Hey Mr. Ruso, I agree with 99% of your technique and reasoning for it. However, the 1% I am having a problem with is the decision to wear the New England PATRIOTS t-shirt. Lol. Sorry, but I'm a Seahawks fan. But I'm a big fan of your show and your NRA commentaries. Keep up the great work and HOORAH sir. Web

The late Paul Gomez always said "if someone gets between your wrist and your shoulder, they have more control of the weapon than you do". Changing magazines at full extension may be a hair faster on the competition range, but in a fight you want as much control of the weapon as possible.

Excellent technique. I learned this by watching Travis Haley. To me this is the best all around way to perform a fast, yet more precise reload. I just took a pistol class and the instructor was telling us to perform the reload like your first example with the gun out in front. It was a Un natural feeling and I felt very exposed and weak, just like you mentioned. I'll keep performing my reloads in my work space, as it's now a habit and muscle memory for me. Thx again for the detailed instruction!

Good advice brother. I’m left handed, so unfortunately I have to pull back in the slide because almost zero pistols are fully ambidextrous. So I’m at a disadvantage there. I have trained the way you’re saying in this video. The only thing I haven’t done is to grab the slide from the front end like you are. I have always pulled from the back. I just tried grabbing it your way, and I realized how much faster I can get my support hand back into its position compared to when I grabbed it from the back. Great job, and thank you. I did 10 years in the army infantry, but I always trained with M4’s, M249’s, M240b’s, 50 cals etc, but never pistols. I’m teaching myself pistols using the information and training on the other weapons, and your advice really helped. Thank you so much.

I'ts kind of funny i caught this video because I was wondering I usually shot revolvers as a kid. and now the last few years I picked up a Sig 2022. ( EDCG) and the odd thing is and I had thought that this was how most modern simi autos worked, you empty the mag, eject, reset a new mag and then rack the slide and reengage. But with the pistol I have once you set the mag the slide moves forward on it's own, pretty cool sure but I have now developed a bad habit I have to break when using other pistols. and under stress on the range I find it's been a real bear to break. anyways just a little story I have about the benefits of practicing with multiple weapons instead of the same ones over and over again. keep up the great shows and info.

Great video and demo. Frank Proctor - Spec Ops Vet > Way of The Gun - demos a very similar technique. Way of The Gun now machines notches on the slide, midway between the muzzle and ejection port. Enables this technique.

I assume you're shooting a 226 if you were a SEAL. I shoot one in IPSC for a variety of reasons. How do you feel about using the slide release after a mag change? Personally, I just use the release as a spot to rest my thumb...... Also, you're bang on for bringing the gun in close. I always tell people to bring the gun into your work station and assess whats going on with the pistol. Just because it goes click, it doesnt mean its dry. There could be a double feed or other mechanical problem. As I bring it in and tilt it, I'm very quickly looking at the mag follower and the chamber. If you see brass, you may have to clear the gun first..... You also can't seat the mag properly at arms length. If you fumble and drop a mag when it counts, bending over to pick it up could be the last thing you ever do. A fun little drill I do with some friends is to have them load my mags and put them in my belt for me. You put maybe 3 rounds in one, 7 in another, have a full one and throw in some snap caps here and there to simulate a FTF. That way, everytime the gun goes click when you think it should go bang, you have to assess the gun to figure out what's going on. Good job on the videos, I subscribed and look froward to some more!

racking the slide with your hand over the top, from the back, where the slide serrations are at is still a better way. its consistent with anything else you do like tap and racks. not only that, you also have more surface contact using the whole hand. quicker? id say no. i roll my hand to the gun just like your technique except i do it with my hand over the slide. its a good idea, but staying consistent and having more contact with your slide will always be better. sweaty and bloody hands/gloves can make for a slippery slide.

@stewpidaso26
@stewpidaso26 9 жыл бұрын
lol I did. The military is still behind when it comes to newer and better technique. That includes seals. Not bashing by any means, but I wouldn't teach that. You have less surface contact on the gun for starters. It's like tires on the road, if you have thin tires less traction, wider tires more traction.

Hello Mr. Raso, Quick question. Is there any particular reason you actually rack the slide after injecting the mag vs hitting the slide release? Is it just preference? Thank you for all you do! Mark

Justin.. why would you question a 12-year veteran Navy SEAL? You should always take training first from an operator someone who does it consistent in real battle not someone who practices for that one day that they might actually have to use their training.

I have always been a proponent of over hand vs sling shot but I can see the efficiency of the sling shot when the front of the slide is grabbed. A few questions, how do you rack when you are tap racking? Clearly you have trained to the point where it works under stress and have experienced it but if you were teaching someone that was less skilled, would you worry that it is a little on the fine motor skill side in comparison to the overhand? Also on the topic of the Sig (which I dont often shoot), I never use the slide lock on any pistols because it is so far on the fine motor skill side of the spectrum but with the Sig I cant deny that I can do a faster mag change when I use it. Any thoughts on speed vs fine motor skills and the trade off?
@CRUSHEVERYTHING
@CRUSHEVERYTHING 10 жыл бұрын
Thats a good question but the answer may be a little obvious. First lets establish our mindset when thinking about this. Skill level is the first thing I will identify and then goals. Every weapon system is different wouldn't you agree? Now granted the way a slide functions on almost all semi automatic pistols are very similar and I agree that developing similar gross motions you can repeat under stress is important. However I will ask you to think of an AR platform. When you change mags its much different than when you have a malfunction would you agree with that? If your answer was yes, than we are on the same page. I treat my pistol the same way. When I am changing mags to get back on target vs when my gun goes click are 2 different things and I have trained to identify them that way. If I identify that someone has low skill level, I would recommend that they apply this type of thinking but only on 1 platform and get comfortable with one pistol before they try to advance to another one.

I agree with and practice your technique, however in your actual demonstration toward the end of the vid, it looks like you're only using your offhand thumb to release/rack that slide to chamber the round. I never actually saw you grip the slide as you demonstrated in your explanation previous to that. Was a little confusing but I'm thinkin' that's what you've developed for your own technique that's second nature to you. But it's based on the explanation you walked thru. Am I close?

What about with a glock that sometimes goes into battery when you insert your new full mag? Kinda makes it hard to train muscle memory when sometimes it does it for you and some time doesn't...? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
@CRUSHEVERYTHING
@CRUSHEVERYTHING 10 жыл бұрын
Hey Zack, That can happen often. I know some guys that slap and seat the mag so hard that the slide goes home almost every single time. But, when it doesn't I think it messes them up a little. Either way you should know how to handle both. Creating consistency in your performance and training will help you to be more predictable. The slide goes home on me as well and when it does I just have to recognize it instantly. When I run dry and my slide locks to the rear, I can feel it without thinking about it. I think changing your mag is very similar, when I seat my mag and the slide goes home I feel it and then go to my grip instead grabbing the slide. Did that help?
