There is an interesting story about this video. In 1996, I wanted to offer Magda Olivero and her admirers an anthology, in CD format, of the best moments of her career. I already had some recorded performances of hers that I had taped, but my collection was far from complete. Having presented my project to Magda, she graciously offered me all the audio archives she possessed: many “live” broadcasts made in Italy by RAI, and others made in Holland in collaboration with the Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam. I first started by listening to all these treasures, then numerous hours were spent sorting them out in preparation for the project.
A year later, the CD “Magda Olivero in Concert” was ready to be issued on the label “FanClub”. Of course, the first person to receive the finished product was Magda; after listening to the CD, she wrote me a deeply felt thank you note, and later told me: “Now I can better understand the reason why those passionate outbursts form the audience when I sing.” It was the first time she heard her own voice reproduced with such quality and fidelity.
At the beginning of 2022, with advent of new and more sophisticated technologies capable of extracting all the nuances still concealed in the original master tapes, I decided it was time to remaster the concert. Since the CD format is now being replaced by streaming, I decided to reissue all 19 arias in a video format and add it to the numerous videos available on KZbin from “The Magda Olivero Archives”.
C'è una storia interessante in questo video. Nel 1996 volevo offrire a Magda Olivero e ai suoi ammiratori un'antologia, in formato CD, dei momenti migliori della sua carriera. Avevo già alcune sue esibizioni registrate, ma la mia collezione era tutt'altro che completa. Dopo aver presentato il mio progetto a Magda, lei mi ha gentilmente offerto tutti gli archivi audio in suo possesso: molte trasmissioni "live" realizzate in Italia dalla RAI, e altre realizzate in Olanda in collaborazione con il Royal Concertgebouw di Amsterdam. Ho iniziato ascoltando tutti questi tesori, poi ho trascorso numerose ore a sistemarli per preparare il progetto.
Un anno dopo, il CD "Magda Olivero in Concert" era pronto per essere pubblicato dall'etichetta "FanClub". Naturalmente, la prima persona a ricevere il lavoro finito fu Magda; dopo aver ascoltato il CD, mi scrisse un biglietto di ringraziamento molto sentito, e in seguito mi disse: "Ora posso capire meglio il motivo di quegli scoppi di passione del pubblico quando canto". Era la prima volta che sentiva la propria voce riprodotta con tale qualità e fedeltà.
All'inizio del 2022, con l'avvento di nuove e più sofisticate tecnologie in grado di estrarre tutte le sfumature ancora nascoste nei nastri master originali, ho deciso che era giunto il momento di "rimasterizzare" il concerto. Poiché il formato CD è ormai sostituito dallo streaming, ho deciso di ripubblicare tutte le 19 arie in formato video e di aggiungerle ai numerosi video disponibili su KZbin tratti da "The Magda Olivero Archives".

Il "vola, vola via" finale è uno dei passaggi canori più belli dell'opera. Nessuna Muzio, Tebaldi, Callas, Scotto, Freni, Caballè, Kabaivanska o Zeani può avvicinarsi al modo in cui Magda Olivero fa girare quella nota. Il crescendo, il diminuendo e il fortissimo sono così espressivi e richiedono una tecnica che solo lei può realizzare. 24:55

Some may think she may not have had a beautiful voice (also said of Callas). Whatever the opinion on the voice itself, she interpreted her roles in a unique, marvelous way. She respected above all, the intention of the composers in the operas she sang. I don't know any other operatic artist, male or female, who was or is as dedicated as Magda Olivero. She kept her incredible technique until very old age. She was an remains a miracle in the history of opera. We shall not hear a voice like hers again.
