Jimmy Carter was my Barack Obama… I was 7 years old when he became president and I loved him, even when I had to wait on gas lines in the back seat of my mom’s car. I felt so deeply for him during the hostage crisis. I respected him even as a child; my respect and admiration for him, and Rosalyn, only grew over the years. The definition of a true public servant. Thank you and god bless you, Mr. President. The world is a better place for having had him in it.

I am 72, and was during the Carter years working on the BLS Occupational Safety and Health Survey at Labor. I was a GS-9 and one late Friday afternoon the White House called and wanted to speak to someone who actually worked on the operations unit of the Survey, not the data analysis people and I got elected to take the call by default as everyone above me had gone. Carter had had a paperwork reduction initiative and wanted the Survey form reduced as we had a sample of 700k establishments nationwide. The problem was that all the questions we had were mandated by the OSHA Act and the OSH Survey was the only one in the Government mandated by law. So to meet the directive we simply reduced the print size and made it a one side form, down from two sides, which saved no paper. So I get on the call and on the other end they said hold for the President and Carter came on and said he was having a press conference on Monday and they wanted a million of the current forms for display. I said respectfully we did not have a million forms as we never over printed like that and suggested we send over 20k, pile IBM 370 printout paper under them to make it look like a million. So I get to go to the White House, meet Carter and the ruse works. It flabbergasted my superiors that he gave that level of personal attention to such a trivial matter, but that was one of his faults as a technician in his training in the Navy Sub Fleet under Rickover. Carter had trouble seeing the forest for the trees. For me, I eventually got a GM-13 out of it, and cred for dealing with him to his satisfaction at age 25. RIP Mr. President...

Reagan really was just a less deranged version of Trump, without the paranoia and sociopathy. He caused so much damage to people here and elsewhere, I can't imagine why anyone would have happy memories of his Administration. But I actually knew people with first-hand knowledge of what Reagan was doing in Central America and how much he was lying about the situation. I transcribed interviews made by a local priest who responded to the call from Jesuits in Central America to please come down and see what was really going on for themselves. Some of the interviews were with Jesuit teachers at the University in San Salvador who were later murdered by the death squads beloved by the Reagan Administration. It was really an awful period and pretty disillusioning for anyone who valued true freedom and democracy and self-determination. The only one in my family who believed me was my mother. She had done a little interview with a Salvadoran nun for her local paper and she said there was so much that she was told that she didn't dare include in the article. My brother was skeptical because he wasn't seeing what I was saying in the US media. I tried to explain the concept of self-censorship to him. As long as the media owners felt they had to be on good terms with US authorities in order to report anything, all stories other than the government-approved version were squashed and eventually reporters just stopped trying to send that kind of story to the editors. It just seemed pointless to try to even investigate. I knew from reliable sources what lies were being told and how much was omitted from US media reports about Central America during the Reagan Administration because I was actually personally tuned in. How much do we really know about other situations? Someone with a brother in the National Guard told me that her brother told her not to believe it if told he died in a "training exercise" in El Salvador. They weren't training, National Guard units were being used in combat. An American who had been in a hotel in San Salvador frequented by US military took a bunch of tourist type photographs and when back home in the US he had them developed. All the ones he took at the hotel were mysteriously missing from his order. Yikes. Imagine what that means about how regular Americans are under surveillance and how government can meddle with something that simple. I also knew a doctor in Honduras who was an expert in childhood nutrition, and he was persona non grata at the US Embassy during the Reagan years because he complained about the children of farmers displaced by US-funded and directed contra camps in Honduras that were attacking neighboring Nicaragua. He pointed out that malnourished children can die from diseases that a well fed child can shake off. He was told bluntly by the US Embassy why they were denying him visas even to just touch down in the US in a plane taking him to scheduled workshops in Canada and other places. It was because he was critical of such US policies. He got his MD in the US and was not a wild radical. But he was being targeted by death squads himself in Honduras. Local people who went on study trips to Central America reported that the US Ambassador to Honduras was never at the Embassy - apparently too busy directing the contras himself (he was a military person and had relevant experience in Vietnam). They said the Embassy staff was acting downright embarrassed when they were asking reasonable questions that they were not allowed to answer. Some directly said that their questions were proper and apologized. Reagan was put into politics in the first place because General Electric used him as a spokesman to give talks to various "conservative" groups. I always thought he was a lousy actor, but he found his niche in such talks promoting things of importance to GE (which was a military contractor and they made as much in that area as they did selling consumer products). So he had that connection with rich sponsors in common with Trump also.

Did not mention the creation of 8 million new jobs, and lowering the deficit. Also ignored the creation of a national energy policy, adding over a million acres to the National Parks, and shoring up Social Security, not to mention hiring a record number of women, blacks and Hispanics to government jobs. That didn't cause 70s inflation, that's a Friedmanite myth. What did was the sharp rise in oil price, and the US economy trying to inflate it away (a trick that failed to fool OPEC ). Oil is not "a" commodity, it is THE commodity, its price affects all others.

Jimmy Carter was a good man and a true Christian. He was not able to adequately fix the “stagflation” he inherited from Ford, and he bungled the Iran hostage crisis, and those failures doomed his reelection. But he did negotiate the durable Egypt/Israel peace accords, and was a social progressive, advancing pro-human rights and environmental legislation.

Bill's a sweet guy, but it's funny how time and inclination change our perspective on things; I'd like to say as an outsider that I am disappointed to hear Jimmy Carter being blamed for the Neo-Cons, especially as I saw the clear seeding of them by Nixon, quite some years earlier. Carter may have disappointed many Americans, what's new about a president not doing what half the population wants, nothing, right? However, as much as some Republicans go all gooey-eyed about Reagan's tenure, I remember him being a nasty piece of work.

This just occurred to me: I think there will be many, many days that trump doesn't show up to work. He's older, and obviously much more tired than before. Also, he doesn't need to get elected again. He'll be golfing and watching TV, not showing up at all. If they're fighting behind the scenes now -- it's only going to get much worse without Trump to decide who wins the argument of the day. It will be entertaining for sure.

Great forecast. That is what I see as well. The Republican House and Senate will be more important to watch. Because they have no policies that will help most Americans, and are terribly un-popular. They are going to attempt some heinous sh*t, but without their dear leader weighing in, nothing will get passed. Dems need to stay healthy and miss zero days of work. These mfer's will try to do economy damaging, midnight bills, when no one is looking.
