MAGDA OLIVERO - The 1962 Amsterdam Concert - Complete HD

If the expression “verismo” means to sing with “real” feelings and conviction as to stir emotions in the listeners, then Magda Olivero can certainly be called “La Verissima”
The arias in this concert are from the first of a series of concerts given at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam; Magda Olivero sang regularly in the Dutch city from 1962 to 1973. The arias included in this 1962 concert are all from composers of the verismo school (Puccini, Alfano, Mascagni, Cilea, Boito) and the rendering by Magda Olivero is in the purest verismo style. She was known to send her audience into ecstatic frenzies and with reason. Armed with an impeccable technique and with a voice with an incredible flexibility (sul fiato), she could spin an exquisite pianissimo then augment it effortlessly into a shattering fortissimo. Also, she understood the true meaning words and their correct pronunciation, her resonant speaking voice was graced with low chest notes that were used sparingly and only to emphasize the dramatic tension, never in a show off fashion like certain sopranos do, trying to emulate her verismo style.
Magda Olivero was a sincere and true artist that completely identified with the persona she was playing on stage, whether Manon, Tosca, Adriana, or Violetta. She once said in an interview that she had learned how to die in so many ways that she now knew what it felt like to die. Total commitment, that is in essence, why she has become a legend and why she still is “La Grande Dame” of verismo, “La Verissima”.

Se l'espressione "verismo" significa cantare con sentimenti e convinzione "veri", in modo da suscitare emozioni negli ascoltatori, allora Magda Olivero può certamente essere chiamata "La Verissima".
Le arie di questo concerto sono tratte dal primo di una serie di concerti tenuti al Concertgebouw di Amsterdam; Magda Olivero cantò regolarmente nella città olandese dal 1962 al 1973. Le arie incluse in questo concerto del 1962 sono tutte di compositori della scuola verista (Puccini, Alfano, Mascagni, Cilea, Boito) e la resa di Magda Olivero è nel più puro stile verista. Era nota per mandare il suo pubblico in delirio e con ragione. Dotata di una tecnica impeccabile e di una voce dall'incredibile flessibilità, (sul fiato) poteva "far girare" un pianissimo squisito e poi aumentarlo senza sforzo in un fortissimo dirompente. Inoltre, comprendeva il vero significato delle parole e la loro corretta pronuncia, la sua voce risonante era abbellita da note basse di petto che venivano usate con parsimonia e solo per enfatizzare la tensione drammatica, mai in modo ostentato come fanno certi soprani che cercano di emulare il suo stile verista.
Magda Olivero era un'artista sincera e vera che si identificava completamente con il personaggio che interpretava sul palco, che fosse Manon, Tosca, Adriana o Violetta. Una volta disse in un'intervista che aveva imparato a morire in così tanti modi che ora sapeva cosa si provava a morire. Impegno totale, questo è in sostanza il motivo per cui è diventata una leggenda e per cui è ancora "La Grande Dame" del verismo, "La Verissima".

Magda Olivero e la sua voce leggendaria...perché così si può dire del suo canto...perché se Maria Callas è chiamata la Divina...Magda Olivero è la Leggenda...perché quando, la si ascolta con la sua arte ti porta a vivere le tragedie e le gioie dei personaggi che lei racconta co la sua voce incredibile, dai suoni penetranti...incalzanti...dall'estensione aldilà delle possibilità umane...ma sempre con una tecnica perfetta...e ferrea nello spartito e una bellezza di suono chiarissima e pura...aggiungo il grande trasporto che la pone come Maria Callas...ASSOLUTA INTERPRETE.🙏👏👏👏

Auf der Klangbühne, ja auf der Opernbühne im Theater war die Callas kaum zu übertreffen. Gesangsdarstellungen von Callas Olivero, Farrell, Deutekom, schwierig, Farrell und Deutekom geraten ins Hintertreffen, bestimmt keine Schauspielerikonen, aber auf der Klangbühne entstanden für uns Nachgeborene unvergleichliche Klangbilder, Olivero, eine Schauspielwundet, glaubt man Zeitzeugen, oder Callas, reine Geschmackssache, trotzdem gleichwertig. Ozean, du Ungeheuer, DIE Jahrhundertaufnahme von Eileen Farrell, Deutekom, kaum überhörbar, die eigenwilligen Koloraturen, Rouladen höre ich in Sumi Jo's erster Königin der Nacht unter Jordan wieder. Ereignisse, die meine Bewunderung für die Oper begründen. Die hunderte, vielleicht auch tausende Sänger*innen, die fast jeden Tag sich mühen, uns, dem Publikum, die Oper nahe zu bringen, auch, wenn die Stimme nicht unverwechselbar, einmalig, klingt, gebührt unser Dank. Ein Geschenk, viel zu oft vergessen.

Enjoy Caballe, but the technique this lady has is unsurpassable, her vibrato is much richer than Caballe's and so are her crescendos, and her voice is more even. Listen for example to 19:00 Enjoying something doesn't mean it is the best.... We shouldn't compare, blue is blue and red is red...We need them all... :-)

@@denisrobert36 I don't think she is acquired taste, that is rather Callas, with her awful high register you must be indoctrinated to like because it is impossible to like it naturally, This lady is perfection incarnate and even at the age of 81 - there is a video of her singing in a church, I've just listened to it - her high register and crescendos were much better than those of Callas and Caballe too... There is another singer who is greatly underrated, whose high register and chest voice were equally superb, Cristina Deutekom, and both were also noble ladies, they didn't make enough scandals to become famous......
