Thank you so much for featuring Ronnie Wood. He’s definitely one of my favorite guitarists and I think he’s one of the greatest guitarists ever!my favorites include Too Bad, Miss Judy’s Farm, Mandolin Wind and all many songs from OooLaLa album!! Just a great wholesome pure deep bluesey genuine sound!! Thanks again for the lesson.
@MarkZabel6 ай бұрын
You're welcome. I love Ronnie's playing. He's one of those players who knows that a guitarist's role is usually a supporting and tries to make songs better rather than show off. I wasn't 100% sure he played on Mandolin Wind, but the guitar is incredibly beautiful on that song - which is in itself incredibly moving. One of my top 25 tracks for sure. And yes, his play on OooLaLa ... superb!

+sean fried Agree. Very underrated because it's not exceedingly technical. It's hard to get the right tone though ... it's the fingers at least as much as the guitar and amp. Thanks for the kind comment!

frank thomas Thanks Frank! I'm using a Fender Twin (modeler) with the gain clocked at about 9 o'clock (basically as clean as you can do it) and a tiny touch of spring reverb. On the guitar I'm using the neck pickup, tone control full at 10. The key is to play with your fingers giving very little sustain ... almost trying to get a "rubber band" sound. Lots of sliding (very quickly and jerkily). Takes a while to develop the feel. As always, I appreciate the listen and the kind comment too!

Hey, that's my guitar! Same color and all (according to the serial# it's a 1977 model). That solo from Ronnie Wood is, despite not being difficult, legendary. Guitarists in the 70's were an inspired, soul-wrenching bunch - thank you for the tutorial!

Imagine "Maggie May" and several other Rod Stewart solo hits without Ronnie Wood? They would not be nearly as good. This is the essence of Woody, R&B with a heavy country nuance. I have heard people say he does not have a definitive style. Well, yes he does, and this is it. Very similar to Keith, and that is why that have gotten on so well..
@MarkZabel2 жыл бұрын
Man, you are so right. IMHO, Ronnie's solo here is one of the best in all of rock. Not at all because it's fast or difficult, but because it fits the song so well. The nuances you're talking about, a quick slide here, a mordent there, then a bend, all with well-chosen notes are what make the difference. It all just sounds so natural and right in the song. That's the hallmark of a great solo and a great player! Thanks for your input brother!

@roberteberhart11394 жыл бұрын
@@MarkZabel I watch on a cheap Android phone usally without earphones, so sound and video quality aren't that important. The thing that's different now is you are sponcered (I think) and like represent someone else, the old school videos just seem down to earth and genuine and not like a business commercial for your brand that came into the new hip generation of guitar lesson videos of 2020 lol. Sorry Mark, you asked me to be more specific, and this is just my opinion. But the old school vids were real.

I have the same guitar. Much abused. It has risen more times than Christ. Currently butchered to fit a set of '63 PAFs. I've just now realised through drunkenly strumming it acoustically that the 'secret' of PAFs is not what they do; its what they don't do. They (at least the ones I have) amplify the guitar's true tone without adding or removing anything. The same tone you hear if you play it unplugged. Few modern examples do this. Not sure why but these do. It comes across in your video here too. Gorgeous woody/flute like tone. The most transparent pickups would take that and run with it. :)

Thanks. I did it a long time ago, so I'm not sure what I used, but I can hear and see I was using the neck pickup on my Les Paul (mini humbuckers) and playing clean at the edge of breakup. No pedals. So, here's what I'd try: 1. If Full-sized Humbuckers: Use clean channel, flat EQ, edge of breakup. 2. If P-90's: Clean channel, reduce mids a bit, edge of breakup 3. Single coil: Clean channel, add bass, edge of breakup I'd try the neck pickup first in every case. Note that "edge of breakup" will mean different things for you depending upon the amp and pickups you're using; more gain for single coils, less for Full-sized humbuckers. Things to stay away from: pedals, too much gain. Have fun!

Great tutorial. I do have a suggestion that applies here and to almost all such rote method guitar solo tutorials. You only briefly mention the underlying chords over which the solo occurs. Why not reference the relationship between the underlining chord and each of the notes of the solo using scale degrees and note names rather string names and fret numbers. I would find it much easier to learn the solo or improvise variations of the solo elsewhere on the fretboard or play the solo in a different key. Also, this method / knowledge would help the player to find their way back to the solo line if they momentarily stray from the role method solo.
@MarkZabel5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's a balance. I don't do all rote method solos, but when I do, I get often get negative comments for what you suggest (some positive too). I personally would never play a rote solo live ... just not in my DNA as a player ... so when I practice over a chord progression I do think about scales, key centers, and mostly chord tones and moving between them. In my newer videos I try to discretely put them in. Even on most of my old videos I talk briefly over the chords. I'm surprised I didn't do that at all in this video. (Didn't re-listen to it today, but it has been a while certainly!) That is, when I'm not specifically covering "voice leading" or "playing chord tones" or "playing over a progression" (i.e., anything other than pure repertoire.) Thanks for your comments. All good ideas!

@MarkZabel3 жыл бұрын
Great question. The answer is yes ... although I also play mandolin, so I have never tried to do it on guitar. Generally speaking, you use the upper register of the guitar and use a lot of tremolo picking. It also helps using an open tuning and using a capo so you limit yourself to the upper registers.

Bobby Humphrey Hi. Just took a look at it - it IS the version at Crossroads. Yeah, I'll give this a shot and post it if I get it nearly right. IMHO he was better than just about everyone else there. He's got the fingers thing going on with the right hand instead of the pick - using two fingers to pull off most of the chords and combining that with the Hendrix chordal movements. It's damn good.
