We were moving up a slight grade near the crest of the hill (1969)... we (11 of us) had walked directly into an ambush that included around 20 NVA with small arms and a light machine gun. We were completely trapped, under heavy fire, and if these soldiers called their comrades, we would be cut to pieces. We called for a Sandy but none were available. Our call was transferred to a Huey UH1-B gunship and a Cobra. We gave our position and the position of the NVA, we popped smoke and were told to hunker in place. We could hear the Huey coming but he lagged back for whatever reason. You can't imagine what happened next. The Cobra crested, slanted down the contour of the hill, kicked the Cobra sideways without slowing, and unleashed his mini-gun and a couple of rockets. Without stopping or going to a hover, he kicked the Cobra straight again and went on through the valley, hooking up with the Huey on the other side. Virtually all of the NVA were dead. A few were seriously wounded, and we left them that way. The Cobra is truly a death sentence for the enemy, who had a favorite saying ... "don't shoot at the skinny ones".

@@Epicaviation47 What we couldn't figure out was how the pilot coordinated all this activity. Later we came to understand there were two sets of eyes and the front seater operated the weapons. Then it made sense that driving the Cobra was a separate job from spotting the enemy and engaging the weapons. Either way, it was like watching a ballet.

Hands down, the “Snake” was my favorite Army aircraft to fly. The “Cool Factor” was off the chart. Its main shortcoming was weight and more often than not, you have to trade fuel for ammo, which limited range and station time. It was great flying the Apache where you can carry full fuel and ammo in most cases.

Awesome EA《☆》I always get a kick out of the Cobras slender profile like a Fish👍🏾😁🤳Fairly aerodynamic for a hekleopter. Working the ground vibrations out of choppers can be challenging & sometimes is a tradeoff to get them to fly smooth. A lot of the Tailboom shaking was probably due to the pilot not having the cyclic centered & rolling the throttle up faster than recommended. Uneven pavement & skid shoe contact also will cause vibrations. Cheers✌🏼😎☯️

For the first time I noticed in your video that on the Cobra it sits on the right side. As usually with all my my clockwise turning RC helicopters. You couldn't do a loop, but you could do a "Split S", which was a tactical "Return to Target". I didn't quite get it either. We'd try to get through all of the required before takeoff and armament system checks as quickly as we could, then we'd do a level acceleration takeoff to get going for whatever training we needed to do that day. Low and fast in a Cobra impresses, hovering - not so much. Still, it's good to see that one is still flying.
