I just drove by all of that yesterday. Went snowboarding at Cataloochee and then went down 19 to Cherokee. Been going up there to ski/snowboard for 25 years. Interesting to hear some of the history.

"Popcorn" Sutton was a living legend. I had the honor knowing him. I met him the Maggie valley restaurant. He would come in all the time for pie. Smoke Lucky strikes and tell some of the Dirtiest Jokes you'll ever hear.😆 Maggie Valley could not have been Prouder. To be the Birth place of the most famous Moonshiner on the Planet ! R.I.P Popcorn. Good Vibes 👣

Ha! I'm in Maggie quite often, my dad lives about a mile from where you started the video (in front of The Maggie Valley Inn.) Love, love, love the area, but it's sad to see how much has closed. I remember back in the 80's it was still a great little touristy town. Have you read the book "Maggie of Maggie Valley" great book by her daughter that tells the story of Maggie herself!

It was hit hard, mainly by the construction of Highway 441 which routed people around Maggie Valley to Cherokee. Maggie lost a great deal of traffic due to that road, and it really hurt many local businesses. Ghost Town not being kept modern and updated also hurt the town significantly as well, as it was a major attraction.

Born and raised in Maggie. I could never leave! Maggie is the clogging capital. I’d see Popcorn every Sunday with his Lucky Strike’s and he would tell us some perverted joke. He would drive his old Model T down Main St. and everyone would wave but he would never put his hand up.

That's so sad that most of the gift shops and Christmas town is closed down . I've heard several stories about Popcorn . My step dad use to dig graves for a living and when he had to go up there to dig a grave he would visit Popcorn . There's still plenty of moonshine up in those mountains . So I've heard anyway . lol ! Thanks Jacob...!!

Nice video.I vacationed here as a kid from 1960 to the late 1970's.We were from near the Outer Banks of NC and it was a 11 hr drive to MV.We would stop and get my Great Aunt in High Point then drive here and spend a week or two at my Aunt's friend's house in a area across from the country club.Then we rented a tiny house at Geisha Gardens each July for a week for years.I will be in this area in a few weeks and want to go by Geisha Gardens and see it all closed up.My Mom bought a lot with a double wide up Fie Top Rd there and I sold it in 1998.I didn't visit that many shops there as a kid but it's sad to see many closed up.Others are still open tho.I never got to eat at any place in town,esp Joey's Pancake house.My Mom was cheap and didn't eat out often.At least I have eaten at the Jarret House in Dillsboro.

That painting on the Salty Dog looks more like a dog loving an anthropomorphized pickle while they are fishing. Weird. Way back in the mid 1960s my family took a motor trip from our home in Connecticut to visit friend sin Nashville and I remember a whole lot of those model churches on the trip, mostly down through the Great Smokey Mountains. My father, being a Protestant minister, had to stop at every single one of them and read what they were. The gift shop in the 14 minute mark of the video looks like the countless ones we stopped at during our journey. It also looks like we could have been the last customers in 1964! Ha ha! As always, very good and entertaining video! Thank you for posting!

So sad to see Maggie this way. I have been in all those stores. Walked to the top of the tower many times for most photographed view. Been to Ghost town about 8 times. Loved the roller coaster on the side of the mountain. We ride it the first summer it opened and the next summer and I think that was the summer it closed. My boys loved the shoot outs on the streets . I think the casino was the down fall of this area. That’s when it all started. We still go to Cherokee ever summer and camp at Yogi for 10 days.

It's smart for them to cater to motorcycles and their rides. It's a beautiful place to ride, and we eat, buy fuel, and trinkets, we need to have our bikes fixed on the road and we stay at hotels. Most riders drop a lot of money in beautiful places every year. When we go we pick a restaurant that has the most bikes in front of it. I wonder why the merchandise is still in all of the closed shops. I wonder if, like places in Arizona, there is a high season and they only open then.
@tinaferren2791
@tinaferren2791 8 жыл бұрын
There are still many places that are open to buy trinkets and such although some are open seasonal from early May until the end of October but many are open throughout the year because of the increase of population in the area. It is good to hear that you enjoy visiting.
