This concert version of "La Bohème" was recorded at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in 1968 and it includes all the important scenes where Mimi is singing. At the time of the broadcast, Magda Olivero was 58 years old and it also happens to be the last time she sang the role of Mimi.
Her début in "La Bohème" goes back 1936 and a year later, aged 27, she sang it next to a 47 years old Gigli. During her extraordinary long career, Magda Olivero was closely associate with Puccini, she portrayed on stage nearly all the composer’s heroines, 9 in total. She sang, Manon Lescaut 46 times, Mimi 56 times, Tosca 83 times, Cio-Cio-San 64 times, Minnie 33 times, Suor Angelica 16 times, Giorgetta 7 times, Lauretta 2 times and Liu 32 times.
By comparison Tebaldi performed 5 of Puccini heroines on stage: Manon Lescaut 29 times, Mimi 117 times, Tosca 166 times, Cio-Cio-San 29 times and Minnie 6 times; while on stage, Callas performed 4 of Puccini’s heroines: Tosca 46 times, Cio-Cio-San 3 times, Suor Angelica 4 times and Turandot 24 times.
The main interest in this performance of "La Bohème" is Magda Olivero total commitment in projecting a youthful and vulnerable Mimi totally in love with Rodolfo. Her consummate knowledge of the music and the text, her voluptuous phrasing and superb legatos, plus the clear enunciation of every words, make this performance another precious gem added to Magda Olivero’s sensitive interpretation of Puccini’s heroines.

I was so lucky to experience almost all those concertante operas and concerts with Magda Olivero in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Here she sang Manon Lescaut, Iris, Adriana Lecouvreur and Medea and countless other concerts. She remains unforgettable, thanks to all those wonderful radio recordings made in Amsterdam by one of the most interesting sopranos of the last century.

A uniquely identifiable performance from Olivero as usual. But I want to put in a word for the tenor. He’s really good! He sometimes straight-tones and holds the sound, but his voice is dark and rich. Beautiful.

A hearing again with my friend Luigi Lega, who sang und lived in Wuppertal at that time. Luigi lived on the same floor with Kurt Moll, who later went to Hamburg. Magda Olivero I never heared live. I saw her as an old lady in Parma about 35 years ago when Cesare Siepi sung some performances.
