Carried a 4 C cell Maglite my entire career in police work long before little LED lights ever appeared. Mine hs been used to break car windows in rescue. Also thrown through a windshield to stop a drunk from running me down. The Maglite was the first of its kind, and I've upgraded it with an LED bulb and adapter, along with my almost equally old MiniMag for better illumination. It runs on standard batteries available everywhere, and not on some exotic expense hard to find batteries. Nope, I personally won't "dis" the veteran Maglites.

Security guards doing night shift like the maglight because it's also a weapon. Besides adding a modern LED, maglight needs to completely redesign their reflector. I bought a drop-in LED/reflector replacement for my maglight years ago, and I also had to change the lens for tempered glass so as not to melt it. But you're right about runtimes, even without lithium batteries those things will keep going a long time.

My father bought me a 4D Maglite for Easter in 2001. Like other commenters, I have upgraded to LED illumination. It is one of the few things I retained from my childhood. It's only slightly scratched and performs better than it did when new. My torch has been the topic of conversation at many camping trips because its well-built and durable design makes it a great choice for trips. Additionally, its ability to be used for self-defense makes it appealing for those who might feel vulnerable (for example, my wife while travelling in her vehicle). I have been practicing martial arts for over 15 years and the Maglite is the best improvised self-defense tool I can think of.

Maglites are outdated both in terms of design and function, but.... they have FANTASTIC build quality and (when using an LED upgrade) fantastic battery-life. I like the fact that they don't have modes and are heavyweight, they have a unique rugged role where perhaps I wouldn't trust my daily flashlights. My 3D cell flashlight dates from 1981 (even has 'patent pending' stamped on it) and with a replacement glass-lens and LED drop-in bulb is as good as new, and has outlived a couple of rechargeable LED lights I bought online. I'm afraid the build quality DOESN'T extend to the AA series, which I found unreliable due to the rotary-switch. I gave up on those. The 3D has been a real lifetime purchase, though.

A decent reliable light that gets a big plus for being American made, but of course they could use brighter bulbs and a better reflector. I like the AAA led minimag and the led solitaire for inspection lights, but there are absolutely better lights. The big plus for me is the reliability, I've had many flashlights that start to flicker on me eventually when mag lights dont. I also like the simplicity not just in function but aesthetics , having a low you can easily skip and a high is all I need. I don't want strobe and sos and all that worthless BS, just twist on and off with a low you can skip right past is it. I'm fine with a single on maglites.

@@collectornick4270 And something I've recently learned about that I was unaware of before is candella. As I understand it lumins is the amount of light and candella is the intensity of the light it puts out. What's the point of having a 3000 lumen torch? The glare back will just burn your retina. I use and love my Maglites. I've had cheaper brands but they just don't last. My original Maglite is a 2D incandescent bulb. Had it for 21 years and it still works. That's one of the selling points of Maglites. You buy one and it'll last forever. Plus you can still buy spares for it. Your video is a little unfair because it's comparing a 2nd generation - older model maglite - to modern competitors. The latest models, like the ML300 range, tackle all the issues you mentioned. Much better light output, more modes, better focus etc. My final and biggest point is Why do you need a 3000 lumen torch? Do you do the night shift for the Cave Rescue team, because if you don't do that shift, you don't need a 3000 lumen torch. The selling point of a Maglite is that it's a extremely well made torch for everyday use that's going to last long enough to be passed down to your kids / grandkids. In the current throw away / climate crises world, there is something to be admired about that.

Alkaline batteries are a real danger for the Maglite. The solution is to buy these Eneloop Panasonic D cell size AA adapters. These you load with rechargeable AA batteries and you get at least 16 hours of fullbright runtime. 80 hours as with D cell alkaline you will not reach but way more runtime than with any other flashlight. These rechargeable AA Eneloop batteries areinside the D cell adapter enclosen and on top never leak. Be aware that an 2 D cell Maglite with multi function switch will not run well on these AA rechargeable batteries and has wastly deminished light output. Although they have very long runtimes (not continuous shining) and last of about 6 Months in the flashlight. The Eneloop adapter system works well with all my 3 D LED Maglites which have all single on/off switches. Just use that battery system and the leak problem is gone forever.
