Lea yeah, it doesn’t relate to Mafuyu at all, but those were his last words to him. Obviouslt it’s not his fault, but that’s generated the worst guilt anyone could experience. He blames himself for his death, that conversation and argument is just an excuse to justify it in his mind, so he can blame himself instead of realizing the horrifying fact that he died for no reason at all.

Something i've just realized, after watching the anime like 4 times, was when Mafuyu finished singing the final chorus and then looked at Uenoyama, smiling. That scene hit me way more than the kissing scene because Mafuyu really liked Ue, but he would also see Yuki's face on Ue. All those flashback moments with Yuki everywhere Mafuyu walked show how much he missed his boyfriend. But after that final chorus, he finally sees Ue as he is, his real face and not Yuki's, his new friend and the guy he now loves, symbolizing he finally got in terms with his past and accepted his present ❤

I have a theory that Mafuyu's scream at 1:40 wasn't originally part of the song he wrote, but when the memories of him and Yuki started rushing to his head, then finally their last moments when he asked Yuki to die for him, all of the regret, frustration and anger he bottled up poured out into the scream with all of the other overwhelming emotions he felt on stage

I didn’t cry during this whole anime until this song. It’s like every single emotion that had been building up for so long hit me like a brick all at once and I started sobbing as soon as Mafuyu screamed. That hit me to my very core. I had been sad for Mafuyu and Yuki but it hadn’t really hit until this moment, it was almost freeing but in such a heartwrenching way, at least that’s what it made me feel, and now I think Mafuyu felt too. If you look closely at Mafuyu’s flashback, you will notice that Yuki is very expressive and Mafuyu has such a neutral expression all the time. And the only time he expresses how he feels was when he yelled at Yuki, also the last string that ended Yuki’s life (technically, that’s what Mafuyu tells himself) and I think it’s such a genius way to tell the viewers how Mafuyu has been feeling all this time. He’s afraid to show his emotions because when he does, he either being hit by his father, or worse, pushed his boyfriend/best friend to end his life. That is also why this performance means so much to him because for the first time ever, nothing goes wrong after he pours his heart out to everyone and especially to Uenoyama.

Edit: spoiler warning The line about partially melted snow is SO perfect. "Yuki" means "snow" so Yuki's lasting impact on Mafuyu's life is perfectly represented by unmelted snow in the shade. Then the shade represents the sadness Mafuyu's felt since Yuki's death, so the snow (Yuki's presence) won't disappear because Mafuyu's still holding onto his shade/darkness (sadness). Also Yuki died in the winter. In previous episodes' intros Yuki's face is blurred out but in the intro to this episode, his face is finally revealed RIGHT as the OP song has the line "spring, summer, fall, winter" This anime is wonderful and here I am crying at 4 AM
