky pixel perfect long distance shooting) the original developers weren't concerned with these things and that's a large part of the game's charm.

"But also a brutal challenge once you understand the rules" I would argue you don't understand the rules if you say it's a brutal challenge. The rules are that enemies have magazines of set sizes. Guns have distinct sounds. You are meant to take cover and count the number of shots before you make a move on the enemy if you don't want to take damage or die. If you run into a room with 3 enemies like in your footage you are going to lose a lot of health and possibly die because you are not playing by the rules. Also the enemies with Tommy guns can run out of ammo and then have to switch to their pistols. This is another strategy you can use to your advantage at the cost of not getting ammo for the Tommy gun from their bodies. The hand to hand combat being completely reworked is a welcome change as long as the enemies don't just stand around as you beat them up 1 by 1 which they most likely will.
@artey66714 жыл бұрын

I don't see how turning it into a cover shooter is an improvement. Cover shooters feel more clunky and dated than ever. Bring back the classic Max Payne style combat for a change.
@Rroff24 жыл бұрын
Until they messed with it in the 1.8 patch onwards The Division 1 did it well IMO getting a good balance of cover shooter and FPS elements that felt good to play with. Sadly they messed with it later on to try and solve issues in multiplayer and the result is it now feels stiffer to play and more times when your movement and what the game allows you to do movement wise doesn't match up which isn't fun. If it had an implementation like (original) TD1 I'd be happy with that - it can be more immersive for cinematic type gaming experiences.
@funsohng4 жыл бұрын
Max Payne is literally a game about flying through bullets in John Woo-style gun-fu action. Mafia is very different from that, it's not a game that rewards aggressive gameplay like Max Payne for very obvious reasons, and some sort of a working cover system would be an improvement (provided that it is actually a good one) because you spend a lot of time trying to shield yourself from fire anyway in the original. So a cover system would just make that into a working mechanic, instead of a clunky weird crouch/hugging the wall strat that breaks the immersion. As someone who loved the original back in the day, I don't mind if the cover system is done well (I didn't mind it at all in Mafia 2, though I never played Mafia 3). Only thing I really hope they go back to the original regarding gunplay is how reloading, ammo count and cartridges work.

The "dated" mechanics are actually what made the gameplay, albeit difficult, engaging for me. And I played it only recently. It's nonsensical to turn this into a cover shooting snooze fest. The original kept you on your toes and that made it very immersive. I actually disagree that modern gamers prefer cover based shooting, this is just a blatant misunderstanding from the dev team on what made the original good and failing to take the spirit of it to the modern era.
@777malkavian4 жыл бұрын
I'm genuinely curious, what third-person shooter games don't have a cover system? It feels like an obvious thing to do in a shootout, so what is the alternative?
@eternalreturnal4 жыл бұрын
@@777malkavian I guess when i use the term "cover based shooting" I'm also implying that it includes the same style of level design and certain enemy AI behavior that those kinds of modern games have. Where the cover is 100% effective and you only have to time when the enemy heads will pop up, instead of having to keep moving and having to be spatially aware of the environment. On top of this, the OG Mafia didn't have a minimap or checkpoints (that im just gonna assume this has) which made death really costly. Arguably this was more annoying than anything, but i still appreciated how much going through every door in a building full of enemies was incredibly tense and fun because of it. Just my two cents
@Cenot4ph4 жыл бұрын
@@777malkavian that's your lack of imagination, you don't need an assisted cover mechanic. You can duck behind an obstacle, there cover. If you want to shoot you have to manually move side ways or you stand up and shoot. It's all manual iteraction which makes for much more engaging shootouts. Instead now I have a cover system I dont have to do any of this. It's so boring

@@Cenot4ph but in this case in a modern game you need actual procedural animations when ducking behind cover. This has nothing to do with "imagination".

@@777malkavian everything to do with it. The ducking animation is generic, it's not meant to cling to objects. That's the whole purpose of it. When you stand near a box and you crouch, do you cling to the box? No. Hopefully you now understand the issue with this "modernization"
