I’ve loved ELO since they first achieved fame in the 1970s. Leader Jeff Lynne, is a very talented singer/songwriter. And the repetition in this song doesn’t bother me because the sound and the beat are so good. Great reaction, Maggie.

@@Cosmo-Kramer Well, I caught the band a few weeks ago. His voice isn't what it used to be, and he relies heavily on others. Nowhere near the energy of Jagger, who I also saw recently. But still good. The graphics and musicians were tremendous. He is packing it in, at least on the road.

Been a fan of ELO since I heard them do Roll Over Beethoven in 1973 or 1974 when I was 10. As I got older I figured out it was the depth and layering of their songs. Their music is in its own class of progressive rock.

@Fosh1922 ай бұрын
You have to remember that this is actually Jeff Lynne with a swathe of session musicians, the original ELO is long gone with most members either retired or passed away. I suggest you have a look at footage from the time (1976) of the original releases of tracks from Out of the Blue. The Out of the Blue - Live at Wembley (1978) also gives a true representation of how incredibly good the original band really were..
@lhplАй бұрын
Although seeing Jeff live is incredible (I had the pleasure just once back in 2018, I hope the Over and Out tour will come to Europe and that I can afford a ticket, or it will turn out not to be the last anyway), Jeff can't replicate the original studio versions anymore, even if the horde of talented musicians can make up for the original members. His voice is still wonderful, but obviously not as versatile as it used to be - he just isn't young anymore to say the truth. And there is _nothing_ wrong with that. I saw Brian Wilson performing the 50th anniversary tour of Pet Sounds, and I loved hearing him singing as much as he could, even if his voice has deteriorated a lot more than Jeff's. But to experience the songs in their original splendor, and how they were originally intended to sound, one _has_ to go to the original studio versions. And this also means avoiding the remakes Jeff did some time ago for copyright and royalties reasons probably, although I can understand why making them may have been a good idea, for those reasons. On this song, I think in particular the sped-up section is not nearly as good as the original.

You might like hearing Jeff Lynne's solo version of this song from 2012. He re-recorded many of ELO's hits. The album is called Mr. Blue Sky. Jeff plays bass, drums, keyboards, lead and rhythm guitars as well as singing lead and background vocals. The strings follow his original arrangements. Nothing seems amiss.

My understanding is that Jeff Lynns ELO is the group after the band broke up. If its just ELO its the original lineup.
@lhplАй бұрын
Jeff Lynne = ELO = Jeff Lynne. After the original "termination" in 1986 following Balance Of Power, some members tried to get a continuation going (which I will not bother naming), and Jeff was not happy about it. This turned the relation between Jeff and certain former members sour. Jeff has always been the core and primary owner of ELO, which was formed by him, Roy Wood (who departed after the first album) and drummer Bev Bevan, as the successor group to the Move. Eventually Bevan transferred his share of the ownership of the name to Jeff, and Jeff is in complete control - which however does not prevent what is now really just a pretentious cover band, although renamed, to continue to leech on the ELO name, being promoted by less reputable venues as if they were "the real thing". This is probably why Jeff renamed it to Jeff Lynne's ELO. With the recent death of Richard Tandy, who remained loyal to Jeff throughout, there aren't many original members alive anyway.

Jeff Lynne left the Move to form his own outfit, and got red-hot in the later Seventies. ELO wasn't art rock, a la Yes, King Crimson, or Emerson, Lake & Palmer; group was far more pop-oriented. Lynne got George Harrison's career going again, and, along with him, was part of the Traveling Wilburys. He is retiring from touring with the band, but certainly not giving up music.
