Fedora and Adriana are two of the most popular verismo operas. Most sopranos at one point in their career have sung one of the two roles or both, as it is the case with Magda Olivero. Had Umberto Giordano, the composer of Fedora, lived to see and hear Olivero in the title role of his opera, he probably would have had the same reaction Franco Cilea had when he heard Olivero sing his Adriana: “She went beyond the notes.” Unfortunately, Giordano died in 1948, and Olivero sang Fedora for the first time in 1953.
The performance chosen for this video is the dramatic final scene from the third act of Fedora recorded in 1967 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Loris was sung by a fine young Italian tenor, Doro Antonioli, very much appreciated by Magda Olivero. The sound is of excellent quality and the photos all come from the 1965 San Carlo production with Mario Del Monaco as Loris.
