Maggie Smith was one of our greatest actors. Every time she said a line in "Murder by Death" I lost it. "Oh Dickie... that's tacky. That's really tacky" was her response to David Niven explaining what someone would want to do with a dead naked body. Drama or Comedy....no one comes close to Dame Maggie Smith. RIP

Love this film. It's a visual delight - sets and costumes are outstanding. Alec McCowan was terrific here, as he was in Hitchcock's Frenzy around the same time. I always wanted the soundtrack album with Tony Hatch's elegant music, but they didn't release one. I did manage to get the large format movie poster, however.

The aging make-up may look a little unconvincing by modern standards - or by contrast with what Maggie Smith actually looks like now she has attained that age herself - but the charm of her performance in this film was always in the way she portrays the same character at different stages in her life from 18 to 80 while she and her 'nephew' travel across Europe together.

I just did some research and found out it's Travels with My Aunt, based on the novel by Graham Greene. He's a great writer, and many of his books have been turned into film. They are definitely worth a read. I remember I was a bit obsessed by him when I was at uni. I read several of his novels, they are well written and very easy to read, and some are quite like a detective novel.

Maggie Smith (born 1934) playing the aunt of Alec McCowen (born 1925). How I wish she had remade this film when the was the age of the character she was actually meant to be, perhaps using the same flashbacks as Cukor shot.
@58christiansfulАй бұрын
She could do the grotesque high-camp aunt at the drop of a hat. I believe she also did another Aunt Augusta - Lady Bracknell -on stage.
@1psoas9Ай бұрын
indeed she did. We can hope that some film of that may turn up. It would be just home-movie stuff, but there might have been some piracy or backstage grabs.... THough the lady herself often said she could not bear to watch herself onscreen, so there was probably not one made for her private use.
